While moving around our kitchen/dining room table that i'm not fond of I got to thinking (since dh isn't a fan of replacing things)....do I replace things more often than most people? So just curious about how often/how many times you've replaced things. We've been married/in our current house for 32ish years. Dining set - we're on our 2nd one (changed for bigger set as family grew) Living Room (couches) - we're on our 4th set Family Room (couches) - we're just bought our 3rd set Bedroom furniture - dh bought a couple years before he met me. I'm feeling like maybe we've gone through an abnormal amount of couches

Good grief it's like pulling hen's teeth to get DH to realize we need to replace something. We are probably on out 3rd couch after 35 years. This last one was free due to a friend moving. 2 big comfy chairs came with it. We had a leather couch that had definitely seen better days and was at least 14 yrs. old and so uncomfortable. He couldn't understand why we were getting rid of it. Dining table, not used, was his mother's. Still have it. Has a broken pedestal foot. It's just a table taking up a lot of space.
I feel like we don't replace things enough.

20 years in our house - we're on our third couch. First dining room table - it's still in great shape and we love it, so I can't see getting rid of it.

Some things, maybe. We’re on our third couch/chairs in 25 years together - but also our third house. I feel like maybe we replace our house too often. 😂
We have a few pieces of furniture that I really dislike and would like to replace or get rid of, but it’s a lot of trouble and I don’t want to spend money on that right now. So there they sit.

We desperately need a new couch, but it has been difficult getting DH to agree - and to be willing to spend the money. Honestly, we’ve been married 25 years and have never bought a brand new couch! We always get them secondhand, one from our parents, and my sister gave us two really nice ones. Last summer we bought one off FB and while it LOOKS nice, the cushions are shot.
So to answer your question, no we do not replace things very often. We get a lot of use out of our furniture.

We have been married 22 years. We started off with a really bad sectional that DH had before we were married. We then bought a couch/loveseat set for our upstairs living area and used the sectional downstairs. Then we moved and bought a new set for upstairs and moved the older set downstairs. About 12 years ago we bought another new set for downstairs because the other one was so saggy and falling apart. None of the sets that we have bought were the most expensive, but they haven't held up very well IMO. But, I guess my mom and stepdad have replaced theirs just as often, if not more, than us and I think theirs were more expensive and they only have two people living their, not 6. Both of the sets we have now are about 12-13 years old and look ok but are not the most comfortable. We really need to replace them but don't want to spend the money right now.
I guess the short answer to your question is that we have bought three sets of living room furniture (for two rooms) over the course of 22 years.

I bought my first couch after 25 years of marriage. DH had a couch before we were married that he had purchased new. I both loved and hated what I bought. It was so huge (it didn't look that huge in the showroom) and the recliner part was almost impossible for me to lock shut. Luckily my daughter loved it, so when she moved to her first non-college apartment, it went with her. It was just a couple years old, and I bought the one I currently have. I also bought myself a new smaller recliner and DH bought a new recliner at the same time we bought this last couch. I replaced my bed frame a couple years ago. What we had been using was DH's from when he graduated college, and it had been a hand me down then. I found an antique sleigh bed for $100. I love it! We sleep in a double/full size bed, so the antique frame was perfect! I bought our kitchen table about 30 years ago. That's it! Dining room table and chairs, china hutch, etc. are family pieces handed down. Now appliances - I feel like I do a total replace every 10 years, not that I want to!

In 1997(post marriage) I started again with almost nothing. No furniture at all, only personal possessions(clothes, books, scrapbook stuff, a few household items, etc...)
In 2010 I departed a long term relationship amicably. The couch was his, and the kitchen table and bed I no longer wanted. We amicably divided up the household stuff.
Since 2010 I have been acquiring my current furnishings. Some of my acquisitions were replacement items for things I already had, but didn't love. Originally purchased, because that was what I could afford at the time (desk, sideboard type cabinets, bookshelves, etc...).
2021.... I now have furniture pieces that I love, love, love! It took me several years, acquiring one(or two) things at a time. I hope my current things last for the rest of my life, because I love all my stuff. There are a few more things I want, and will acquire them, when my finances permit.

