Thoughts?
I watched the qualifications last night. Well sort of, my dogs were being needy and I was trying to clean up the kitchen at the same time, so I missed a couple of routines I think.
I hope Simone can pull it together and clean up her landings/bobbles. Clearly she can and if she does it's all hers.
I really enjoyed Sunisa's bar routine.
I thought Jade Carey's beam routine score was a little low. She looked really good overall last night and it had me wishing she was on the team and was able to compete in the all around.
I'm really annoyed with the rule that each country can only send two gymnasts to the all around. I get that it's supposed to help the smaller countries but really if it's to find the best gymnast in the world, all the BEST should be competing. I know it's been this way for a while, I'm just irrationally annoyed by it today.

Yes I love to watch... I feel Simone is just being cautious.. just doing what she needs to go to qualify and saving herself for the real thing. At least that is what I told myself. lol.
I'm not a huge follower until the Olympics.. I have it on and watch but usually doing other things like cleaning, working a puzzle or playing on my Switch. I feel like I could plop myself down all day and feel like a slug if I do. I'm already a slug enough.. HA

She went ALL out and is so powerful it caused her to stumble/go out of bounds etc. Probably first night nerves and it's been quite a couple of years for these athletes.

I would love to find a good, simple list of what is on, when, and on what channel. I looked on the nbc website the other day but I wasn’t sure if the times they were listing were when the even was live, or when it was on tv. I am annoyed about the negative news regarding tram USA so far. I know they are the favorites but every single news outlet makes it sound like they are doomed and let us all down. Let’s give them a break and not out even more pressure on them. I read this article last night. I didn’t know about the concerns regarding difficulty scores and “trying to keep things more equal”. This is a different take on the situation www.vox.com/22575301/simone-biles-olympics-scoring-explained-gymnastics-yurchenko-double-pikeI’m also still irritated that Russia was banned yet they still have athletes competing…again. I thought Jade Carey was awesome. It is too bad she is not on the “team” and that only two from a country can go to All-Arounds. I hope everyone gets their jitters out of the way for the team finals.

I was annoyed with the two person rule too.
Jade far out-performed Chiles. I’d like to see her take the team spot.

I love watching the gymnastics events! I agree that Jade did great and wish she would have made the all around finals.

She normally doesn't make errors which is why she was picked. I am hoping it was just nerves, I am biased however as she is a former student of mine!

Yes! Love women's gymnastics. I pretty much follow them all yr round. We also have 2 MN girls there Suni and Grace. The 2 person qualifying for the all around was pretty much pushed hard way back in the day when the Russians won everything, and no one else got a chance. US pushed hard for this to happen. So they now have to live with it.

I did not understand the Jade Carey scoring on beam at all - I am absolutely no expert, so if someone more knowledgeable can expand I'd appreciate it. I think she should have been going for the all around instead of Sunisa. Simone was really all over the place last night. She has all the power, but definitely was not showing the control we're used to from her. I actually think the US team in general needs to work more on the execution. I know gymnastics has just become more and more "athletic" where the giant tumbling passes is all that anyone cares about, but I think the Russians will beat them if they can't figure out they need to at least point their toes.

She outperformed Suni on the events I watched, but I did miss her floor routine..

I think Jordan's lack of international experience got to her. Hopefully she is able to regroup and put prelims behind her and perform like she has most of this year. It'll be interesting to see how Tom decides to let her compete. Unlike prelims, finals is 3 gymnasts per event and all 3 scores count. I can see him maybe putting her in on floor and vault but we'll see. Just putting this out there also - I think Mykayla Skinner should have been on the team of 4 over Grace McCallum. I really like both ladies but MyKayla clearly hadn't peaked at Trials and had the potential to get better scores in Tokyo than Grace, which is exactly what happened in prelims the other night. Both MyKayla and Jade outscored Jordan and Grace. Jade should have been on the team as well but when she decided to qualify as an individual she felt obligated to take that spot and not try for a team spot, thus ensuring another USA woman would have the chance to go to the Olympics. If she didn't take the individual spot the US wouldn't have been allowed to fill it with another gymnast. Also, I really dislike the two-athletes-per-country rule for individual medals. The best should be allowed to compete period.

