Last week there was a thread abouy buying mums and the fact that even the expensive ones don't always last.
My response was I buy the cheap ones at Aldi and Walmart and dig a hole in the flower bed, plop them in and hope for the best. I have had pretty good success with this method, and have managed to keep the 2019 and 2020 plants alive so far. The have been blooming for most of the summer.
When I was at Walmart the other day I saw a woman with several small mums in 4 inch pots. I started to ask her where they were, but was in a hurry and didn't have time to wander to the other end of the store.
The next day DS and I were at another Walmart and I went to the garden center and they had tons of mums, all sizes.
I ended up buying 10 (yes, 10) of the small ones. In my defense, they were ONLY A DOLLAR!!
I also bought one that was a bit bigger, maye a 7 inch pot for $4.96.
Yep, I brought home 11 mums and spent yesterday planting them, although my 2019 plant is starting to look kind of scraggly, especially next to the new ones.
So if you want to put some mums in without a huge investment, get thee to (hated by many) Walmart.
You're welcome, LOL

Around here, we have September/October early mums, and late October/November mums.
We buy 2x a season to keep them going.
I actually haven’t got mine yet, I have some rusty dracaena, Celosia, coleus, Rex begonias and dahlias that are giving off all sorts of fall vibes!

About five years ago I went to a local greenhouse and bought five of their sad almost dead mums that they were trying to bring back to life. They are currently in two different garden areas of my yard and are thriving. I always laugh at my $2.49 deal. This place is expensive and I go there for their pots, good advice, and dying plants.

I have what I refer to as “the dead plant garden”. I bought a bunch of almost dead plants at Lowe’s to put in a new garden. They came back to life and are doing great. I bought one that was ground cover and it’s spread to cover half of a bank I have (8’x10’ish). when I had window boxes, I put the $1 mums in them.

Oh. Oh yeah. Those crazy Americans say mom, not mum. So I suppose when they are talking about mums, they mean chrysanthemums, not mothers. At least I hope that’s what they mean.

I was thinking what the... WHAT? Sad almost dead mums - what the actual...? Then the penny dropped. Or I suppose I ought to say, the cent dropped.
