I'm Canadian and I was reading your posts on what you are serving for thanksgiving and wow I'm amazed at the more vast menu.
Maybe its a location thing but anyone I know we serve pretty basic meals compared to yours.
Turkey Stuffing Potatoes Turnip Carrots peas corn
cranberries and pumpkin or apple pie

I don't see a lot of difference. In Canada we don't usually have cornbread stuffing or green bean casserole. We've added a couple of things to our traditional Thanksgiving/Christmas menu that many Americans have, which is sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top and mac n'cheese from scratch.

I also thought that the menus were pretty much the same... except for the nasty sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and the goop known as green bean casserole. Seriously, I don't understand how either of those are appealing. But they obviously are... even if I think they are revolting.
ETA: Other things I've noticed that I think are cool is the mac and cheese that pops up on some menus and cornbread. I do love both but wouldn't consider either for a "formal" meal so it's neat to see them.

My brother-in-law from Ontario was the one who introduced the sweet potato casserole to the family. I think he and I are the only ones who eat it and I treat it like a dessert after I've eaten all my savory foods. lol

Oh Geeze Louise I love love love candied yams/sweet potato casserole, with brown sugar and pecans. Oh, that's the stuff right there. It isn't Thanksgiving without it. My perfect plate actually only has like 2% of turkey. The rest is all that lovely carby mashed stuff.

We don't do marshmallows on our yams either. Lots of butter, brown sugar and mandarin oranges and a touch of cinnamon - yummy. We also do not do green bean casserole and feel the same way you do about it. We do do a cranberry jello salad thing though that I am sure most people would cringe about. It is funny most guests were afraid to try it but if they did they always went back for seconds lol. Lots of berries and cream cheese.

My favorite cranberry sauce is the fresh cranberries cooked in water with sugar till they 'pop'..and then a splash of some Grand Marnier and grated orange peel..ahhhh heaven. Got the recipe years ago from Bon Appetit.
Man my mouths is watering...

When we host, the menu is exactly the same as what I did in Canada:
- turkey
- bread stuffing
- gravy
- mashed potatoes
- roasted onions, brussel sprouts, carrots and butternut squash
- spanakopita (Greek spinach pie)
- cranberry sauce (like @oh yvonne described)
- pumpkin and apple pie
We rotated hosting with some of DH's cousin for many years and they always servied candied yams and green bean casserole, so I have tried them but no one in our family wanted to add them to our menu. I always let the guests know what was on the menu so they could bring along anything they felt needed to be added, so the yams & green beans usually showed up . We started deep frying the turkey when we moved to the US and I have done it that way every since. The bird might not be pretty, but we never carved at the table so it wasn't a big deal. I love not having to deal with the turkey and knowing it is going to be perfectly cooked every time.

The yams I make have a pecan praline topping. Marshmallows are for s'mores! Lol! And my green beans have no cream of mushroom soup. Just French cut green beans and bacon. We also have cornbread dressing and it's a pretty simple but tasty recipe. We had our pre-Thanksgiving Family Feast yesterday in my home since next week we'll be with extended family. The only thing I made differently this time was the cranberry sauce. I added some blueberries and it turned out wonderful!

I had never even seen green bean casserole until I got to my early twenties. Our yam dish is served without marshmallows.

We do
Turkey Rolls Stuffing made in the bird Dressing baked in the oven Roasted carrots and parsnips Party potatoes (way better than regular mashed potatoes, and so full of fat and heavy cream you can only make it once a year) Oyster stuffing Green beans with lemon, garlic and toasted shaved almonds Gravy Fresh cranberry sauce
Pecan and pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream for dessert.

That's pretty much the same thing we have here. I am sure there are some in both countries that love to cook a variety and really have a big menu. But for the most part, it sounds like both countries have the same thing.

no green bean casserole here either - I make old-fashioned green beans instead with fresh green beans, bacon and brown sugar
no marshmallows on my sweet potatoes either - I don't have a recipe I make every year, we mix it up, but never marshmallows. This year it's a sweet potato souffle topped with brown sugar/pecans
we have a bunch of vegetable sides (green beans, Brussels sprouts, glazed carrots, creamed corn, mashed turnip) because we're trying to have it seem feastlike (food in abundance) without it being carb, carb, carb. We still serve stuffing and sweet potatoes but I can skip them or just have a taste and still have a full plate of yummy and not feel deprived. [unlike the thanksgiving lunch at the school today where I had turkey, a dab of mashed potatoes and canned green beans...ugh)

We use to serve green bean casserole with Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. My mother discovered a recipe for unbundled green beans several years ago and now we serve this.

I don't have an exact recipe, but the way we do it is to add butter, sour cream, cream cheese and heavy cream to the potatoes while they're being mashed. After they are the desired consistency you add them to a buttered casserole dish and pop it uncovered into the oven until the very top layer is golden brown. I like to add small pats of butter to the top layer before I put it in the oven, too. And now you know why I only make it once a year .

When I saw your description in the original post (full of fat & heavy cream), I immediately though of what we call Aunt Tinky's Potatoes. The only difference is we added grated cheddar cheese to the top instead of butter and then everyone fought over the top layer.

Ours is pretty simple. However there are only seven of us and a couple are super picky and one is picky AND has several food allergies, so getting creative can be difficult.
Turkey Stuffing Mashed Potatoes Gravy Roasted Butternut Squash Green Bean Casserole (plain corn or green beans for my nephew with the food allergies) Cranberry Sauce Rolls Pumpkin Pie Apple Pie

Mine is usually the same as iluvpink's - I love the butternut squash and try to make it every year even though I'm usually the only one who eats it.

Yum! Could you please share the recipe for the party potatoes?
I saw someone mention party potatoes on another Thanksgiving thread and googled it. I found a recipe on Taste of Home. We are going to have them for Thanksgiving this year instead of plain mashed potatoes. Sorry I don't know how to do links or I would.
