Hello all, hoping to get some help from more experienced card makers. I showed my cards at a neighborhood event for the first time a few weeks ago and got an email today from someone asking me to make them a custom card! I'm so excited!
But now I'm feeling a bit stumped about how much input I should allow from the customer: do I show her a few ideas off of Pinterest and tell her I can make something similar? Or do I just take what she's said (a card with lots of dimension) and make my own design and hope that she likes it? Or something in the middle: think up my design and then give her a brief description for approval before I make it? I want to be sure she likes it but I also want to be sure that I don't make her do all the heavy lifting of being creative, if you know what I mean... Would really appreciate your thoughts!

Make it pink, make it pretty, and charge $20.

I would not show pictures from Pinterest. She could fall in love with a design where you need to purchase stamps or dies to make it for her or the paper, and you can't find it.
I showed a person some cards I made at a card class and she wanted me to make more of them, so I thought I can make them with stuff I already owned, nope just didn't have the right punch.....I ended up buying more supplies to make them for her. Thats when I decided that people can purchase what I have and thats it.
I would make a few cards that she can choose from and you can always give her color/sentiment/font options.
Are we talking about thank you notes?

I’d give a few color choices and that’s it. And/or you can ask which of your cards she liked. No to pinterest.

Did you agree on a fair price? To create dimension can take a little or a lot of time, and the cost can add up, depending on the way you choose to do it. Are you using a shaker, or foam tape? Doing fun folds? How much time and money are you putting into it? Did she say what she would pay?
Did some of your cards that she saw have dimension? Or does she want you to do something different?
Definitely steer clear of any Pinterest links.

I find a lot of people who don’t make stuff really don’t know what they like if they’re given too many choices. Obvs depends on the person - some are very picky! But many people just have a vague sense and will love anything you make for them that’s roughly what they asked for. Good luck. It can be tricky if people aren’t coming to an agreement on the same terms (I got burned the first time I made a set of custom cards and the customer expected to pay what she would for a set of printed notecards at Walgreens 😬) but hopefully you both can come out of this happy

I have a couple of people that I make custom cards for and the way we do it is they send me a list of the following:
Person's name event type (bday, anniversary, birth, etc.) things the person may be into or favorite colors date the card is needed
Then I come up with the design and deliver the card & envelope at least a week before the deadline. I'm very lucky as my main client LOVES everything so she is very easy to please. I find I can do my best work when there aren't too many parameters for me to follow.

I just recently was "hired" to make some custom cards for some ladies that know my husband. The one gal needed some baby cards that matched the gifts she was giving-so she just said I need one that is ocean themed and one that is African animal themed. She also sent me pics of the gifts she was giving so I could match colors and feel. I made up my own design using what I had on hand and available. The other gal just wanted some 'thinking of you', 'hang in there' type cards. She asked for one to have dragonflies on it. She asked for one to be fishing themed card. So, I just took those requests and did my own thing. Fishing was hard cuz I don't really have anything fishing related, but I got something put together. I guess I kinda figure, if they didn't like your work, they wouldn't ask you to make the cards. And if they don't like what you come up with, they just won't ask for another one and that's ok too. You gotta do your thing, otherwise, you won't be happy with what you made and that shows. Most of all, have fun and enjoy the process! That's what I tried to do!
