On a plate at home or at a restaurant, both fish and the chips with a knife and fork. With your fingers or a wooden fork that they give you if you're on the go, especially at the seaside. They taste better from the paper at the seaside sprinkled with salt and vinegar Well nowhere uses old newspapers anymore and most take outs come on individual polystyrene trays wrapped in white paper. On the go fish and chips ....

Finger food. You break the fillet in half and pour in the malt vinegar, then savor the crunchy goodness.

I'm kinda both.. just depends on the order..
If too hot, fork Just right, hands. But if awkward fish cut, probably fork if the fish feels funny in the hand..
There is a lot that goes into my eating. HAHA

Fish and chips are always eaten with a utensil. Either knife and fork in a restaurant or at home. If out then a wooden fork. If I was only eating chips on the go as a take out then fingers are accepted.

To me, fish and chips at a fancy event or restaurant would be as out of place as a baloney sandwich. If they are going to serve finger food then I will eat it with my fingers. Now, sautéed or grilled fish with steamed vegetables would be a fork eaten meal.

No one ever turns down an invite for a fish fry at our house because my husband excels at them. I think a lot of it depends on the size of the fillet. If it's something like walleye that is bigger, you use a fork. If it is a smaller fillet like a bluegill it can totally be a finger food. But if we saw someone eating walleye with their fingers we would think nothing of it.

Personally, I eat mine with a fork but I also like to dip mine in tartar sauce vs. vinegar.

I'm from Washington and yes, I've only ever eaten and seen people eat fish and chips with their hands. Even in CA when we lived there and in UT too.

UK - takeaway fish and chips is eaten with the little wooden fork you’re given although the chips can be eaten with fingers certainly 😊

From the UK. For me fish and chips is a takeaway food that you eat from the paper with your fingers.

I eat battered fish with my hands because I dip it in tartar sauce. Not a fan of vinegar. If I tried using a fork, the batter would crumble off.
French fries are, well, French fries so they are finger food too.

In a restaurant, with knife and fork. Out of newspaper soaked in vinegar and frosted with salt on a bench by the sea, definitely with fingers.

I’ve never seen anyone pick up the piece of fish snd eat it. Chips yes. I’ve only had it in pubs. Ribs or fried chicken if bone in yes pick up but no bone knife and fork.

I’m from Michigan, very close to Lake Huron. The fish there was sooo good. I miss it very much. Perch and Pickerel, are my very favorites. I’m in DFW and can not find any fish here that compares. Ha - if the people in Michigan knew I ate catfish - they would lose their minds. I admit, it took a lot of getting use to. We would use forks for the fish. Fries or chips, fingers. Lemon squeezed and tartar sauce please. Heck, if you gave me some good, lake fresh fish - I’d eat it with my hands tied behind my back. 😊

Colorado now, natie Alabamian... I use my fingers, but break off pieces and eat them. I don't pick up the whole piece and bite from it.

Aussie here. If bought at a fish and chips shop you just unwrap the paper and dig in. Any where else, if it is served on a plate, use a knife and fork.

I guess it depends. If I get Cod from the broasted chicken place, I usually pick it up with my fingers and eat it, but those are more like fish tenders and I eat those at home. If Im eating cod filets, then I use a knife and fork and that is usually im a restaurant.
I dont know why the difference. Honestly, Id rather use my fingers

I have never eaten the fish part with my hands. I've never had it wrapped in paper, only on a plate. I'm not sure any fish that I've had would have held up to being picked up.

I’m struggling to imagine the kind of fish and chips y’all are talking about that wouldn’t hold up to being picked up. I feel like there must be different styles of fish and chips in different parts of the country. Do you eat things like chicken strips with forks too?

Knife and fork for me. I like to spread the tartar sauce over the forkful of fish rather than dip. This is me too ... I eat most things with a fork I'm in Canada and I don't know that I've ever seen anyone eating fried fish with their hands here in Calgary ...

I have Fish & Chips (takeaway) almost every week, so I never order it when I'm in a restaurant. Everyone in my family eats their takeaway F&C straight from the bag with their hands. I'm the only one who uses a plate and knife and fork, much the amusement of everyone else.
So if I eat it with a knife and fork in the privacy of my own home, then I would definitely use a knife and fork in a restaurant.

Personally, I eat mine with a fork but I also like to dip mine in tartar sauce vs. vinegar. Me too. I'm from New England. Fork and tartar sauce. But I'm open to trying new things. It makes sense to me that they could be finger food. And I'll try the vinegar next time too.

To me, when you eat fish with tartar sauce you would just dip the fish in the sauce like dipping a French fry in ketchup. Why does tartar sauce necessitate a fork? I’ve never seen anyone spread tartar sauce on a piece of fried fish, have only seen them dip.

DH likes fish and chips, but he only orders it at a sit down restaurant. He uses a fork for the fish because it is hot and greasy and messy and also because he likes to use a fork for most things.
