We are planning a trip to Italy next summer and considering a visit to Lake Como. if you’ve been, I would love to know where you stayed and what you did? We will have 3 teenagers with us so I am thinking of someplace with a pool or beach area for the kids but cool places to explore for the adults.

We did a day trip there while were on a long weekend in Milan. It's stunningly beautiful...we did a boat trip to see all the gorgeous properties from the water and stopped at a village (the name of which I've forgotten) for some pootling about and lunch. So I'm afraid I can't tell you about hotels etc, not very helpful, but it is so very beautiful

Lovely quaint village on the south side of the lake with some good restaurants and shops.

Lake Como is beautiful but you will need to consider where to stay especially with three teenagers. There are some truly beautiful villages around the lake but maybe a little quiet in every sense for youngsters.
I only know the city of Como. It has it all I think and within easy distance of a trip to Milan for a day by train. Frequent boat trips around the lake, lovely shops, museums and a beautiful cathedral. Plenty of authentic Italian restaurants. There's also a cable car that goes up to a hillside town that overlooks Como but I can't remember the name of the town. There are many beautiful walks outside of the city too. There are public boats and hydrofoils that take you to various towns/villages around the lake and to beaches or you can hire a private boat with a driver and make up your own itinerary. It truly is a beautiful place.

Prepare for it to be very hot and very busy! We are trying to stay out of the heat as much as possible but I know we won't be able to avoid it at least some of the time. We are traveling with some friends that have never been to Italy so they will definitely want to see Venice and several things in Rome. We are planning to go mid/late June so I was trying to think of a place that might be a bit cooler than Venice/Rome. DH has a friend in Milan he will want to visit with too and that would be easy to do from the Lake Como area.

It's quite a way from Rome to Lake Como to drive and to Venice too.

If you are planning to travel around have a look at Verona, they have a programme of Operas over the summer months. A chance to hear and see a fabulous production in a Roman amphitheatre. Be warned though, it's open air and at the hint of a raindrop the musicians will stop and leave, not to return until the danger passes. But honestly we saw a wonderful production of Carmen there (after the musicians returned!).

Train is the best way to travel between the lake area and Milan. It’s only about 50 miles I think, less than an hour on the train but an hour and a half to drive - plus the pressure!

Remember air conditioning is not the norm so if it’s important to you, make sure your hotel specifies air conditioned. Some just say air cooled which can be a fan and an open window! If you are waiting in line for attractions (Venice/Rome) there can be very little shade. I take a pretty umbrella as a sunshade. Many places close for a couple of hours over lunchtime at the hottest point of the day and may not reopen till say 3 pm. They stay open late in the evening to compensate. The main tourist areas stay open. Bergamo, on the way to Milan, is worth a visit. All of Italy is worth a visit! It’s a wonderful country.

Yes, we loved it! We stayed in the beautiful little town of Varenna at the Hotel Du Lac. We loved taking the ferries and visiting different places along the lake. Villa Carlota has a beautiful botanical garden. Bellagio was crowded with people and had lots of souvenir shops. We did a walk up the mountain and had beautiful views down to the lake.

LOL at the pressure! For real! This will be our 4th trip to Italy and DH has no interest in driving and neither do I!

Thank you! This will be our first visit to Italy during the summer and we are going as soon as school gets out and hoping it isn't too hot. I will check Bergamo. Thank you! I agree about Italy being wonderful! There is just something very special about it and its people.

We did a day trip there while were on a long weekend in Milan. Oh, as you do!! I can't tell you how envious I am that you can just pop over to Italy for a long weekend! I couldn't even pop over to the other side of my country for a long weekend due to the distance, let alone the exorbitant cost!

I know...and I do love and appreciate that we can (or rather, could and hopefully will again) go to Europe easily We LOVE 3/4 day visits and have got one to Seville, Spain coming up next March which has been postponed twice due to Covid so far! Fingers crossed we get there this time! If I remember rightly it takes about 4+ hours to fly Sydney - Perth?

So, perhaps I shouldn't tell you about the day we drove to Como for lunch? One of our sons was visiting from Australia, and suggested a road trip 'just to visit some other countries', so we set off early from Munich, drove through a corner of Austria into Switzerland then crossed into Italy right near Como. We wandered a bit, ate pizza right on the lake front, wandered a bit more, then got back in the car. Not content to leave it at four countries, DH diverted us into Lichtenstein on the way home (bathroom break and coffee at McDonalds), then back to Germany. OTT crazy, but fun for DS to tell about when he went back home. That is my only experience of Lake Como, so not a lot of help to the OP. I can't even remember the name of the pizzeria, though there was an interesting archaeological excavation under the car park where we parked.

We were in Oberammergau last week and DH was all set to drive to Lichtenstein for dinner. All just for DD to say that she knocked out 2 more countries! DD elected Neuschwanstein (the Sleeping Beauty castle) and Hoenschwangau (right on the other side of the little town) instead. All of the online tickets for Neuschwanstein were booked a month out, but we got the last 2 same day tickets. The tour was all in German, but she got to see the castle. We did drive into Austria one day, but it was just to the Plansee and only about an hour. And drove through Luxembourg on the way home!
