It's SOO good to hear that he's getting more care now, and I'll bet the Zoom meeting was very helpful! Glad they *at least* prescribed Tylenol 2's and Tizanidine. I hope that once hospice care starts, they will address his increased pain even more! I LOVE that your friend brought over some yummy pasta with seafood! I'll bet that really brightened yours and Gary's day! My doggies and I WISH we lived nearby so we could help! Hopefully, hospice will ALSO provide you with people that can help with bathing, changing his linens, making sure he's re-positioned in bed often, etc. I know you're being EXTREMELY careful about going out in public, so there may be volunteers that will sit with him while you run to get groceries, prescriptions, etc. Or even better---they might be able to do your grocery shopping for you, then you don't have to worry about being exposed to Covid! I don't know if you saw my post where I mentioned that there are aides (the NON-nursing kind) that can come to your home and help with cleaning, laundry, cooking, etc. This may not be covered by your insurance---BUT, there are people who volunteer! I realize they might be very short-staffed due to soooo many patients at home recovering from Covid, though. I hope that someone can help you, since you must be totally exhausted! Plus, as you've told us, you also suffer from horrific pain, too. You've mentioned alllllll the driving to his appointments and how difficult that is for you, also. There are also volunteers that will drive you/him to and from medical appointments. Again, that may be difficult to get because of sooo many Floridians recovering from Covid, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. More (( hugs )) !!!!

How funny---after posting to you just now, the next thread I saw was about people making lasagne for others! I hope you and Gary get a yummy lasagne !!! lasagnalove.org/get-involved/
This also reminded me---you may qualify for "Meals on Wheels!" With ALL you do every day for Gary, PLUS, your own pain issues, wouldn't it be nice to get some meals delivered? www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/

I've been so busy myself and must have missed your update about Gary. I'm glad he's found a bit of relief with the back pain. It sounds like you've really got the ball rolling for his care! I hope some of the suggestions that the peas have posted work. And it's so awesome that you guys had a visitor who were able to brighten your day! My husband and I pray for you both every evening

drummergirl65 : Praying for you also!! xo scrappintoee : Meals on Wheels is a big fat "no" again!! I checked 10 years ago and they said that our county is "too poor" to set up deliveries but there's a soupkitchen room to go to. Geez, that's not the point! The homebound need deliveries, if possible. I checked again last week and they said that it's STILL not available here in New Port Richey. Not sure if it's the whole County or what..... I have to call the Agency of Aging (given to me by Nikki Fried here) and find out what else we could be entitled to, esp since they cut off our foodstamps and my daughter's too. Ugh..... Long story but she got a letter in the mail saying that she needed to call for a phone interview this time. The date was PAST due!!!! She called anyway and they stopped her Foodstamps for 2 months now. She can't even re-apply and it was their mistake. It's very frustrating. As for us, I really need help in preparing our long form with all of the medical bills, etc. I have until Halloween to do it, but I'm hoping to get it done next week if possible..... xo
jenjie : Thank you for the call yesterday. My gov't cellphone really has limited coverage, and lately it doesn't work inside hospitals! I've tried everything but it just drops everything (calls and texts and internet). Wonderful...... THANK YOU for thinking of me/us. You're so sweet. xo

The fact that Meals On Wheels can deny service because they deem your area "too poor" is infuriating

Do you have a Sikh temple in your area? The Sikh community usually distribute cooked meals, and sometimes food packs. It's free and open to everyone.

As far as churches here, we don't belong to a church. SHINE (helps elderly people) said that we'd have to join the church, give them our financial info and then have an interview. Honestly we haven't had much down-time to even do that.
As far as Gary's chemo, today was his 2nd day and it went well. He feels good (must be the steroids). Tomorrow is his 3rd chemo day and then he's off for 3 weeks and we'll try to do 1 more round again. He felt well enough to insist on doing the driving today. Good day. We take each day as it comes.
Gotta run to bed. Have to pick up my daughter's cat who stayed overnight in an animal hospital. He either has cancer or a bad infection and was being treated as though it's an infection. They told her that if it's cancer, it would be too rough on him at his age (15) to think of putting him through that route, so DD33 has been very sad at the thought of having to put him down if he gets worse. This came out of the blue. His brother was the one in kidney failure (almost a year now), but he's been doing GREAT (thanks to my 2 year old kitty who is his best friend. They run together like kittens!)

