I just saw this article. My heart dropped. All those poor restaurant servers who were treated so badly over patrons who refused to wear masks - this probably won't go any better New York (CNN)New York City will require proof of vaccination to enter all restaurants, fitness centers and indoor entertainment venues, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday. -- i wonder if that means movie theaters and stuff? What about kids who aren't old enough for the vaccine??? "If you're unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in many things," de Blasio said. "If you want to participate in our society fully, you've got to get vaccinated." www.cnn.com/2021/08/03/business/new-york-city-vaccine-requirements/index.html

Good. I hope more major cities will get on board with this.

Good!
I'm hoping to see more and more of this. When peoples day to day comforts are threatened, maybe that'll force them to get vaccinated finally.

I will be the lone dissenter on this issue (guess Im not so alone after all lol) . I am pro vaccine, but I also acknowledge that this vaccine has not been fully approved, we do not fully know what it will or will not do. I do not believe in mandating such a vaccine AT THIS STAGE of it's existence. Once it has gone through the proper channels, we can look at mandating. Yes I also believe in science so I realize I am in the small majority who feel this way. I have had mine. Got it as soon as I was eligible. For the record I do not believe in mandating the flu vaccine either.
I do not believe in providing proof of vaccines to go about my daily life. I do agree with the current mandated proof for travel, admission into medical facility (like long term care type situations), attending any schools. I do not agree with proof of vaccines to dine out or go grocery shopping or go to Michaels. I struggle with my thoughts on large venues such as indoor concerts because I am not quite sure where I stand there. I can admit that. This is all new to me and I have no problems admitting when I have conflict in how I feel/believe and what I am reading from medical experts.
I am worried that California will follow with this type of thing. We tend to follow NY in the handling of the virus. I feel there is a lot of room for choice already. I can choose to vaccinate or not. I can choose to attend a concert or not. I can wear a mask in any venue I choose or I don't have to. Those who choose not to vaccinate or wear a mask have to live with their own choices and the consequences of those actions. I understand herd immunity very well, however this vaccine is not a mandated vaccine. If they aren't willing to mandate it, then they shouldn't be able to mandate proof of it other than medical, travel, school. If you really want it that badly, then mandate it. I have a feeling the reason they don't mandate it is because they wouldn't win the court fights at this stage and this is their end route around that issue. For a party that doesn't want anyone telling them what to do with their bodies, the reaction and support of this particular things is a bit surprising.

I really hope Ontario goes in this direction, but we’re not well set up for it and Ford (ugh) has said he will not create a “class system” based on vaccination status. Sigh.

I agree with ScrappinSpidey. IDK how the heck they are going to put this on the stores or restaurants to verify. As it is people have meltdowns over having to wear a mask. Who is going to do the checking? And what about fraud?
If they require restaurants and stores to verify vax cards it will kill the businesses. They can't possibly police this, or pay a staffer to.
I'm super pro vax but people are crazy and this is just not going to work.

In practice, I think it’s a wasted effort. Fake proof of vaccinations will proliferate.

You’re ot alone scrappinspidey I have similar concerns. Though my concerns are not so much for the patrons, they have a choice whether to go out to dinner or to the gym or whatnot….the employees do not have the same choice. And it’s not like they can just get a job elsewhere if it’s citywide.

Ugh, I used to work the front desk at a gym in college starting about 12 years ago. Back then the gym I worked for had introduced technology to tie your phone number with your thumb print as a way to check into the gym without needing your member card or ID. Most people were great and signed up or simply said no thanks and continued to bring their cards and ID. But those select few people who were total jerks to me for simply asking a question still haunt me. I could not imagine, especially at the rates this place paid, being required to check each persons vaccination card. Nor would I want to. I feel so bad for public employees who will be required to ask people for their vaccination status.
I want as many people vaccinated as possible but I also don’t want to have to prove to every store and public location that I’ve been vaccinated. And what about kids who aren’t eligible? Are they exempt or will they have to stay out?

I am an optimist by nature, but this is simply not going to work. As much as I LOVE the idea, the vaccine cards would not be difficult to forge if one wanted to. And like others have said, the poor staff who are going to have to try and enforce it…no, I don’t see it going well at all.
I work for a large healthcare system and today they told us that flu and COVID vaccines will be mandatory going forward. I was quite pleased about it - and not too surprised.

i'm not surprised that this is what it's coming to. the thing is, there are unvaccinated people who want to keep their status a secret or lie about it just so they could go about their business. while i respect their right to keep their status private, i also support a business's right to refuse service to anyone.
i was just lunching with a friend of mine who is not vaccinated. she occasionally works for Los Angeles City as a fill in worker at their libraries. during lunch, the City sent out an email asking it's workers if they are: 1) vaccinated 2) unvaccinated 3) decline to state. she says "what should I say?" i said, "what do you mean? why wouldn't you tell the truth? if you are determined to remain unvaccinated, why wouldn't you be honest about it?" if you don't want to say, don't say, but then don't be surprised if "don't want to state" equates with "unvaccinated" in some people's eyes.

Pretty impressed with them.

