Because it is a landline there is probably something screwed with the wiring. In a house the land line part that operates the phone is typically outside of a house, on the backside. You can actually call from that even if there are no phones connected inside the house as long as there is a landline service. I don't know how it works in apartments but there is no way the grandma is operating the phone.

It does remind me of that horrible Twilight Zone episode however when the phone is ringing from the grave because the phone line fell on top of the grave of the old ladies boyfriend or husband.

I feel for that family it must be awful. It might be a kindness of the phone company to shut it off, but of course they can't, just in case.

I remember reading similar things after 9/11.

That family members were getting calls after the plane crashes or after the building collapse.

On a quick search, here’s one article saying that there were 19 calls documented from Todd Beamer’s phone *after* the crash of Flight 93.

That would be so disturbing. I can't even imagine the feelings of the family members when those calls come through.

Anyone else get those ads and news stories that come in on the lower right of your screen? Annoying but you just hit the arrow or x button and they go away. Well I have this exact story on my screen:"Grandson gets calls from missing couple's phone," along with a photo of the three of them. I've done everything to try to get it to go away, so has my husband, but it won't. It's been there since Saturday I think. I've tried shutting down my laptop, switching browsers, clicking on the story... still there. If I believed in ghosts I'd be freaking out.
