Straight-up electioneering from the (tax-free income) pulpit.

Well son of a gun…. They have a point. If the idiots in this state vote yes on the recall, the next Governor could be elected with as little as 6% of the total vote. Sorry, no one running for a state or federal office should be able to win with 10% or less of the vote. Politico… link“ Federal lawsuit challenges California recall as unconstitutional”By JEREMY B. WHITE and DEBRA KAHN 08/16/2021 09:41 PM EDT OAKLAND — Two California voters are challenging the legality of the state’s recall system less than a month before the Sept. 14 election, echoing concerns from constitutional scholars as Gov. Gavin Newsom fights for his political life. A complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California argues that the state's recall provision violates the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by allowing sitting governors to be replaced by candidates who have received fewer votes. The plaintiffs, Rex Julian Beaber and A.W. Clark, want a court order either prohibiting the recall election or adding Newsom's name to the replacement candidate list. Elections officials have already sent millions of ballots ahead of a state deadline today.Gubernatorial recalls in California involve a two-part ballot. Voters are asked whether to recall the sitting governor, then who should replace the governor. If a majority of voters oust Newsom, whichever candidate receives the most votes on the second question would replace him. That allows a replacement candidate to be elected with a small plurality — and potentially with far fewer votes than the number of votes cast to keep the current governor. While polls show Newsom in a tight race to stay in office, the leading Republican contender to replace Newsom has consistently registered support from a quarter or less of the electorate.Constitutional law expert Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, raised that precise scenario in a New York Times op-ed last week arguing California’s recall process is unconstitutional. Chemerinsky and law and economics professor Aaron Edlin argued for altering the rules to allow governors stand as candidates on the second question and advocated for a legal challenge compelling the courts to intervene.“The court could declare the recall election procedure unconstitutional and leave it to California to devise a constitutional alternative,” Chemerinsky wrote. “Or it could simply add Mr. Newsom’s name on the ballot to the list of those running to replace him. That simple change would treat his supporters equally to others and ensure that if he gets more votes than any other candidate, he will stay in office.” Beaber, a Los Angeles attorney and clinical psychologist, would not say in an interview if he's a Democrat. "I would prefer not to say, simply because I think it's irrelevant," he said Monday. "To me it would be unfortunate if party politics was the driving force behind the consideration of this lawsuit. This lawsuit seeks on its face to declare a current California remedy as unconstitutional and it would apply regardless of whether it was a Democrat or a Republican already in office."

When I complete the ballot I will vote “no” to the first question and for the second question I will for the first time use the “write in” choice and put “my late cat Fred”. I really have no idea how things work over there, but I wouldn't risk writing in a candidate that does not exist on the ballot paper. Wouldn't that make your whole vote, including the "no" in the first part, null and void? And another thought - how is the first part of the ballot worded? When I first saw something about this debacle this morning, I wasn't sure what they meant by "Should Gavin Newsom be recalled." Maybe that's familiar wording to all of you, and it's just this ignorant Aussie who was confused. But there is always the possibility that someone who wants Gavin Newsom to retain his position votes YES because they think that recalled = retained. ETA: I just found something on the wording. Apparently it reads “Shall GAVIN NEWSOM be recalled (removed) from the office of Governor?" That is much clearer, having (removed) included.

It’s pretty common in the US to have an option to write in a name on the ballot in local and state elections. My late cat Fred might only get 1 vote, but they will still count it.

No, my “no” vote would be counted because they are two separate questions. And that is the important answer/question. As to my planned response to the second part, that’s my way of saying this whole recall thing is a joke.

There will be four "no"s from this household. The whole thing is infuriating.

I’ll be writing in Gavin’s name, unless someone can give me a good reason not to. (Admittedly, I have not read page one. Feel free to yell at me for being an idiot.) AussieMeg, the write-in vote (serious or joking) does not affect the rest of the ballot. Mickey Mouse always gets some votes. One of our U.S. senators was actually re-elected as a write-in candidate, after she lost her primary to a far right-wing extremist. (Our system is complicated.) But she was popular enough overall in her state to be able to win with a write-in campaign.

However I thought I heard that any ballots where Newsom’s name is written in will be excluded for question #2 only. Meaning we can’t “elect” him.

I hope that he is not recalled, but there is no guarantee. We could have a repeat of the last recall and end up with a Republican governor. If he is recalled, we end up with the person with the most votes, even if it is a small percentage. Please don't leave question #2 blank or write in a cat's name. That would just increase the chances of a Republican win. I haven't researched all of the Democratic candidates, but I will vote for one. It won't be the first time that I vote for the least objectionable person.

all i know is what i saw newsom say on tv recently. he said that if you are against the recall, then you only have to answer one No on the recall. you don't need to do anything else.
i heard some people saying they are writing in his name in addition to voting no. but doesn't that defeat the purpose of answering "no"?

