Now that I'm back in the office a few days a week, I need to do something to make this place not so blah. I have a new cubicle/desk, in a much better location. However it's that awful putty color, desk and cubicle walls. My old one was gray which was at least less gloomy.
I'm trying to figure out a way to cover the walls, in a non permanent way. I can't take them apart or do anything permanent. Do you think I could just staple some fabric up? I don't want a bunch of different posters etc.
How about the desk top. Again I can't do permanent. Any ideas?

Are they soft or hard?
There is that vinyl removable wall covering, more like cling type. Or you could use ordinary clings if hard.

Go to Pinterest and search office cubicle decor. Lots of ideas there.

Can you get a sheet of plexiglass to go over the desk top? Then you can lay photos and other pretty things on the desk and cover it with the glass.
Get a hutch to put on top of your desk and place personal objects/ fun items--whatever makes you happy--on the shelves. You can then attach anything you like in any WAY you like to the space below the shelves, cuz it belongs to you.
String some fairy lights around the top of the cubical?

In the past I’ve used fabric and pins to cover cubicle walls and added coordinating bunting/banners for different seasons/holidays. It made such a difference!!
A string of colorful felt balls would be fun, too.
ETA: I have also replaced all the desk accessories with ones I’ve purchased in fun colors & patterns.

When I was working in a cubicle the one thing that really made a difference to me was having some plants in my space. I was only working in a cubicle for about two or three years but it was what made a big difference to me. I had a filling cabinet that was very useful for holding plants on top and in the bottom drawer supplies for my plants as well as my briefcase.

DEFINITELY plants!
In my years of being sentenced to cube-hell, I would put up puzzles that I had "modge-podged" together and I would attach them to the wall.
Colorful pencil holders and staplers also had some zing.
I also LOVE LOVE LOVE adult coloring, in particular mandalas. I have framed several of the ones with black backgrounds that I have colored. Put them in a black frame and they POP!

In our cubicles at work a lot of people get nice (heavier weight) wrapping paper and sort of wallpaper the walls with it. They used a little tacky stuff in the corners/edges. Some cubes are fabric and they just used pins.

I'd hang a good size mirror so that I could see who or what is behind me.

Those tapestries that are popular in college to hang on the walls.. those would work in your cube.

That level of decoration would be frowned upon in our offices. A plant, a desk lamp and maybe a couple pictures are as far as I would go.
What do other folks do in your offices?

I had a small, pretty lamp on desk. It gave off a warmer light than the overhead fluorescent lights. I thought that made a huge difference.

I moved to telework a year before the pandemic but before that I used rolls decorative paper from Michaels and pinned it to my cubical walls and taped it to the side of my file cabinet. I also brought in a small wooden table that fit in a corner and I had framed pictures hanging - the framed pictures made a big difference to me because they had more of a “home” look. I didn’t worry about the actually desk itself because it was always covered with work . We actually had sit/stand desks though. Two different ones that formed an L and they were nice enough looking. I had a shelf above one desk that I didn’t raise that had more framed pictures and other personalized things.

What do other folks do in your offices? cmpeter I just reread what you wrote.... and misunderstood hence why my long message below.. DUH.. I thought it said "what do other folks do" as in everyone else here on the board. I feel like I hijacked... HAHA My office is decorated to the hilt... they even painted a mural on my wall. I would take a picture but I can't have my phone in with me. I was part of a beautification program to spruce up the joint, until covid hit. So all the walls are grey, 3 light greys and 1 medium grey, then there are modern type flowers painted on my main wall in white, yellow and pink. Mostly white with touches of yellow/pink. One wall is all glass and I have my Pop Funkos sitting on a ledge there... Pretty Woman main characters, Danny and Sandy from Grease, The Office people, the cheerleaders from SNL and Jennifer Gardner's character from Alias. Everyone loves to come in and guess who they are. haha... And on one wall a painting that matches the colors of my office that I won at an (work) auction, and a couple of Starbuck's glasses that were gifts, plus a couple of coffee cups .. one from Friends and one from Survivor shows. Oh and my own fridge. (My boss and I share a microwave but she has that in her office) You never know when you will get stuck at work for an extend period of time. It's good to have something to eat just in case. Cause there is no leaving your area during emergencies. Sounds like a lot but since it is what it is here at work, we are pretty lucky to get to personalize our offices/cubes how we want.

I would get a few floor plants to brighten up the area and leave the walls alone. Decorating them could end up looking like a dorm room.
Also a small, bright area rug and a lamp in your desktop would work well.

Thanks for the input everyone.
My office is EXTREMELY casual and laid back. And we generally do not have outside people come in. It's a non public office within a University Library. Most of my coworkers have some level of decor, mostly very casual. Lots of fandom posters, tchotchke, large cardboard cut outs of Star Wars or Harry Potter characters, string lights, Narwal stuffed animals etc. Some just have piles and piles of crap. I don't think anyone is going to get upset by some fabric, string lights, plants/pictures etc.

Oh please, the powers that be, don't let any of us on this board be into any velvet painting!😂😂, But the fun factor of making people wonder in a setting like yours, that's my jam.

Similar situation for me. I got moved twice during WFH to different office spaces in their effort to separate us more (had been in a common space). I work at a major university and am in "public viewing" type situation (faculty, students and staff all potentially can come in our offices.) I returned in person in July of this year. Still getting settled. One thing I decided to do was to bring in fresh flowers for myself weekly. That helps a lot. I bought a couple of small plants yesterday at Trader Joe's that hopefully I won't kill. We can't put holes in the walls. I decided I am going to get some photos that I have taken of the beach (my fave place) printed in a big larger size and hang those up (command strips). That will take me to my happy place. Working in person now is so different than it was pre-pandemic. I don't feel the same joy that I used to, so trying hard to brighten up the space. Good luck.

If the walls are soft, what about pretty scrapbook paper?

I hope you can post some before and after pics when you're done decorating!
I remember years ago when the company I work for decided to 5S every single workplace in the country, including the offices. (Lean Manufacturing Methodology.) We were only allowed to have TWO personal items on our desks. So like one photo and one vase or whatever. It was ridiculously strict. And we had an audit every fricken week to make sure we were complying.
