Apparently I have a 2 year contract with them. If you want their service you are forced to sign a contract. I moved after a year, through no fault of mine. My landlord wanted the house back. OK I take dish stuff with me, thinking i can install it at my new house. Long story short I can't have dish here. OK… Early termination fee of $240.00. The only way around that is… keep the box, unplugged, with no service for the rest of my contract and they'll only charge me $110.00. WTF? Now i have a box sitting in my garage, gathering dust which i have to return in 11 months. Does that make any sense?

Ugh. That is idiotic.
I hate how the cable/dish companies have a hold on us. We have one cable company and my bill for two TVs, one DVR and their "package" deal was $172!!! I just cancelled it and was planning on Dish, but I guess that's stupid . I am frustrated when I really just want to watch TV every now and then and the news.
But while I was moving my room around I lost my remote, so we're down to one TV. I can turn the TV on and off, but cannot change the channels without the remote. It'll turn up sooner or later, but I wish we were back to the old FREE way of life.

That is pretty stupid. We have Dish Network and I had to call them yesterday to find out about transferring service to our new house, it was not a pleasant experience! My DH was laughing because i was getting so frustrated. All I wanted was a direct answer to my questions.

I had the same problem several years ago with a mobile phone contract. I bought a new phone and went with a new carrier but, for those last few months, it was cheaper to pay the new phone bill plus keep paying for the old one and not use it, than it was to cancel - so stupid!
Since then I refuse to sign up for any service that requires a contract, although I'd consider a short term, like 6 months, if it was a really good deal. If they want me as a customer, they give me what I want, not the other way around. They need me more than I need them.
I'd had cable for a few years at that time too (different company) and didn't want to renew when the time was up. They said I needed to return the box - I said if they want it they can come and get it. I kept it for a couple of years but they never bothered to collect it, so I tossed it.

Seriously... I don't even know why I have tv! I am so entertained by this board, and by netflix, and amazon prime. Regular tv is plain bad. I like my hobo and show time series, but that's about it. Is there a way to get show time or hbo series by just paying for those? Or do I have to have all the other crappy 250 channels?
