I dunk the fish in the tartar sauce just like I do the fries in the siracha mayo!

Personally, I eat mine with a fork but I also like to dip mine in tartar sauce vs. vinegar. Me too. I'm from New England. Fork and tartar sauce. But I'm open to trying new things. It makes sense to me that they could be finger food. And I'll try the vinegar next time too. I grew up in New England and Fish & Chips were a Friday night staple in my house. I tried the vinegar several times....as a child and as an adult....not a fan. I do get the fish could be finger food though.

Probably depends on where you are. Aussies eat fish and chips as takeaway out of paper with fingers. Only Cutlery if on a plate in a resturant

I have always used a fork, home or out. But I did learn something new today. I'll be people watching the next time I'm eating out

Here's a pic of the fish that I'm used to:
Yes, that looks like fish and chips that I would eat with my hands. The fillet is a little larger than many I have had, but not much so. I would break that in half, and then holding it vertically, pour the malt vinegar down through the fish part so that it works its way down towards the bottom. Then I would, holding it with my hands, eat it from open side down, adding more vinegar as necessary. Then I would eat the other half the same way. Everyone in my family eats fish and chips with our hands. And I’m someone (the only one in my family) who prefers to eat pizza with a fork and knife. (the horror)

Huh, I had no idea people ate fried fish with their fingers. I've always used a fork and knife. I also use the knife to spread the tartar sauce on top; I don't like vinegar at all. I usually eat the chips with a fork, too. I don't like getting my fingers greasy. Like elaine, I also eat pizza with a knife and fork.

Depends. If it’s breaded cod it will fall apart if you pick it up. If it’s crispy you can pick it up. I thought you were going to ask if we use vinegar, which I do. I like the breaded cod at Red Robin and haven't had it fall apart. Now I am hungry for it. I eat fish and chips much like I eat chicken fingers- with my hands.

Not just for you, a couple of people have mentioned tartar sauce on this thread. To me, when you eat fish with tartar sauce you would just dip the fish in the sauce like dipping a French fry in ketchup. Why does tartar sauce necessitate a fork? I’ve never seen anyone spread tartar sauce on a piece of fried fish, have only seen them dip. Tartar sauce here is thick, and the fish breaks apart. It's just a mess, so it's easier with a fork. If it was eaten with vinegar or lemon, I don't think there would be an issue.

Depends on how it’s served. On a plate? Fork and knife. From a chip truck? Fingers.

The only time I eat fish and chips with a fork is when my mother in law makes it and she serves it screaming hot directly from her deep fryer. And there’s always a side of mushy peas. Otherwise always with my hands.

I’d eat the chips with my fingers but never the fish. I like to have mushy peas with mine and you can’t eat them with your fingers!

I use my hands and the first dip I can get the tartar sauce on sans fork. After that I typically use a fork to dot a blob of sauce on the end of the fish, otherwise bits of the fish will get lost in the sauce
Also wondering how you knife and fork people eat chicken fingers.

With a fork since I've only ever had it in a sit down restaurant. If I had it from a food truck I assume I'd eat it with my fingers.

Upper Midwest (MN)—I was thinking fork, but now that I think about it, its more of a combo if it is a fish and chips basket. If it comes on a plate, fork (but fried fish on a plate in MN is usually walleye/pan fish which is usually pan fried and not deep fried.)
So, now I think of it:
Batter fried= fork to break up and fingers Pan fried: fork

Also wondering how you knife and fork people eat chicken fingers. Like the fish, it depends where I am ordering it from. In a sit-down restaurant, where it is served on a plate with other side dishes, I use a fork. But oddly enough, I eat fries with my fingers even in a restaurant. Chicken fingers from Raising Cane, or a pub/bar, I use my hands.

This might be the weirdest thread I’ve ever read on 2Peas.
And now I’m sort of wondering if there are people out there who eat ice cream cones with utensils. Or cotton candy.

Also wondering how you knife and fork people eat chicken fingers. FWIW, I can't remember the last time anyone ordered chicken fingers, but if I did, I would eat them with a knife & fork. For many years, they were DS's only choice off a kid's menu and he ate them with a fork when in a restaurant. Fast food chicken nuggets were finger food.

I thought this was going to be about the peas with fish and chips!
In the US, peas are served whole and on the side. In Ireland, they're pureed and served in a small cup. It took me awhile to get used to that.
