I was just wondering how you tend to scrapbook. Ali E had asked a question in one of her videos about whether you were scrapbooking chronologically or if you were a story telling scrapbooker. Up until now, I have always scrapped chronologically. Don't shoot me, but my books are completely up to date from May 2000-June 2021. With that said, I have switched this year over to project life, 12x12 and so far have been scrapbooking month by month. I started this because I wanted to include little details from my life, keep up to date with what was going on, and journal more.
But given that I've recently begun subbing to her story kits and they don't always lend themselves to chronological scrapbooking, I'm considering something different. However, that will require me to take a bunch of pics and sort of stockpile pictures. I don't have years worth of pictures sitting around. They are all scrapbooked. With that said, I could just get a 6x8 album and use that to tell more stories. With the majority of my photos in the 12x12 album. I just don't know what I want to do. I'm open to tweaking my system, I just don't want to wait 6 months to have an actual big story to tell, does that make sense?
Anyone want to talk about how you do things, pluses and minuses?

I am chronological. Well, kind of. I have 2002-2008 unfinished (but have hundreds of layouts that need pictures on them). I do have 1994-2001 complete and 2009-2021 ish complete. I go back and work on previous years when I get caught up with current year.
Do you have any older pages that have stories you want to tell? Can you go back and pick a favorite set of photos and tell the story differently than you did in your original journaling? If I were in your shoes, I'd pick one event over the last 20 years to go back and update. Then take it from there. If you like it, take those older events and update, if not, can you make a book that is just your story? Take some of the old pictures from the previous 20 years and do ME book.

I'm not chronological nor am I a storyteller scrapper, I just scrapbook what I feel like scrapping. I'm not caught up with anything and don't really care that I'm behind. I'm always in awe of people who are caught up! That being said: Do you have any older pages that have stories you want to tell? Can you go back and pick a favorite set of photos and tell the story differently than you did in your original journaling? If I were in your shoes, I'd pick one event over the last 20 years to go back and update. Then take it from there. If you like it, take those older events and update, if not, can you make a book that is just your story? Take some of the old pictures from the previous 20 years and do ME book. This is what I would suggest too, if I were in your situation, I would go through my albums and see if there's any bigger story I could tell with some of the older photos.

I'm not familiar with Ali's kits. Are the Story kit prompts supposed to be about "me" or could they applied to anyone in your life?
I don't think there is anything wrong with having a photo in your regular scrapbook and the same photo in your "stories" album in order to further illustrate the story you are telling. If you don't want to have the same photo in two different albums, you could have a small reference on the layouts in your regular scrapbooks that lets you know there is a "deeper cut" in the Stories album. It could be as simple as a small icon on the corner of the page, or at the end of the journaling block, etc.
I would like to do something similar, but my long-term memory is rubbish so I don't know how many stories I'll be able to recall. I'm more inclined to try lists of childhood favorites (a la Layle Koncar) and if a memory is sparked then I can try for the story then. I also don't like to write, so the idea of creating lists sounds more manageable than writing all the stories.
I don't create chronological. I scrap whatever pictures inspire me. They could be from yesterday or 5 years ago. I have 10 scrapbooks that cover the years of my life so it's easy to file layouts away once created.

If I were in your shoes, I'd pick one event over the last 20 years to go back and update. This is a good idea. I am wanting to do some more journaling only layouts too. I have stories to tell, not necessarily a photo to go with it. Are the Story kit prompts supposed to be about "me" or could they applied to anyone in your life? I think they can apply to anyone. But certainly, at this point in my life, it really is a whole lot more about me, kwim? My kids are grown now. So most of my layouts are about what's going on in my own life. But I got to thinking about this month's kit. The theme was "teach" and I wanted to look back at several teachers I've had in my life and of course, I have no photos to scrap with, but I thought the stories of my favorite teachers would be something I'd want to write down.

Chronological for the most part. I’m seriously behind in my layouts. But I’m not a great story teller and I don’t take enough photos to be good at telling stories based on prompts. I tell stories based on the photos I take.

I did project life for 4 years, in 6x8. I'm in a (apparently long) slump, and I think I'm done with project life. My life now doesn't lend to that particular way any more. Which is ok. But what I (eventually) will go back to, is my 6x8 Short Stories album. There, I just told what I felt like. But I have a large cache of photos to work with, though. They are just 6x8 layouts, no pockets. Some definitely even have more than one photo. I don't necessarily think you have to have photos in reserve. Maybe if you come across some really good photos in your project life scrapping, print out a few extra to have to tell some other stories. And you don't even have to have photos all the time, either. Or say, if you want to tell a story about your running, maybe have a photo of your favorite trail or route ahead of time. Good luck with it.

my family albums are chronological but I try and do some longer journalling here and there.
I have an All About Me album (sadly neglected) which is more story telling - not all the pages have photos.