Californian here. Many people I know, who are politically naive or just plain politically ignorant, want Newsom out because he got caught eating at a restaurant when he was preaching the opposite, kept his winery open when he forced others closed, or because he closed the beaches and kept them from their right to surf. Honestly I couldn’t make this shit up. These are the reasons they are willing to fuck the entire country up.
(I don’t know how much truth there is to the winery thing. That’s just their reason)

They are thinking if he doesn’t get 51% of the “no” votes, he’ll hopefully get the most votes in the second section. The second section doesn’t need a majority, just the most votes. But I don’t think he is allowed to be in the second section, so those write-ins won’t count.

I think Newsom is making another mistake by suggesting we leave the second question blank. It helps the Republicans if the recall is successful.

ONLY if it's yes, should a name be picked and it can't be him because you already voted YES to boot him out. that's why newsom said there was only box to check if you don't want him recalled and that's "No". aside from being a waste of money, there is so much confusion going on right now. i saw in my USPS Informed Digest our ballots are being delivered today. i guess i'll see for myself how it's laid out.

Seriously this is nothing but an attempted power grab by the Republicans that has been helped by a bunch of snowflakes who had their noses pushed out of joint for no real reason so they signed the petition. I’m so disgusted with this entire mess that other then voting “no” for the recall I will not be voting for any of the 46 loser candidates. But I have been thinking, instead of putting Fred’s name as a write in I may put Jerry Brown’s name instead. Its too damn easy in this state to recall someone for nothing. The changes that should be made to the recall process should either raise the number of signatures needed or require the person or organization that starts the recall process pay for the cost of the election if they gather enough signatures. Make those who sign the petition chip in for the cost. $200M it’s costing the California taxpayer for this election. And the taxpayers have to pay for two more elections next year. Elections where Newsom is up for re-election! It’s just plain madness. And that ends my rant on this subject.

When it became clear there would be a recall election I believed that it would be a slam dunk that Newsom would keep his job. I mean after all we are a “blue” state and there were no big name Democrats running if it was voted “yes”.
As it gets closer it’s becoming clearer a chunk of Democratic voters are going to sit out this election. I guess they don’t think it’s worth the effort.
Meanwhile Republican voters are “energized” which means they will show up and vote.
Who is the supposed favorite? trump supporter Larry Elder. Its been suggested that he could become Governor with as little as 6% of the vote.
So maybe if Elder becomes Governor and causes chaos, which he will do, those “can’t be bothered to vote Democrats” will finally understand ALL elections are important and ALL elections have consequences and they had darn well better show up and vote at every single election.
I believe that was another rant.

Pamphlets have already gone out. We got ours yesterday. I went to the library this morning and they already have a manned ballot box. Two employees. We don’t have our ballots yet 🤦♀️. They said we should get them within a week. We have several of these stations set up around town. The election isn’t until September 14th. We never have been able to vote this early snd the only thing on the ballot is the recall. Huge waste of money. I like manned drop off boxes to prevent fraud and don’t have an issue with that but usually it’s a week or two at most this is four weeks. Plus there are polling locations day of. I assume this is all across the state so thousands of people sitting around for 4 vs 1-2 weeks.

I didn't support the recall for Schwarzenegger and I don't support it for Newsom.
Recalls are a hugely expensive and largely ineffective political stunt.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised even if I hate everything I have heard he supports. I didn’t think the recall would happen but at this point I’m kind of resigned to it happening. People need to get out and vote because I can guarantee every Republican I know is going to be voting. Not voting only hurts democrats at this point. I’m afraid it will be total chaos.

I think the instructions are clear: "vote both sides of ballot" and "candidates to succeed Gavin Newsom as governor if he is recalled". If we vote no and can't vote on the second page, we are prohibited from selecting our next governor. That is not a democratic situation.

I haven’t even opened my ballot yet, so take this with a grain of salt. Everyone should be able to vote for a replacement governor (and WAS able, last time), no matter how they voted on the recall itself. Last time, the Democratic lieutenant governor ran so there would be a Democrat on the ballot. I voted against the recall and for him. My understanding is that there isn’t a single Democrat running this time, but as I said, I haven’t looked yet.

There are nine Democrats running. Some are easy to toss out, say the college student (I want someone with more experience). CalMatters says a write in vote for Newsom will not be counted. In fact, write in candidates have to file by August 31st.