I’m also still irritated that Russia was banned yet they still have athletes competing…again. What was the point of the consequence? I yeah, not having the flag or anthem doesn't seem to be a big hit, but the athletes competing were not part of the scandal, so I don't really want to ban them. The track and field athletes, which were the origins of the ban, have a limit on the number who cam compete. Last I knew, only 10 Russians could compete in track and field events and they had strict testing protocols leading up to and during the games.

Their athletes weren't real "amateurs" because the state housed them, fed them, and trained them... and trained them...and trained them, from a very young age. So they were always the best, with occasionally other nationalities mixed in. Romania eventually, although they also had the same athletic machine in place.

On another note, I loved Germany's uniforms and their statement that women should wear whatever they are comfortable in. I know that some events need a uniform and that some things are banned due to their advantages (the swimsuits of the 2000s) but I agree with this. As long as there is no advantage in the clothing they should be allowed to wear what they want. In gymnastics, they are looking for leg separation, so whatever they wear must allow for that to be seen, but otherwise? Good for them IF that is what they all wanted to wear.

Not only did I think Jade Carey's score was way to low, I thought Simone Biles scores on the vault and beam were way too high. I really like her but part of being a good gymnast is learning how to control the power as well as being an acrobat.
I thought Jade Carey did better on the beam mostly because she stuck the landing. And actually on the vault as well. She did the same two vaults as Biles - and did them well - AND she stuck the landing which Simone did not, by a long shot.
I think the judges were biased because they like Simone, and scored everyone else lower than they should have because of that.

I don't know about the other countries that came about after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

I listen to a weekly gymnastics podcast. Right now they’re broadcasting every day from Tokyo. One of their enduring mantras is “Don’t believe everything (sometimes anything) NBC tells you!”
In the case of Jade Carey’s beam score, they believe NBC is driving the “Jade Carey’s beam score was mystifyingly low!” narrative. Her score was just a couple tenths lower than how she typically scores domestically (domestic scores are usually inflated). Her deductions, like most confounding beam deductions, probably have to do with dance elements. Each of those deductions is 3/10s and they can add (subtract) up. Jade got great scores for her specialties, vault and floor, and those are the finals she’s in. Actually, I think she’s in one more final than expected.
(The real sin is that Carey and Skinner, who share the same specialities, were forced into the “two per country” situation because of team selection. It could have been avoided.)
More useless knowledge: The two per country rule used to be the three per country rule. And team event used to have SEVEN members, then six, then five, now four. And more members got chances to compete, as the lowest score was dropped. Now, it’s “three up; three count,” which means the four members in the team event can’t even all compete on each apparatus. Reasons for continually limiting participation rules: TV time and judge fatigue.

I hate that gymnastics has turned into a super quick event… I remember watching an entire evening of gymnastics when I was a kid! The men barely got an hour of air time last night and expect the women to get the same amount of air time tonight during NBC prime time. :/

Cannot find the other thread but there is a possible update about the medals... Romania Makes Huge Jordan Chiles Announcement After Swiss Federal Tribunal MeetingMichael Gallagher 17 hrs ago 0 Though the Court of Arbitration for Sport may have taken an Olympic bronze medal away from USA gymnast Jordan Chiles, it appears the Romanian Gymnastics Federation is fighting to help her get it back. And the latest update after the RGF’s meeting with the Swiss Federal Tribunal might lead to exactly that. According to a post on the RGF’s Instagram page, the organization appears to be taking steps toward a resolution that’s mutually beneficial for all three gymnasts at the center of the medal controversy — Chiles, third-place finisher Ana Barbosu and fourth-place finisher Sabrina Voinea. “The Romanian Gymnastics Federation prioritizes the health and emotional stability of the three athletes Ana Maria Barbosu, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and Jordan Chiles,” the statement read. “This was and is the fundamental reason why the Romanian Gymnastics Federation pleaded permanently for awarding three bronze medals to the three athletes affected by the procedure and technical errors in the Olympic floor finals. “Following the proceedings taken at the Swiss Federal Court, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, through its lawyers, has sent an invitation for dialogue to all parties involved.” athlonsports.com/olympics/romania-makes-huge-jordan-chiles-announcement-swiss-federal-tribunal-meeting
