"By every relevant metric, the COVID crisis in Tennessee is intensifying. Infections, hospitalizations, and fatalities are on the rise in the Volunteer State, where only about 40% of the population is fully vaccinated, and the Tennessee National Guard has been deployed to help bolster increasingly overwhelmed hospitals. Dr. Lisa Piercy from the Tennessee Department of Health explained yesterday that the state's hospital network is facing "capacity concerns on both the pediatric side as well as the adult side." As child hospitalizations grow, the timing could be better: students are starting to head back to classrooms as infections climb. And it was against this backdrop that Tennessee's Republican governor took action -- which is to say, the wrong kind action. The New York Times reported: As the Delta variant fuels a new coronavirus wave, particularly in areas with underwhelming vaccination rates, Tennessee on Monday became the latest state where a governor has undermined efforts by local school districts to require students to wear masks as the new school year approaches. Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, signed an executive order on Monday essentially gutting any school district's effort to require its students to wear masks... Or as Dr. Jason Yaun, associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, put it, "I am so angry I am shaking. How do you sign an emergency order that is undoing actions to protect us from that emergency?"" www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/facing-covid-crisis-tennessee-gov-issues-misguided-mask-order-n1276964Beliefs > evidence? What is wrong with these people? They are literally playing russian roullette with children's lives to make their voting base feel "free". They have no souls and are perfectly content for the world to know it. My heart is breaking thinking of the ramifications of all of this foolishness these crazy governors are enforcing and my head hurts from trying to figure out how people can be happy about it.

The fucking republican governors are willing to risk the lives of children (just like they do with any word of gun control after a school shooting) as collateral damage on their rise to/ gain of political power .

Asshole. And then they will blame the teachers when schools have to close due to illness or teacher shortage due to being sick.
The other commonality in most of these antimmask mandate states is the lack of a strong teacher union.

I was watching the news conference live and he was talking something to the effect of about how this (COVID) is an adult problem that doesn't affect children. I had to turn it off shortly afterward. My eyes were hurting from the rolling.

Sadly a lot of states have this mandate.
Texas, Florida, Arizona off the top of my head.

Even while their children are dying, they will continue to fight mask mandates.

Nothing these traitorous morons in positions of power do surprises me any more. It's all so pathetic, so DEPLORABLE, so inhumane. I'm not sure it's moronic though. "They" promote ignorance because ignorant people can be readily manipulated into believing lies, as we have too heartbreakingly seen in our crumbling society.
My heart aches for all of the innocents who suffer as a result: teachers, medical care providers and other essential workers who show up to do their jobs at great risk, the children whose parents/guardians are too stupid to do all they can to protect them and all who are put in harm's way.
We have dear friends expecting their first baby any day now in Tennessee. I imagine that is terrifying right now for all sorts of reasons.

Thanks for sharing that clip, @zingermack. I am grateful for people like him, while thinking it must be so hard to live surrounded by such willful ignorance and cruelty.

I live in North East TN. I honestly hate this state. Our county just opened a new high school, merging 3 of 4 area high schools. It was first told during planning that around 1200 students would be at the school. Now that school has been in session a week, the real numbers are here--over 1900 students from grades 9-12. The hallways are packed during class change and lunch. Busses are packed, with kids sitting in the aisles. Classes are packed full. Last spring our BOE dropped ALL COVID PRECAUTIONS.
No plans for masks, not sure if they are going to even notify parents if there are cases of verified Covid exposure. Parents are angry. Very angry. My grandson got Covid last October and gave it to his sister and me. Luckily, it was mild for us all. Both grandkids are vaccinated but I am still worried. I can tell them to wear a mask but without it being mandatory, I am sure it will come off the second I drop them off at school.

I must be stupid, but why? Are they just that evil? Is it purely political? How can they even live with themselves after making these decisions?

I must be stupid, but why? Are they just that evil? Is it purely political? How can they even live with themselves after making these decisions? They are believing all of the nonsense crap that Fox and OANN continuously spew. I have family in TN and they have all bought into it. I haven’t talked to any of them in months because I just can’t anymore with their lack of following any actual science. It’s all “Fauci was wrong!” “Masks don’t work!” “God gave our bodies the perfect immune system and it works as it was intended!” I could go on and on. I’m sure their church leadership had a lot to do with them being steered in that direction.
