Hands down, this was THE best scrappy organization I’ve ever undertaken. I’m using my stamps 10x as often. I just finished a 4 page project life spread and used 11 different stamp sets. Yes ELEVEN.
If you’re on the fence, don’t hesitate. Totally worth it.
******************************
Please help me out here, I need a stamp inventory. Some system so I can search for a word, or topic and see what fits my needs. This is for project life/scrapbook/mini album type scraping. I have dozens of stamps, think Ali Edwards, Studio Calico, Kerri Bradford, etc. A few days ago I was looking for a stamp, “Favorite Memory.” I knew I had one, or several. Took me 10 minutes of searching through my well organized stamps and I never found it.
I’m considering stamping all my stamps and categorizing them in a binder. I know Laura W has a method of pulling apart stamp sets into categories. I can’t do that. Just can’t.
I have a vacation coming up and this is exactly the kind of busy work project I love. The effort isn’t the problem. My biggest issue is how to reference the stamp to the image in the binder?
Anyone done something like this? Was it helpful?

I wrote out my method in this thread, my post is the second one. I use Evernote and I love it! Works well for me because of the search function.

Tagging lasteve1 as I'm pretty sure she uses this type of system. I think she cross references hers with a number or label that is marked on the physical stamp set, and then noted next to each stamped image, so everything on stamp set no 1, would have a 1 next to it in your binder, even if those sentiments/images are spread across a dozen different categories. I also couldn't break my stamp sets apart to store them in categories but I have been wondering if something like this would help me or just be a pain in the butt to maintain. I don't have an especially large stamp collection, so I could easily pull out and review every stamp in under 10mins, but I still forget some of the phrases etc that are on my lesser used sets so I'll be interested to hear from others who use a similar system.

I use Evernote. I LOVE it. The free version storage allotment resets every month. I watched this video to get started.

Thank you thank you!! I just read through the thread. As nice as Ever Note sounds I think I need legal_lady’s approach. I’m visual and want to see what I have. And I often do not have my phone or laptop nearby.

Yes Chinagirl828 that’s exactly what I do! janamke I have a quick walk-through of my system on my Instagram story highlights, my Instagram is @lindalovescreating. I’m also happy to answer any questions about my system! Each stamp has a label that is somewhat of a code, typically a couple letters for brand (but some others, like all alpha stamps use ALPHA instead of brand), then a number so I can continue to add to the set. Also a symbol for the size, for example 6x8 stamps get an ! The stamps are stored with others with the same letter code in numerical order. So, for example if a code says “!AE03” I would know that’s my third 6x8 Ali Edward’s stamp in my stash and know right where to find it. I label the stamp sets themselves by typing the code and cutting it out in a small rectangle and adhering it to the back of the set with clear tape. My stories show my binder and the categories I use, but generally when I get a new stamp set I add a label and then stamp each individual stamp on the relevant categories. I will admit it is time consuming, but it’s a mindless TV watching activity and helps me use my stamps and find what I want so quickly! Let me know if you have any questions I didn’t answer and I will try to help!

I would not stamp all my stamps to create an index/inventory. That seems like an incredible amount of work! I would create something digitally where you could add images and keywords/tags that are searchable. Something on your phone and computer. There are organizing apps that would allow for this. Good luck with whatever you decide! 😀
ETA: I’ve used the app Sortly for this (ink pads).

There's a new app I'm going to try. It's called Color My Life and it's specifically for organizing craft supplies. I've used Evernote in the past but didn't keep up with it like I wanted to so I want to try Color My Life and see if it works for me. I can link some YouTube videos of stampers who have used it if you like.

I use Color My Life, too. It takes time to get them all in, but worth it. I've stopped myself from buying a few duplicates by having the app.

I took a look at a couple of the digital programs and I just don’t think they are for me. I bought paper today and had the copy center cut it down to 6x8 size to fit a binder I have. I’m excited to do this.

There are also some stamps on sets that I know I’ll never use and those don’t get added to any categories.

I bought 100 of the cases similar to the ones StampinUp uses, I made all the paper panels to put in the sleeves. I have stamped all the sleeves, and placed the stamps inside the cases, and numbered the cases 1 to 100. That part is now all done. Now I need to go thru and stamp on 8½X11 paper each and every stamp. I have a notebook and 22oz paper and 4 or 5 sets of dividers. I will stamp each image in as many categories as required for each one. I have Asian woman in costume, it will fit in People and Asian. I don't know how many topics I will end up with until I am done. Each stamped image will have a number by it so I can find the stamp. It will much simpler to look thru the book to find the stamp I need, than to go thru all 100 cases.

I use color my life and love it. I use the stamp inventory page with tags for everything. Then if I see card ideas I like with a set, I screenshot them and save them under the name of that set. That way I always have inspiration I like.

So I’m about 75% done with stamping all of my stamps onto 6x8 paper for inventory purposes. Some thoughts:
It takes MUCH longer to do this than I originally estimated it would. Hours of time.
My fingers are constantly stained black.
Those tiny stamp sets from Studio Calico may be the death of me.
Lawn Fawn stamp shammy is the best thing ever.
That said, I absolutely do not regret this project. I can very clearly see the kinds of stamps I no longer need to buy. I have tons of ideas for layouts and projects just from stamping, now I know what I have. It’s going to be awesome…when I finish.
Linda has been so great and encouraging through this!

You go girl! ha. I think whatever makes your life easier is worth the time. I felt this way about my color swatching of inks... some ppl didn't see the point, but I reach for that binder all the time.
I think I want to do this with stamps I use just for scrapbooking. I don't really need it for card sentiments, I can find what I want that way. But I think I would maybe use more if I was reminded about what I have... I feel like this could be a watch tv and stamp activity.
Would love to hear how you categorized them and how you handle things that apply to multiple categories?

I am not doing card sentiments either. This is strictly PL and scrapbooking. I started with Linda’s categories, quickly looked through my stamps and adjusted. I think I’ve had to add one category since starting this, so her list is pretty comprehensive. If a stamp fits in multiple categories, I stamp it in both.

I have all of mine stamped out, by categories into binders. Its the same categories I keep them in, in their tubs. I love this method, its been at least a year now. I just go to my binders and can see every image I have. I've found I use my stamps more often too.
Now it's easy, when I buy a new stamp I stamp it before I put it away. It took a few weeks to get it started since I had 100's of sets to stamp, but I enjoyed it!

I am totally going to do this. It will be a perfect evening project. I usually work on puzzles or something while watching tv with my husband as I get too antsy just sitting, this will be perfect. I need to figure out my categories first, going to check out the links you all suggested for ideas.
Thanks for starting this thread and updating, I am excited to get to work.
