We are flying all night and I will NOT sleep without ambien. Is it dangerous or against the law to take one for a long flight? My husband can drive us home so I wont have to drive afterward. I'm just a little nervous to be in public under the influence of ambien.

I have no problem using Ambian when I fly on long flights. Of course, I have never had a problem at home with Ambian so I didn't worry about using it while flying. Will half a pill work for you? You might not worry as much if you use half a pill.

Just my opinion, but I would not be under the influence of anything that could impair my judgement while out in public. What if (God forbid) there was any type of emergency situation. Would you be able to react quickly?
What if you said or behaved in a way that you would not have sober?
I'd skip the Ambien and try for a nap once we landed.

I've never gotten up and wandered or done anything weird on Ambien. I just sleep.

I couldn't do it, and lavenderlayoutlady's examples are very good reasons why not. I do react weirdly with Ambien. I've been in a strange state where I knew I wasn't fully awake, but had no ability to stop myself and make myself go back upstairs to bed. I would be afraid I would wander up to the captain's cabin and get arrested. Or try to exit out an emergency door. I won't even take them at home without a couple of precautions. I have heard that there have been people that drive while under Ambien's influence. I'm terrified that I would do that. Before I take one, I take my car key off the ring and put it in a paper cup filled with water and stick it in the freezer. Sounds stupid, I know, but even if I remembered where I put it, I couldn't just take it and start driving. I would have to hopefully wait for it to thaw out. I didn't start doing that until my mom caught me downstairs making toast when I had taken an Ambien. She said I had the strangest look on my face and I was talking to someone that wasn't there. Since I know I do weird stuff, I wouldn't take it on the plane. But more for the reason of needing to be able to be totally awake in an emergency situation more than anything else.

I don't react weirdly to it. I wouldn't take it if I were on a plane by myself but if someone else were with me I would probably do so for a redeye.

If I take Lunesta or Benadryl I do it when I get on the plane so I don't have to worry about it when I go through security. I've only had to do it once though and it was really late flight but i wanted to be relaxed and sleep even after i got off my flight. I have a hard time sleeping anyway, and it's worse when I travel. So that seemed to work. I had family picking me up so I could just go to their place and crash after the flight. DH was with me but I don't know if I would do it if I was alone.

I was going to suggest something over the counter first. I think NyQuil has a new sleep aid now. Maybe try something like that?

I take something similar whenever I fly longhaul as otherwise I wouldn't get any sleep at all. I've never had any issues. If you've taken it before without problems I can't see any reason not to, particularly when you're traveling with your husband.

I wouldn't take it. What would happen should there be an emergency with the plane? Would you be able to function if you needed to? Maybe you could take a Nighttime Tylenol or something like that.

I have taken Ambien for trans-Atlantic flights. If there's an emergency over the ocean, I'm probably SOL anyway. The last time though, I used Benadryl instead. I didn't sleep as soundly, but it has less of a hang-over effect for me.

OK, I won't take it. Without ambien, I don't sleep at all. I'll try a tylenol PM. My husband and two daughters will be with me but I have been known to do strange things as well. I've gotten up and had silly conversations with my girls. They'll tell me to go back to bed and I do.
I'll just plan on sleeping all day when we get back! Thanks for the comments

Thanks for the comments If you have strange reactions, I would not take it on a plane. I was on a flight from Hawaii to LA and a woman took Ambien, started acting strange, and we almost had to turn around and go back. The only thing that saved us was we were 5 min from the 1/2 way point and it wasn't a medical emergency.

I cannot sleep in the hospital. I was concerned about being awake enough to nurse. The nurse told me that Ambien is one that you can wake to a state of alertness when needed.

Get some Sonata. It has a 4 hour half life and doesn't have those crazy side effects. I took ambien once and it did NOTHING for me. Sonata is a prescription sleep medication.