I wouldn't answer that question either. It isn't any of their business. My work also wanted people to report if they had been vaccinated but they wouldn't disclose why they wanted the information and what they did with the information. They did not require any other proof of vaccinations either. I declined to state. That doesn't mean anything other than I feel that my status is none of their business. I have had to prove vaccinations when working in other medical facilities, but they are very clear on why they are asking, what they do with the information etc. I feel like with this vaccine everyone has just decided that all the rules go out the window. Maybe those who automatically assume that someone who doesn't disclose is automatically anti vaccine need to change how they think. Just because someone doesn't answer the way you feel they should, doesn't necessarily mean they are anti whatever you are for.

In theory it is good, but I hate to see this responsibility put upon the restaurant and gym workers. People have died trying to enforce wearing a mask, now these workers have to ask everyone for proof of a vaccine. I don’t know what the right answer is, but I don’t think this is right. I would be ok with individual businesses having their own vaccine requirement, but having the government mandate it doesn’t sit right with me.

Public health crisis, war, natural disaster, extreme civil unrest, etc.—all can cause situations where the government has to implement more stringent restrictions on actions/activities than normal. This is a public health crisis, and it falls within the government’s power to restrict activities for those who are not vaccinated. The more people end up infected because they are not vaccinated, the more likely it is that this virus will mutate into a variant that is vaccine resistant and non responsive to treatment. I am all for any steps that will help prevent that.

It’s not a mandate. It’s controlling access to places of public accommodation based on a voluntary health choice. A lifestyle choice, if you will.
Everyone has a choice whether or not to get vaccinated (or they can apply for a legitimate exception if they can’t). Nothing mandated about it. If you don’t want the vaccine, then you’re making the choice not to go into these public places. Operative word is choice.
(States and localities already regulate and oversee other health requirements for restaurants and gyms, so this is not some outrageous thing. It’s only a big deal because the right decided to politicize the vaccine.)
Oh and BTW, mRNA treatments have been tested and in used in other applications for over a decade. They’re not some unknown quantity.
This is no more totalitarianism than it is to require that the person who serves your food washes their hands after using the restroom.

Operative word is choice. Not for the minimum wage employees it’s not. They don’t have a choice unless you count getting the shot or living on the street a choice. Now if they said unvaccinated employees would need to wear masks and be tested twice a week that’s be a choice and I’d be on board, but they didn’t say that.

It’s still a choice. You want to work and eat, you get the vaccine. There are also other places to work that are not requiring the vaccine. I think y’all are underestimating the rage you’re sparking in vaccinated America. We’re not likely to tolerate this foolishness - through which the unvaccinated are holding the rest of us endlessly hostage - for too much longer. I don’t want some unvaccinated person breathing on my food or in my space at a restaurant, and eventually, the market will solve this problem for us.

Would you still make that assumption after knowing there are people who choose not to disclose and actually have the vaccine and are pro vaccine?

I don’t want some unvaccinated person breathing on my food or in my space at a restaurant, and eventually, the market will solve this problem for us. I find this very interesting. I am vaccinated. I am not enraged. I do not have this feeling that you do. I know many like me so not all vaccinated people feel the same way about this situation. I do not feel held hostage by those choosing not to be vaccinated either. I do not have any kind of issues with being served by someone who may or may not be vaccinated. There really is no way to know at this point. Too many unvaccinated walk around without a mask, which was supposed to be a perk for vaccinated people only. Not many establishments post if all their employees are vaccinated or not. People who are vaccinated still choose to wear masks even with the vaccine so there really is NO way of knowing if the person who serves you at a restaurant is vaccinated. Do you currently ask the status of the person you are interacting with at each and every interaction? This is a sincere question as I am trying to understand something I currently do not feel myself.

Perhaps your job and your family’s mental health haven’t been as severely impacted by this ongoing shitshow as mine have. Rage doesn’t begin to describe it. I intend to start asking restaurants I visit if their workers are required to be vaccinated. If not, I will not eat there, period. And I will let them know why. As hugely contagious as this new variant is, the unvaccinated are exponentially more likely to be breathing Covid on me and mine than a vaccinated person is. And since I’m around kids who can’t be vaccinated every single day, I’m not willing to risk spreading Covid to them through an asymptomatic case because other people can’t be bothered to do the right thing. I don’t have any family or friends who haven’t been vaccinated, so it doesn’t come up socially. I know of two coworkers who haven’t been, and I keep my distance. The only coworkers I spend significant time with have been vaccinated. ETA: About 2/3 of Americans support vaccine mandates. A higher percentage, over 70%, support requiring plane passengers to show evidence of vaccination. Perhaps you don’t know anyone with strong feelings about this, but it seems a majority are over these idiots.

Why should we change how we think? The unvaccinated are unnecessarily prolonging this whole nightmare for all of us and they don’t care. If they have the right to do that to me, I have the right to think what I want about their non-answer answer. I have already proven that it isn't just non vaccinated people who choose that option. I think its interesting that anyone would choose to automatically make that assumption. Would you still make that assumption after knowing there are people who choose not to disclose and actually have the vaccine and are pro vaccine? Anyone who is helping the voluntarily unvaccinated hide among people who have done the right thing is not someone I want to spend time with. By protecting their choice to keep all this going, you are indirectly causing the rest of us harm.