Not that I know of. I'll check. I haven't even seen one temple since we moved here 10 years ago. It's a heavily southern religious area, rural. We see Baptist churches and a few different types, but mostly Christian churches....... I WILL look though. Thank you.

I don’t think you need to belong to a church to get MOW from them. My mom and I volunteered for MOW for over 20 years through a Presbyterian Church here in town and we didn’t attend the church. A lot of the people we cooked for didn’t belong either. I hope you can find something similar in your area.
In my prayers.

Another couple thoughts, when hospice comes in, be sure to have an extensive conversation with their social worker about all your needs/ concerns.
Also, have you tried contacting the American Cancer Society? Sometimes they can point to resources in your area.

I’m glad that the chemo has been tolerable. I pray that that continues. And that the antibiotics help the your DD’s cat. Our Catholic Church back in Virginia gave $40 worth of staples, free of asking. If you needed more, there was a screening process. But you could get that $40 bag with no questions asked, every time. The screening wasn’t to judge if you were worthy, but as a way of allocating resources. The coordinator knew where there was assistance for utilities or rent, fuel cards, etc. she was a very valuable resource. I can’t speak for every church, but it could be worth a try. And no, you don’t need to be Catholic.

Also, have you tried contacting the American Cancer Society? Sometimes they can point to resources in your area. Absolutely reach out to hospice. They should have social workers, DME, respite care, financial assistance and all sorts of things at their fingertips. I don’t know if you have a notebook, but I know my mom always made sure their patients had one to write down notes, questions, and contacts in. Sometimes you think of something at 2 am but forget all about it when the nurse comes. If you have a notebook it helps keep track of what you wanted to ask about. I will keep you and Gary in my thoughts and prayers.

I want to add to the hospice love. I’ve never met a group of more kind and helpful people.
I took care of my mom at the end of her life, and our hospice social worker was amazing at helping us navigate and come to terms with our complicated relationship. I had moved out of her home (at my request) at age 12 and we had no contact again until i was pregnant with my son at age 28/29. I hope they are as kind and helpful to you and Gary as they were to me and my mom.
Been thinking about the two of you a lot. If you lived closer, I’d deliver a “Lasagne Love.” Hugs and many warm, caring thoughts.

Regarding Hospice: Gary signed up last night and they began coming today. The intake guy (I think he's an RN) was very pleasant and personable. We made it clear that Gary was going in 3 weeks for another round of 3-day chemo. He said he'd put it in his notes, and if Moffitt's oncologist wanted to do more scans, we'd have to let them know ahead of time. Fine....... Sounded all great.
A chaplain came today and Gary appreciated it greatly. Then his head nurse from his team came for a long visit. She was quite frank and it was all a bit too upsetting. She said that he should think about even doing any more chemo or going to Moffitt since his prognosis was dire. She said it takes too much out of patients and in the long run it shortens their life. UPSETTING. We have full faith in Moffitt and really wanted to see if this chemo and the next round would shrink the tumors and give him a bit more time. If not, we'd re-think Moffitt.
My question to all of you people who have hospice experience: Was it that frank and upsetting to you??? They've cut out almost all of DH's meds except for a few. They added stronger pain meds, which I understand. They did explain a lot of the benefits of their hospice, but said they'd do chemo or treatment on their own if needed. They won't have a lot of the meds and things that Moffitt has to offer though. Moffitt has oncologists in each department. Hospice has a very experienced oncologist but it scares me a lot. It's as though we're saying that we give up and we're just asking them to make Gary comfortable. It ALMOST sounds like they want him to enjoy life as much as he can and not worry about "more time". That scares me.
When our pharmacist (who is a wonderful friend and extremely knowledgeable guy!!) asked about refilling Gary's monthly meds, I informed him about all of his meds that were stopped and he was shocked. That alone gives me pause.
Any thoughts??
Regarding other assistance: Hospice's social service person will call. We've tried via Moffitt's social service dept, and they said that transportation didn't work out because we were "too close". They DID get Gary a walker. That was about it......
Regarding churches, etc., if an assessment is via phone, I'm fine with that, but at this point Gary isn't going anywhere and he's been in bed most of the time. I've tried Catholic Charities here (no go). I've gone down a huge list given to me by our Congressman's office and hit dead ends with each one. Luckily we DO get some food delivered via The Volunteer Way (a local charity) once a month-mostly canned items and pasta/rice, etc...... They are very sweet.
I'll try to figure my way through this. I've been preoccupied with Hospice for the past few days. I haven't even gotten to shower or wash my hair and I thought that today was going to be a calmer day. I've been on the phone, answering the door and sitting with people since 9 am. Phew!
TIA.
P.S.: Gary has had a rough day today. Must be the chemo finally hitting him, so he's been in bed a lot. He's having a lot of side effects, so we're trying to deal with each one as they come. He's nauseous and hurt and tired. I have a feeling that it's going to keep getting worse quickly.

