Y'all, I'm DROWNING in travel memorabilia/ephemera. Fortunately, 2020 and 2021 are very light travel years so I only have a small 6x8 envelope for the past 2 years but I still need to do something about all the past trips.
I know there's no easy answer and what may not work for one person will work for another, but I'd love to see/hear what you keep and how you store these things. My hope is that someday I'll use the ephemera in the travel albums I'd like to make but that has not happened yet.
Right now, all mine are in legal sized envelopes in document boxes. I've gone through and thrown away any thermal receipts that have faded over time but I really need to get rid of more.

I have one of those portable file boxes that I store that stuff in. Now I definitely don't save as much as I used to and I do toss whatever doesn't get scrapbooked. Still it all adds up doesn't it?!?!

That is a timely question. I have so much, too! I mean some from 30 years ago. I LOVE looking at it.
I think I'm going to take pictures of everything and then throw it away. I am considering putting everything in a garbage bag and writing Destroy XX Date on it - and maybe making the date 1 year in the future. That way, if I really want something, I'll still have it.
It's horrible!! But I can no longer keep all the [poo poo] I have!

I keep tickets, brochures, receipts, and the small guides you often get at heritage places. I almost never keep plane tickets as I rarely take photos of us on the plane and don't usually scrap this part of any trip we take.
I was guilty of sticking everything in a bag or box and just leaving it there untouched, but I've found my current system really works for getting ephemera into my albums. I loosely plan out my travel albums, print the photos and put them into the album where I think they will go. If I have memorabilia for that location I add it to the page protector as well. When I come to scrap the stories if the ephemera doesn't get used on the page it goes in the bin. This has really helped me keep my ephemera under control, and I often find that something I thought was important in the high of traveling is just not important enough to keep in my album.

I have a similar system that works well when I have a big trip to scrap. I usually scrap big trips in chronological order by day, so after printing photos I organize them by day with the memorabilia/ephemera for that day in page protectors along with the photos. I make big kits for these trips, so all the papers, embellies, etc are already in a big Iris or other 12x12 container. Last year I got a couple of big project totes from Joann, which can hold the supplies and the photos/memorabilia in one place, which helps to keep it corralled (see link below). After I scrap each day of the trip, I immediately toss the memorabilia that doesn’t make it into the album. For a couple of past trips to France and the UK, I took a SmashBook and supplies with me, and actually scrapped the memorabilia and a few photos while on the trip, and then just scrapped the best photos in an album when I returned. That worked well, and my kids love looking at all of the maps, brochures, receipts, etc from those trips. Iris Portable Scrapbook File Box

Small hijack - I am looking to purchase one of these boxes (can't find them online anymore) if anyone has one that is collecting dust in their space.

For most of it I take photos of it and scrap the photos. This works for kids' artwork, too.

I like your process Chinagirl828! Right now, I have my travel memorabilia sorted by trip in Iris containers with pieces of paper separating it chronologically/by location. Unfortunately, this means that I have to check this bin when I go to scrapbook my photos or things get left out. I LOVE including memorabilia in my scrapbooks, so I definitely keep a lot. I am still working on some photos from the last big trip I took, and many of them have gotten to be out of order, so what I need to do is sit down with my journaling (which I did at the time of the trip), my laptop (which has the photo files), the printed photos, and my box of ephemera to decide exactly what layouts are missing and then put everything I need for them in a page protector. If I was really ambitious, I would also make page kits at the same time, but I probably shouldn't over commit at this point

I only keep it if I know for sure I am going to scrapbook it or if it would be useful as reference in the future. I have a file, sorted by year in which I keep all memorabilia, not just travel. If it's a big trip, I will keep in an envelope too, similar to yours. I've been better about being choosy with what I keep. For my larger trips, I tend to make a digital photo book album, so sometimes I will keep a traveler's notebook or mini album with memorabilia as I go thru the trip or put one together after to accompany the photo book. I've also gone thru and just stuck things in divided page protectors, like the 12 4x4 squares is good, or even with a lot of 3x4 pockets. That way it's all there and when the pages get done it can accompany it. A lot of times I only use small parts of the memorabilia, so maybe you can go thru and punch circles from it or cut it down to photo mat sizes, etc. Like a brochure I may want the cover, but don't need the rest, then just recycle it. I think it just helps to be realistic about what you are actually going to scrapbook and want to use, then the rest can go & clear up space.

This works for kids' artwork, too. Is it wrong I find it really easy to toss my daughter's "art"? LOL I wish I could toss the travel memorabilia as easily. I think because my daughter is very "prolific" with her artwork it makes it easy to purge because I know she'll make more. During my insomnia last night, I thought about putting the memorabilia by date in some unused 12x12 albums I have. I can purge a bunch of it while I'm putting it into the albums and it would be easy to put the date/occasion on the outside of the album spine. But then after reading all your suggestions, I may get an expandable file folder and store it that way. Now to decide which will work best. Thanks for all your ideas!