Interesting question. Sometimes I feel like I replace my appliances more than other people!
In the past 30 years and ALL since I left XH who wouldn't replace a thing, except for one broken couch: Upgraded dining table (we only use one table - no "dining room/kitchen" table that is separate I have three rooms that require couches: One has never been replaced and is still fabulous, one has been replaced twice (3 sets*) and one has been replaced once (2 sets) Upgraded my bed as soon as he left. Got rid of all but one piece of furniture and I painted that one white.
FWIW, I have always had space for a loveseat in my bedroom. Ridiculous how many times I have had to replace that one. I am on at least no. 5. That is thanks to the dogs and the fact that I wanted a white one. I cannot imagine who keeps a white couch/loveseat clean without chair covers, which ruin the effect of the couch.
ETA: For those of you who remember a couple years ago when I had to take my XH in because he had a stroke. He sat on my favorite couch 12 hours a day and broke a spring and I couldn't face that couch any more and dragged it by myself out to the curb for Big Trash. It was a little ridiculous, but it felt finally like I was moving on. I searched high and low and found a couch I love. It didn't go in the right spot, but it is giant and fits my whole family comfortably. Eventually, I found a chair and ottoman to go in my nook where my favorite couch was. It feels like ME again!

We've been in this house for 22 years. We still have the same furniture!
Our bedroom set we purchased in 1996. Our dining room set I bought before we got married. I've had it since 1982! Your living room furniture was given to us by my in-laws. It was my husband's grandparents stuff from the 1940's.
So, no we don't change out furniture.

I will be replacing everything. When we just sold our house the offer was for everything in the house so we sold it with everything except our personal effect. It worked out perfect for us and for the new buyers, they are moving from the west coast to the east coast and we are moving to another province. I am excited to buy new furniture for a new beginning.

We are budgeting for new furniture in our townhouse, when we move in February.
Our most comfortable couch cost $250 at Slumberland. Our family room couch, loveseat, and recliner cost $3500 six years ago and is crap. It's all saggy and uncomfortable. I am so disgusted.
We should have replaced furniture more often. It's so darn expensive! We replaced our kitchen table six years ago. We had the other one since we bought our first house in 1981! It actually held up beautifully.
We have our original bedroom set from when we married in 1979. I am hoping our furniture budget will extend to replacing it. We are replacing the bed for a split king.

One thing I notice when watching YouTube videos, particularly cleaning/organizing videos, is that people seem to have all new everything. No mismatched furniture (whether that is slightly different style due to being bought at different times in life) or things that have been replaced at different times. All of the “things” in the home also look like they were bought at exactly the same time. Everything is perfectly up to date. I’ve always been curious how they manage that—not only from a budget standpoint but because I think there will always be things in my house that I love even if they aren’t new, so things will get rotated as time goes by. Also, we have some pieces of furniture that were gifts and I feel like we can’t get rid of them, even if they don’t fit the current style and we don’t have the best place for them.

Well, we finally got our first new couch when we bought our house 5 years ago. Before that we had a couch someone left in the hallway of our apartment building that was awful, scratchy and the cushions were shot. But it was free, and we hauled it from our apartment to the rental house. We were so broke that we couldn't afford anything else. When we bought our house I said the couch goes to the curb and I don't care if we have to finance it we're buying a new couch! So we did. The other furniture in the room is either from before we were married or Ikea scratch and dent. THe dining room table is an antique from DH's mother which replaced the antique from my mother (we still have the chairs). Our living room furniture either was from before we were married or came out of my parents house after mom died and I needed to sell the house.
our mattress is the only thing we've replaced more than once. I think we're on our 3rd. Before she died my mom was dithering about replacing hers, considering I suspect it was circa 1970 it was time.
I'd like to replace the chairs in the living room, but with 2 teenagers Its not going to happen soon. Also, after taking in some pieces from mom's house we have too much furniture in our house as it is, but I love the storage options it gives us.

Not at all.
Dining room table and chairs- Dh bought before we were married. Bedrooms- our original bed has been living in the guest room and was replaced by a bed Dd bought 3 years ago but wouldn’t fit in her NYC bedroom. My childhood bedroom furniture is scattered between her room and the guest room. We bought her furniture when she was 5. Family room. - furniture was bought when we moved in 20 years ago. I would love to replace the couch now Living room- this furniture was bought to stage our last home, 20 years ago. Hate the color. Odd shapes so the slip covers with a better color don’t fit well either,
So, we clearly don’t replace much of anything, I have a few items that date back to my grandparent’s home- a French desk and a tea table that opens up to be a larger table.

Yes, we move countries often and live in rented houses with different layouts. I can’t count how many sofas we’ve been through in 20 years. I like to change out furniture often, but it’s a mixture of antique, second hand, and new.

We tend to buy new furniture when we move to go with the new space, and we're on our 4th house in 25 years. So we're on our fourth couch, our second set of end tables, soon-to-be-fourth kitchen table, 2nd headboard and night table. A few things that we love, like a wood liquor cabinet and a few end tables, we have kept through a couple moves.

