Trouble is that Abbott will surely be willing to spend taxpayer money to send sheriffs out to arrest them.

Many of them flew to Washington DC to encourage Congress to pass voting rights bills. I’m not sure if Texas sheriffs can arrest them in DC?

You can't vote overnight, but the Texas legislature can hold hearings well into the night/early morning, as well as their discussions overnight.
ETA: people signed in at 6am and were still testifying after 1am. And some didn't get to speak at all.

I hate that it’s come to this and that our elected leaders cannot work together and compromise. But this is the precedent that Mitch McConnell has set. It’s time that Democrats stop playing nice and take a page from Senator Turtle’s book.

Gov Abbot has threatened to cut funding for them - their salary and the salary of the assistants and workers. I thought that was so totally wrong. Yet he is willing to call a special session just for the changes in voting rules. Special sessions are supposed to be only for new things that come up that need state legislation on an emergency basis. This is not a new item, nor it is an emergency.
This is going to be interesting to see how it ends.

Abbott’s threat will really only affect the staffers on both sides of the aisle - basically he’s willing to punish GOP staffers to try to compel behavior from Democrats. Nice guy, huh?

Cruz is not that stupid that he doesn’t know there is a difference between the two.
But what he and others who make ridiculous comparisons like this one are hoping for those who lack critical thinking skills will become outraged by the double standard the Democrats are using. And therefore support whatever dumb idea the Republicans are offering. You know to “own the libs”. IMO

It probably won’t work ultimately and under normal circumstances I’m not supportive of this kind of thing. In this case, I’m all for it. People do not understand how much the GOP has rigged the system in TX. Yes, there are a lot of conservatives but the legislation that is being put forth is not supported by the majority of Texans. These laws are red meat for far right donors and an attempt to lock in power that is unearned. Dems are trying to preserve and protect the rights of everyone, including conservatives, while the GOP continue to strip rights, disenfranchise and further game an already weighted system.

Extreme gerrymandering has ensured that Republicans are very over-represented in our state house and senate relative to the percentage of the vote they get, just like Republicans on our US house and senate. They’re willing to “win” by cheating that way, but OMG if Democrats do the one thing in their power to stop a series of bad bills from becoming law.

I would like to donate to the Texas Democrats for standing up against voter suppression. Anyone know if this is a legit organization? Or do any of the Texas peas have a different recommendation?

Wouldn't it be nice is TX were allowed to work on the valid and urgent needs of their citizens? Like maybe their energy infrastructure? While they still aren't making bank, it is slightly more than that. $7200 its their base pay, and then they get $221/day per diem for the regular session and any special sessions. It adds up to around $40K a year.

More than my BFF made in a very small town, and she was teaching 4 different sciences with a portion of every class not able to speak or read English. [brag]And I’ll just throw in here that she took the school from from having a big portion of the class failing the STAAR Biology test to only 1 student![/brag] Teachers are so underpaid and under appreciated.

Thank you! I love Beto, I’m so disappointed that Texas and the rest of the country got stuck with Ted Cruz instead. Still holding out hope that President Biden might have a spot for him.
Even if the Texas Democrats are not earning a lot of money, they left families and other jobs to go to DC on short notice. I’m really hoping their courage and determination will be the lever to get the Senate moving forward on voting rights.

" Even with all this chaos in the Lone Star State, Texas’ rapid population growth in major urban and suburban areas across the state points to a trend to more progressive and inclusive politicsAll eyes were on Texas this past week as conservative activists from around the nation gathered in Dallas for the Conservative Political Action Conference. Almost every Republican thinking about running for their party’s 2024 presidential nomination was in attendance and spoke. They shared a vision for America that fed a crowd who still believes that the 2020 election was stolen and the Jan. 6 insurrection was a made-up event created by the media. At the very same time as this political gathering of ridiculous opinions and lies was happening in Dallas, the new special session of the Texas Legislature was taking place in Austin. On Saturday, the Texas House of Representatives had their committee hearing on House Bill 3 that would put in place new restrictions on voting. During the hearing, Republicans admitted that they had no proof of large acts of voting fraud but continued with their efforts to disenfranchise Texans, especially communities of color. One particular attack on voting rights is to outlaw 24-hour and drive-through voting that had been used by Harris County in 2020." news.yahoo.com/despite-republican-chaos-texas-progressive-144652578.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=tw&tsrc=twtrMerge - in cas you haven't seen.

Oh absolutely. Republicans here are terrified of the large, urban counties - Harris in particular. And Ken Paxton's voter fraud task force website even says that they're only investigating 44 counts of fraud, which are mostly incorrect addresses and not even all from the 2020 election - that's out of the millions who voted. I was listening to a local community organizer on NPR this morning who talked about the voting bill's provision to do away with drive-through voting because supposedly it is "less private" and people in the same car might influence each other's vote. But apparently it's fine for a car full of people to drive to the polls together and talk politics the whole way, then go into a building to do the same exact thing. The guy pointed out that the people most likely to use drive-through voting in 2020 were the poor and/or disabled, who could easily catch a ride with someone and not have to stand in line. Of course the Texas GOP doesn't want poor people voting! (Unless they're poor, white people in rural counties, and then that's totally OK.)

Last night on PBS NewsHour, Texas GOP Rep Taylor talked about the election bill. He complained that 10 million Texans went to work but the 51 Democrats were skipping out, and not doing their job. He tried to suggest that the Dems did have a seat at the table. He alleged that he had seen cases of voter fraud and even 1 case was too many. He even suggested the Democrats were being hypocritical and playing partisan politics. Talk about accusing others of what you are guilty. Then he used a false comparison and talked about Delaware’s laws, suggesting President Biden should do something about those before he tries to fix Texas. So infuriating how the Republicans are spinning it. www.pbs.org/newshour/show/texas-dems-encouraging-federal-takeover-of-elections-gop-rep-taylor-says?utm_medium=event&utm_source=playlist__linkThese are the kind of things that Americans don't want. And what Texans expect is our legislature — legislators show up to work and do their job. Ten million taxpayers showed up to the office today. But unfortunately, 51 members of Texas House decided they didn't need to do theirs.
