I've had two people tell me this week that they are interested in learning to make cards. One asked what I recommend as a basic list of supplies to get started. I got a deer in the headlights look while all the supplies I think we "need" ran through my mind then tried to not overwhelm her with a list. Lol.
I told her cardstock, adhesive, paper trimmer, stamps, and ink. She asked if I meant distress ink or something else, so it went into a discussion of it depends on what you want to do. It's hard to explain all the things to a newbie!
What would be on your must have list for a brand new cardmaker?

I would tell her to watch some Jennifer McGuire videos as she has great recommendations.
My list is kind of expensive but these things will do her in good stead: 1. A Misti 2. Spellbinders platinum 6 die cutting machine 3. Pick a brand of cardstock she likes for some bases and fun stuff, I have lawn Fawn and Taylored expressions 4. Nina 80 lb for stamping 5. Accent opaque 110 lb paper for bases 6. Tim holtz distress heavystock for distress ink and water techniques 7. A good pair of sharp fussy cutting scissors and long scissors I like the new ones from the stamp market 8. Bearly art glue 9. Double sided 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch tape 10. A pair of reverse tweezers 11. A Teflon bone folder 12. A score board 13. A set of stitched rectangle dies in a brand she likes such as the honeybee stack, waffle flower, lawn Fawn etc 14. Some stamps and dies that suit her fancy 15. A die pick love the new trinity stamps one for picking up jewels on one side and die pick on the other 16. Foam squares 17. A coloring medium I personally love my copics and think it’s worth investing in but she could start with the ohuhu brush and fine nib 18. Ink a basic black such as Gina k amalgam, a few colors she likes, east to work with pink fresh or alrenew as they come in colors that layer great. Get ink cubes to make sure she likes it 19. If she wants to emboss something white detail embossing powder, gold and clear, heat gun (Wagner), powder tool and versamark 20. White gel pen to cover mistakes and add details
That’s a lot but I use this stuff on practically every card

You might want to suggest to her to pick up a card kit from Spellbinders, those are packed: has a paperpad, cardstock,10 card base with envelopes, ephemera pack, stickers, gems, foam dots, tape adhesive, stamps and dies.
Everything is coordinated and there are YouTube videos of ideas, 10 cards 1 kit.
If she does that she only needs a paper trimmer, black stamp pad and a die cutting machine, the dies are usually small so a small Tim Holtz side kick might work( but she can hold off on this and just see if she enjoys the process first)
Good luck to your newbie. I'm getting ready to purge my craftroom I would be happy to send her a box of papers, sequins, gems and bunch of already diecut papers. Just send me a PM.
I only love Spellbinders,I'm not affiliated with them.

Card kits are a good idea for beginners. I’d also suggest she watch some videos, sheetload of cards is pretty basic, not a lot of supplies needed to make them.

scrappinheather that is a great list! It's always fun to see what other people suggest as must haves and things I don't even think of sometimes. azcrafty I didn't even know Spellbinders made a card kit. Those look pretty great added with some things from Heather's list would get her off to a good start. And that is so sweet of you to offer up supplies! We're planning on getting together soon so she can see if she likes making cards with my supplies, so we'll see if it's something she wants to continue with. Thank you so much for the offer for now linda's I didn't even think of that. Thanks! That would be a good starting point without needing a ton of papers.

I agree ladies my list is pricey. But I was just thinking about what I use on practically every card and I wish I had made the initial investment in quality in the beginning. I made lots of mistakes along the way wasted too much $$ and didn’t want others to make the same mistake.

My grand niece (aged 17 years) wants to “learn how to make cards”.
I plan to buy some card bases and have her over here for a day playing with my stuff before deciding what to get her for Christmas. Thinking if die cutting &/or embossing is her thing, I can give her my old Cuttlebug and lend her some dies/ embossing folders to get started. If she likes stamping I can lend her some stamps and give her some used ink pads to play with. Then for Christmas I can pick up some new tools/ supplies that fit her interests.

I really like the Stampin Up Paper Pumpkin kits. They include everything you need except scissors. And now they have kits that are basically the Paper Pumpkin kits so you don't have to subscribe. Not sure if you need to buy blocks for the stamps or if they are included in the kits. The kits are a good way to see how things are put together without investing in all the tools.