Lol I forgot about our bedroom set - it’s 20 years old, a hopelessly outdated mission style, and wasn’t great quality to begin with. We haven’t bothered to replace it because no one sees it but us. (We have gotten new mattresses in that time.)

When we got married, we made due with the combo of hand-me-downs, childhood furniture and random college pieces. Our philosophy was to buy things we loved and it's worked out pretty well. Most things were bought after we purchased our first house so around 20 years ago and we still love them - or I do and husband doesn't complain. The family room couches really do need to be replaced, but I'm lazy and hate furniture shopping. We've had to add pieces when the houses changed - our old kitchen table is now in the basement as a game table as it was too small for our current house. We also lived without living room furniture for 10 years - I just didn't see the point in filling it up with stuff I didn't really love, so it made do as a play room and then music room and I'm thinking about turning it into a downstairs guest room.

We will be married 38 years on Thursday. We married very young and neither of us brought any furniture into the marriage.
We have lived in 5 homes (2 rentals and 3 purchased) Dining/kitchen tables - 3 sets - first was a cheap set purchased at Target, second was my parents hand me down set and third is an amazing Pecan wood set that includes a hutch that I purchased at a rummage sale and absolutely LOVE so will probably be the set we die with. couches/chair - we have gone through probably 7 or 8 couch/chair combinations. We typically rotate old to the family room and new in the living room like others have mentioned. bedroom set - started with mismatched dressers and just a bedframe when we married (actually the first was a waterbed LOL) but then have purchased two complete bedroom sets since I can't begin to count the number of TV's and entertainment centers

This is something that bothers me, and, I will admit, I judge, a little. I just don’t believe for a minute that life was meant to be so curated and devoid of a personal “story.” I do a lot of design work on my own home, and for others, and, for designers it is much easier to tell someone to just toss everything and start from scratch in order to have that perfect, Instagram-worthy room. But, IMHO, it’s a little lazy and boring. Sometimes it is time for an outdated furniture piece to go…that’s just the facts, but, I always like to work some personal items, artwork, occasional Tables, collections, etc. into a space. Trust me, those with a well trained eye prefer a collected look that truly represents a life well lived. Nate Burkus is a designer that does this very well.

Seems like we replace living room couches/chairs every 5-7 years. Especially when the kids were young - they were the reason we couldn't have nice things. Now a retired DH is the reason!

I don't know what is average?
In twenty years of marriage we have had 2 sets of family room furniture.. and just replaced what we had for the 3rd time on Saturday. We have never done like a WHOLE room remodel just parts.. I am working on changing the whole room this time. But will still have a few older things in there. The 2nd set of couches we had I HATED... don't know why I even picked them. Now we have a leather couch that reclines and a chair that is the same.. and a pretty accent chair. All dark grey and the accent chair is white/dark and light grey/blues. Best part was free.. it was my stepmom's and she moved and didn't want to take with her. It was in a room that was never used!
Always had the same kitchen table. It was a gift from DH parents when they moved to another house. It was a VERY expensive table so will probably always have it. It needs to be sanded down. It's one of those natural wood look so even though it looks rough right now, it still looks 'good'.
Bedroom furniture, only twice.. first time hand me down from an aunt but looked good and a full set. Then another full set from a friend who passed away.. we still have it although the mattress has been changed several times.

We just gave away a couch we've had for over 28 years. The person who came to get it said "it looks new".
We're really easy on our stuff and don't replace very much. Buy neutrals. Accessorize to "keep current".
I detest the thought of landfills, so we do our best to make things last.

We’ve been married 27 years. In apartment and first home we had a couch and kitchen table and chairs that we replaced when we moved to a bigger nicer house. It’s 18 years later and we still have the dining set and couch we replaced those with. At the same time we bought living room furniture and we still have those couches as well. Although we have the family room couch we did replace chairs in that room- but more so for style reasons that furniture being worn out. We have same bedroom set for about 25 years.

We finally got rid of our completely unused dining room set and turned the dining room into a music room. Much better use of space for us. And we turned the office into a little TV room during the last year when we suddenly had our college student back at home full time (plus high school student at home much more than usual) and needed recreation space away from each other. I’m a big fan of making your house fit your lifestyle … when we need a second eating area, it’s outside. Dining room is pointless for us, as a formal living room would be (we don’t have that, either). We’ve also made a point of buying things we love, but then we move houses and things don’t fit as well and our lives change and get upended … Looking around, I think the only pieces of furniture that have been in all three of our houses are my big china cabinet, which I love, and our old bedroom set that really needs to go. Someday. Oh and a couple of smaller pieces I took from my parents’ house when they passed.
