We'll be scanning the Black Friday ads for a new TV & would love some brand recommendations or brands to avoid!
Thanks,
Mary K

We've been happy with our Vizio so far. We've only had it for a couple of months though. Our old one was a Samsung and it still works fine (dh wanted something bigger so we let the kids have the old one for gaming).
I posted a while back on the old board and brands to avoid included Sanyo and Phillips. Ones that were reported as good were Sony, Vizio, Sharp, Samsung, and LG.

We have the 70" Vizio smart TV that we had hung on a very large wall & we LOVE it! It is super clear & when we watch movies we have it hooked up to surround sound & it's like being in a theater. Got a great deal on it at Tiger Direct.

We have a Sony Bravia LCD. We've had it for 7 years next month and it still has a great picture.

Got a 42" Vizio 2 years ago and really love it. The sound is amazing and so is the picture quality. Got it at Sam's Club.

We have a 50" Panasonic plasma that will celebrate its 6th birthday next month. Never had a problem with it, and the picture is amazeballs. In the family room, we have a smaller (42"?) Vizio LCD, which also has an awesome picture. The only problem we've had with it is that every once in a while when we try to turn it on, nothing happens, except the illuminated logo on the front flashes from orange to white for a while. Not sure why. Eventually, it just turns on by itself. Maybe it haunted... But it wouldn't keep me from getting another Vizio at all.

Sony Bravia smart TV. We really enjoy the smart tv features and the interface is very easy to use. I also love that there is volume, channel, input, and power buttons on the side of the tv so if the tv remote is temporarily misplaced we can still use it.

We have a 55" Samsung and are very happy with the great picture quality. We made a huge mistake when we bought it from Costco, however. We didn't realize that it had only one HDMI connection and no sound out port. We had to hire a professional to hook up our sound bar, DVD player etc. because of the lack of TV connections. And no way to hook up Netflix etc. to the TV. So that is my one caution. Wish we would have purchased a Smart TV. It would have been worth the extra money in the long run.

My Insignia TV SUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Do not buy one! Only a couple years old. Impossible to channel surf, bc the channels change sooooooo sloooowwww.... And, I'm not a channel surfer, so if I am complaining about it, it must be complete and utter hell for the pro surfers..... Also, the stand broke with barely any usage. We also had Insignia monitors at work. They sucked too. Bottom line, don't buy Insignia products.

We have a six year-old Vizio, still going strong, never a problem. I would definitely recommend the brand .

I just bought one a few months ago, and chose Samsung based on Consumer Reports and also knowing several people who have been happy with their Samsungs. Having said that, I also have a Vizio that is 6 years old and works fine, and my dd bought a Vizio earlier this year and likes it just fine.
The number of HDMI ports is important, even if you don't think it is. I knowingly bought a TV with only 2, because I couldn't imagine why I would need more. Didn't think about that my HD cable hooks into one, leaving just one open for the DVD player or gaming system, so we have to switch those out (not hard, but still.)

Our tv doesn't have enough inputs to plug all of our stuff in so I bought a switch box. We only use it to switch between the blu-ray player and the antenna signal. It's a lot easier than swapping out wires all the time. We also have a dvd/hdd recorder, the computer, and the roku plugged into it as well as a speaker that is hooked up to the 'audio out' jacks.

Bottom line, don't buy Insignia products. ditto to the TVs - ours sucked too and was only about 2 years old when half the screen died - nothing like watching TV or a movie and only being able to see the left half of the picture because the right half isn't displaying. A Google search showed that this was a common Insignia issue. I've been happy with my Insignia monitor though - it's probably 4 or 5 years old and no problems. I think we have a Visio now - it's fine, no problems. I'm not much of a TV person though so provided it turns on and shows the image, I'm good.

8 thumbs up (from all 4 of us) on our LG LED LCD tv. Very clear picture that isnt overly sharp. I dont like one that are too sharp because then you see the actors imperfections.

We're looking at buying a new TV too. Seems like a few of the sites I read recommended a Vizio E-series. We have a 6-year old Sony Bravia and love it. It's a little clunky because of it's age but the picture is fabulous and it's not bad furniture mounted.

Add me to the Panosonic list. I have a plasma that has an awesome picture. I have lived in my current house for 8.5 years and it moved with us so I think it is about 10 years old. We bought it just before Thanksgiving so it is either 10 or 11 years old. It has been an awesome TV and I will definitely look at Panasonic again when it is time to replace this one. No plans for that anytime soon unless it dies.

We have had Sharp Aquos TV's for many years and they have been excellent. We have never had any problems but the few times my DH had questions (reprogramming etc.) their CS was wonderful! Immediately got through to an English speaking technician who was very helpful.