Hospice is wonderful and caring and I can understand you being upset with what they propose to you. I think that’s a conversation that you and Gary have to have. Is it worth months of pain and sickness and discomfort from chemo versus being able to spend quality time together. A very good friend of mine declined chemo because just like in Gary’s case, they said it could give her a couple extra months. She chose to spend the time she had left not putting all of the chemicals and then having all the side effects in her body. But again that’s something that the two of you have to decide.

Big, big (((hugs))) to you & Gary.
If you are uncomfortable with how frank the hospice nurse was, share your feelings & concerns. They are only human, and their word is not law. You can touch base with Gary's doctors and share your concerns about the direction the hospice people seem to be leaning.
Also, please link or share any way we can gift you giftcards for local restaurants that deliver, or anything that would make that one thing easier for you.

It sounds like they have admitted him into Hospice with a terminal diagnosis and less than 6 months to live, as opposed to palliative care. I'm a Florida nurse with lots and lots of experience with Hospice admissions. Did they explain to you that nothing will be covered outside of terminal medications? This is why they have dc'd most of his meds, and discouraged chemo. You cannot have two Medicare benefits at the same time, and what has happened is that Hospice is now the primary benefit, not Moffitt. Chemo will be paid for by Hospice only if they deem it necessary for his comfort. Please PM with with questions about this because it can be VERY confusing.
Unfortunately, no matter how gentle they try to convey the graveness of the situation, it is never easy to hear. I'm sorry that you guys felt it was upsetting. And much of the time, no matter how frank the doctors are, it's the Hospice nurse that bears the burden of frankness.
I am so sorry for all you are going through. Please, please, I am urging you to understand your hospice benefit completely. If it was not explained properly please call admissions and ask for the social worker to come out and break it down for you. I have a feeling that things were not laid out properly here. It sounds like Hospice is under the impression that they are there to make your husband comfortable for end of life as opposed to palliative care, which is what I think you were looking for.

When my Mom went to hospital for hospice (they have a dedicated area) all my siblings had to agree to a DNR. She had to stop any treatments as they didn't do much for her anyway. (This was in 2010 so maybe things are different now?)She was very well looked after there. There was always one of us there. It was set up with a pullout for overnight guests in her room and down the hall was a kitchen dining room with a TV. Her nurses were just so kind. I think the hardest part for us was knowing she wasn't coming home. It was a very difficult time but was made better knowing she was well tended to if we needed to go home and shower or check on the kids etc. It's a shock knowing how quickly everything is progressing. Give yourself time to process. How is Gary doing with all this news?
ETA: I'm in Canada so I have no real experience with insurance companies. For us it's covered under our Provincial Health

At this point, focus is changed to making the patient as comfortable as possible. I know some people do maintain in Hospice for quite some time, my neighbor's mother lasted several years, but sadly most others have passed very soon after entering this phase. That's my experience. I won't presume this is your experience, @bergdorfblonde. Tender, gentle, calming {{{hugs}}} and prayers for peace of mind and body for you both.

@bergdorfblonde first of all I am so sorry. 😔 does the cousin know anything about hospice? Just because he knows meds doesn’t mean he understands this. I’m not saying that to be mean. Since he is someone you trust and he appears at least somewhat knowledgeable, see if the doc will talk to him if he (cousin) is willing.
Our situation was different. We were told immediately that Fred’s situation was so dire that if the first round of chemo didn’t work, hospice would be the next step. Thankfully it did work and we were able to have a few more months. But the doctor was very pleasantly surprised.
Honey it sounds like maybe after that last test, it became evident to the docs that Gary’s situation is worse than they thought. I’m so sorry. The idea of hospice is to keep them comfortable for the time they have left. You can talk to his team.