I generally keep it in the iris box or similar that I collect the photos and any paper/embellishments that were purchased for that trip. Once I've scrapped, whatever didn't make the cut for the album is tossed. I find I'm more likely to use brochures etc...to help me journal than to actually put on the page. Tickets that are decorative often become embellishments but receipts and boring tickets not so much. Postcards I often include when I wasn't able to get a photo or my photo sucked.

I love flatlays of memorabilia. One large photo in your project and boom, done. You get a view of public transportation tickets, museum tickets, half-folded out city map, café bills and even local stamp if you sent postcards during your travel. The only travel memorabilia I cling to and patiently add is the Disneyland Paris programmes I pick up when I visit the park. The rest is generally good for the recycle bin after a little photo session.

When I come to scrap the stories if the ephemera doesn't get used on the page it goes in the bin. This is my general approach too. If there is some memorabilia that won't fit on the layout that I want to keep, I'll slide it into the last page of my album or if I have a lot of over-sized keepsakes, I'll put them in one of those BH envelopes.

I still have 2002-2008 to scrap. I have allowed myself photos and one 9 x 12 envelope for each year not scrapped. They contain travel, larger pictures, and my kids' school stuff I might use. They are all in an IRIS bin. I just finished a travel album for 2019 and if I didn't put it in the book, it got tossed.

I went through 3 boxes (banker's boxes) of travel stuffs and am down to 2 boxes now. I've put it all in year order so when I finally decide to scrapbook one of the many, many trips I still have to document I can quickly flip through the boxes and find what I'm looking for.

Also, I was cleaning out the kid's room (they are teenagers) and I found cartoons the 18 year old drew when he was little. He often made a comic with a unicorn and Mr. Cheese (a piece of cheese with eyes and legs). I was a bit verklempt. They aren't little very long.

This spring I spent a few days going through the closet where all the travel memoribilia came to rest. The first few trips, I collected EVERYTHING: napkins, and ticket stubs; captain's notes from the cruise, all the venue brochures; purchased books on certain countries or towns. The books and brochures were a great hit when I returned home so family and friends could look through them and ask questions about the trip. But now they were just collecting dust.
I kept photos that meant something to me (early trips I tried photographing from tour buses; taking blurry people-less pic's of iconic sites: not good photos, and I printed them all), postcards, and a few scrapable items, closed my eyes, and chucked the rest. It all fits in two shoe boxes: one of photos I still hope to scrap, along with travel pp and other scrappy supplies; and one for all the rest, sorted by date.

No, not wrong, but it makes this art teacher's heart hurt a little. I do keep a lot of her art, she makes a lot of "modern" art (mainly just paint splatters and lines and hearts and rainbows) so those are easy to toss because there are SO MANY! I don't want you to think I toss it all. It all fits in two shoe boxes: one of photos I still hope to scrap, along with travel pp and other scrappy supplies; and one for all the rest, sorted by date. This was my goal but it ended up being 2 banker's boxes. Our recycling bin is full this week because of all the stuff I've gotten rid of.

i am in the same boat. great reminder about the thermal receipts. might as well chuck those out.
the thing is, i don't know why i keep those things. i don't have any intention of making an album for them all. i think i just like leafing through them.

Here's my finished product! I went from more than 4 boxes (2 bags of memorabilia aren't shown in the photo) to 2 boxes. I'm so happy to be done with this and I've gained so much space back! (I give up! I've been trying to use the insert image link and it's not working so here's a direct link to the picture.) www.flickr.com/gp/86667349@N00/1940C4

I love using travel memorabilia in my scrapbooks, and travel scrapbooks are my favorite kind to make. What I use to organize memorabilia is an accordion file, and I especially love the discontinued Creative Memories File Mates that are black and I think are sized 11" x 13". Before I leave home I label the tops of the tabs by the dates of the trip and I fill the slots with information needed for the dates-like accommodation info and rental car info would go in the first slot, and so on. As those slots are emptied I feel those dated slots with the memorabilia I've collected for each day on the trip-each day's memorabilia goes into that day's slot in the accordion file.
When I get home I label the outside of the file (there's a plastic opening for that) with the name of the trip and the date. Then when I'm ready to scrap that trip all of my memorabilia is organized by the days of the trip and I have my photos organized as well by the days I took them-my camera labels the files by dates. I'm all organized and set to go. It makes it so much easier and less to think about and stress over-my creativity can flow. In my scrapbook closet I have my file mates all lined up ready to be scrapped.

I buy my CM Travel Mates on Ebay since they are currently discontinued. Be sure to ask for the size before you buy one. The kind I use are black and they are 13" long and 11" tall. They used to be sold with archival white folders that fit into the slots but I don't use them when I travel (or at all really) since they add so much weight.

I got an email the other day from Totally Tiffany and I like these binders for storing memorabilia. I'm thinking about getting a couple of these for storing the things I want to keep but that may not go in my scrapbook when I eventually scrap my past trips. I think it would be better to go through a binder vs. a file folder in a box. Totally Tiffany Project Planner Memento Keeper
