Not sure if the title makes sense. A few weeks ago we were sitting in a ferry line with our car windows open. The conversation of the driver in a car the next row over was being broadcast outside the car through a speaker. It was the weirdest thing. At first we thought they were just talking loudly and we were going to have to listen to this annoying conversation. Then we realized all her windows were closed. And we realized we could not hear anything she was saying in the car. We could see her talking and not hear any of it. We were only hearing the other person who was connected through the car bluetooth. And it was being clearly broadcast through a speaker outside the car. I forgot up this until the same thing happened while I was driving home yesterday. While stopped at a light, I could hear the person responding to the driver clearly outside the car. I could see the driver talking, but not hear any of his side of the conversation. FWIW, these events took place 1200+ miles apart in different countries. Have you experienced this?

A speaker brodcast outside? That's weird, why would anyone have an outside speaker unless you are an emergency type vehicle?
I hear plenty of people having conversations inside their car when they are on bluetooth, but the speaker is inside the car, not mounted outside.
I don't think they realize how loud it is, I think they get so caught up in their conversation for they forget.

I'm 100% sure these people had no idea half their conversation was being broadcast outside the vehicle. Or that their vehicle has an external (?) speaker. And it sounded exactly like a LEO vehicle talking to you. When I searched "cars with external speakers", Tesla is the only one that comes up. (ETA neither of these were Teslas)

I heard this just last week. Thought they were just talking super loud and then realized the windows were down and I was just hearing the person on the other end of convo, not the person in the car by me. I went on into the shop and was going to say something when i came out, but she had already left.

External speakers not needed for this to happen. I work at a gas station and this happens almost daily with all cost points of vehicles It's a mix if bluetooth and speaker quality and volume I think.

Most speakers are usually in the door or side panels, and the newer cars have thin panels. So if it is loud, you can hear the speakers outside the car.

I can hear people on the phone like that in their car sometimes. Not really sure how it happens.

Yes. It happened all the time during pick up at my grandsons school. They lined us up in the packing lot so there were cars on both sides. I always turned my car off and put my windows down. Any way, it was really common and weird to be sitting next to a car and hear a one sided conversation coming from a car but not the driver. Every now and then the driver would have their window down and I could here the whole conversation. I don’t think the driver realized how clear someone not in the car could hear the other person. I usually rolled up my car’s windows and turned on the radio.

I think sometimes people put their phone on speaker and crank up the volume to to hear better, and don't realize that everyone else can hear their conversation, even through closed doors.

My neighbor had a car that did this. It was her prior car, maybe a slightly older Lexus? It as definitely her blue tooth setup. I think I was able to hear both sides of the conversation.

Often. People don't realise that the other half of the conversation can be heard from outside. I need to do a sound test with my DH's car sometime, because mine is too old to have the facility but his has it.

I really don't think it's external like you think. I hear it often, especially in the parking ramp at work or other parking lots where people are finishing up their conversations. 100% sure not every single one of those cars has external speakers (and why would they?).

He is hard of hearing and just likes volume loud anyway. The entire neighborhood can probably hear who ever he is talking with even though they can't hear him.

If people are talking on their phone connected to their car speakers, you can hear it outside the car when they're stopped. I know that when I pull into the lot at school, many times people are having a conversation on their phone and I can hear it.

(ETA neither of these were Teslas) It is like when you are on speakerphone - the person who is on the other end of the line is broadcast loudly over your phone’s speakers, but when you speak to them, your voice isn’t amplified. The same happens when you use Bluetooth in your car - their voice is broadcast loudly over your speakers, but your own voice isn’t broadcast on your own speakers, it is only picked up by your microphone and sent to the listener. No one outside the car would hear your voice, while they hear the caller’s voice broadcast over your own speakers. That is just how Bluetooth/speakerphone calls work.

If people are talking on their phone connected to their car speakers, you can hear it outside the car when they're stopped. Interesting and makes sense because both times I've heard it is when the car is stopped. I drive by people every day who are talking on their phones and never hear half their conversations.
