We've known some people who replace furniture a lot (every 3-4 years), usually due to change in taste/style. But most people tend to keep things longer. How long really depends on the quality of furniture being purchased and how hard a family is on the furniture.
We have always had a mix of family furniture/hand-me-downs and new furniture for the 44 years we've been married. As we added or replaced pieces (upholstered or hardwood) we tended to stick to higher end, investment pieces that wouldn't need replacing often. That method has served us well over the years as it has all held up and withstood the test of time/changing styles.
First sofa was a hand-me-down from my parents that lasted us 6 years. We replaced it with a good sofa that lasted 20 years. It was replaced with a Quatrine sofa in 2004. I added a new slipcover 4 years ago and have just placed an order for new cushion and back inserts. I expect to have that sofa for another 10 years at least. Same my chair and ottoman. Also bought it in 2004 and just ordered new slipcovers and cushion/back inserts. This will be the second set of slipcovers/inserts. I've found it more cost effective and ecologically friendly to replace the inserts rather than to buy all new furniture and discard the old. There was a sectional purchased 4 years ago when we redecorated, but that is now living with DD.
Bedroom furniture is a mahogany four poster with matching dresser/night stand chest. Those were purchased in the 80's. All that we replace are mattress sets and bedding. Decorator wanted to ditch them, but we said 'make them work'.
Dining table is the family table that I inherited 5 years ago. No chairs so we added some from Restoration Hardware. Prior to that we used one of those 80's teak tables/chairs. They went to DD.
Now when it comes to DH's chair, all bets are off! He had a gorgeous leather club chair/ottoman for 30 years. Once I had the cushion inserts replaced, he didn't like it as much. It now lives with my sister. Then he went with one of those gosh awful leather recliners - an electric one. When we redecorated the living room 4 years ago, he did order a nice leather chair with ottoman. That recliner now lives in my guest room because he refuses to part with it. Never mind that he also has a leather Zero Gravity chair in his office. And now he has fallen out of love with his new chair and wants something different. I swear that man is the Goldilocks of chairs!
