I'm grateful for his service in the Navy and his public service. And I'm sorry for his friends and family. But, I won't miss him.

good god! why does every post here have to say something nasty about the person who has died. so tiresome. i wish the political posts would have their own board, because people are just nasty.
have you every heard of the saying, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

Fuck that! Evil people should be called evil, even in death. Personally, I hope he’s rotting in hell.

This is so weird. Did people make this argument when Hitler died? I am so sick of the crybabies whining about politics. It’s like code for “I don’t want to have an adult conversation.” If you don’t like them, don’t read them. If you need someone to tell you a thread about Donald Rumsfeld might be political, I can’t help you. No one can help you.

Normally I would agree with you. Not for Rumsfeld. He is one of the main people responsible for Iraq, Afghanistan, and torture. Sure, he wasn’t the only one, but he had a big seat at the table.

Actually, you posted before anything nasty had been posted. Your post was the first nasty thing on this thread. I said I won’t miss him but I don’t think that qualifies as nasty. Also, he was a very public, very political and very controversial person. It’s kind of a given that people will have strong feelings about him, negative or positive. I don’t think he should be immune to not nice comments, even in death. If you don’t like political posts, there’s a very simple solution, don’t read them.

I'm sorry for those who cared about him.
I will not grieve for his loss.

I think it is worse to glorify someone in death. YMMV

The author of this article calls Rumsfeld the worst Secretary of defense ever. And he makes the point that his recent death doesn't spare him this distinction. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/06/how-donald-rumsfeld-deserves-be-remembered/619334/Wherever the United States government contemplated a wrong turn, Rumsfeld was there first with his hard smile—squinting, mocking the cautious, shoving his country deeper into a hole. His fatal judgment was equaled only by his absolute self-assurance. He lacked the courage to doubt himself. He lacked the wisdom to change his mind.
By the time Rumsfeld was fired, in November 2006, the U.S., instead of securing peace in one country, was losing wars in two, largely because of actions and decisions taken by Rumsfeld himself.
Rumsfeld had intelligence, wit, dash, and endless faith in himself. Unlike McNamara, he never expressed a quiver of regret. He must have died in the secure knowledge that he had been right all along.

endless faith in himself. Dunning-Kruger personified.