I think there are many styles and ways to scrapbook, and there is no right or wrong. It's what each indivual scrapbooker prefers and what works best for them personally.
I am a chronological scrapbooker, and I have been since I started(October 1996). Everything pertaining to my life goes in the scrapbook....day to day, travels, night out with friends, cat, Auntie-Niece dates, work stuff, High School friends gatherings, bbq, someones birthday party, Weddings, day at the whatever arts and crafts type festival, etc... I do >> 8.5 x 11. 3 ring binders(the kind with a front cover insert, I make a page layout for the cover) and sheet protectors. I scrapbook each year chronologically from January to December. Some years fill two scrapbooks(Jan-June and July-Dec). I use stickers, die cuts, mix and match patterned papers, frames, mat my photos, brighter bolder colors, very little pastel or vintage.
I like continuity and symmentry, so I will never change sizes or style of scrapbooks(binders).
I very rarely go out of chronological order. The only time I do, is if I need what I call a "filler page" >> one random layout to fill in a gap so a two page layout can stay side by side and not be back to back in the scrapbook the page flow. Filler pages a usually a page about my cat or something random, that particular photo(s) are usually out of chronological order by a week or two.
The only separate scrapbook I have is my scrapbook style journal. This contains, my writings, my bucket list, quotes-sayings-pieces of writing that someone else wrote, personal therapy journaling, etc...
My scrapbook journal is private and not available for others to view. My regular scrapbooks are available for viewing in my home or if I bring one to a gathering. My scrapbooks are NOT available for borrowing, meaning my scrapbooks do not leave my custody(that is not negotiable!). If someone wants to copy a few pages, I will gladly meet someone at the copy store to do so. Years ago, I loaned a Family member a set of film negatives, and never got them back, despite asking for them back numerous times. Lesson learned!

Just looking for pros and cons and opinions. I think there are many styles and ways to scrapbook, and there is no right or wrong. It's what each indivual scrapbooker prefers and what works best for them personally. I don't think there's any right or wrong way and I apologize if my OP implied there was. I was looking for everyone's opinion of why they do what they do. Basically what works for you and why. After 20 years of traditional scrapbooking, it took me a while to make the break for something else. And I really thought project life was going to be the way to go for me. And I have to say that I am enjoying the pocket pages immensely. I am scrapbooking photographs that probably would never have seen the inside of an album if was doing traditional layouts. So for me, that's a huge win. I'm just thinking about what would meet my needs even more and trying to decide what way to go. I just wanted everyone to share how they do it and why. No judgement, I swear.

I don't (currently) scrapbook anything that's not a trip we've taken.
The scrapbooks for our trips are in order by what we did each day.
I said currently above because I'm about to start a scrapbook of all of the ticketed events we've gone to together. Those will all be chronological, but also in different "categories" and then in date order within the category (ex., hockey games [98% of the scrapbook], basketball, etc.).
I want to start making a yearly scrapbook each year simply because I love scrapbooking and want to do more than just the trips we've taken. I was planning on starting this venture in 2020 since we both turned 30, but that went by the way side, and now it's already September 2021. Hopefully I can actually make it stick and do it for 2022.

I sort of do both, I guess.
I don't always scrap chronologically, but I organize my albums chronologically.
But I love telling stories. They don't have to be big ones. They can be moments. Silly things we say. A joke my kid tells. A favorite pair of sneakers. Our favorite movie or cartoon series of the season. A new hairstyle.
Sometimes those little micro memories carry more weight than another Thanksgiving or Easter scrapped.

I scrapbook in whatever strikes my fancy order. 😀
My twins are are 14 and their first year album is half finished. Over the past week I scrapbooked photos from 2009, 2014 and mid August of this year.
I scrapbook PL in chrono order. It is current through July 2021. This is in addition to my 12x12 albums.
I only scrapbook (full size 12x12) photos that evoke emotion or memories or have a story to tell. I rarely scrap birthdays, events, holiday. Those are tedious and dull for me. I’m more likely to put those type of events in PL.
I do make December Daily and Week In The Life Albums.

I do pocket scrapbooking chronologically and then “special” stories get their own layouts. If I can’t do it in 6x8 then I have another album for 9x12 and 12x12 layouts. The special stories are basically anything out of the ordinary: births, celebrations, fun stories, anything where I want to tell a story and be more creative. Now that I’m an empty nester, I want to do more introspective type layouts but i don’t see that happening until after the holidays. No time!
I’m a mini book nut and also do WITL and December Daily. I really enjoy those projects too.

I have a bunch of AE story kits from when I signed up for a year sub back when I thought I would be a story-teller scrapper. I love the look and the style and how others pull it off, but found it wasn't for me. My plan is to use a smaller album just for the story kits.

Basically what works for you and why. having read some of your replies, I'm going to expand on my answer. My family albums are chronological but I don't tend to scrap that way - I bounce around and just put the layouts away in order. When I get photos printed, I pop them into the correct album (or my working binder if they are current photos) in page protectors by probable layout. That way I can flip through and scrap what I want - or this month, flip through and find photos that'll work for whatever sketch I'm trying to do. I don't do individual kid albums for the most part - they each have a first year album, DS has a Boy Scout album, DDs have Girl Albums, the older two have soccer albums and graduation/high school albums. I do a separate album for DS - starting when he left for boot camp in Nov 2015...it's not just Navy pics, I scrap the photos he sends me. DD had a separate college album for the almost two years she was in dorms but now she's home - she's in the family albums instead. When she moves in with her brother - I'll scrap their photos together in an album. I also do trip albums for the family or if they do individual big trips (day trips and some weekend trips just go in the normal album). I mostly scrap everyday life plus events but I do a few 'moment' layouts - but the photos tend to lead my direction.

I do both chrono and storytelling. For the last several years I've kept some form of PL type album either weekly or monthly, which is where all the little stories go that would otherwise not make it into my albums (a fancy dessert, something funny on my walk, cute new shoes or outfit, a flower in my garden). Sometimes a bigger story builds up over time, so I might realise that those random photos of flowers in my garden lead into a bigger story about how the rose I have planted near my front door is my favourite of the ones I remember my grandfather growing at the last house he lived in (and the one I most associate with him) and how all the roses I first chose for my own house were ones he had in his garden (a story that is on my to do list). So I might reuse the photos I've already scrapped of my roses to tell this story.
Sometimes I think these other stories only become visible with time or a broader view. Using your example of your teachers, I think you'd get a different perspective if you scrapped each teacher individually in their chronological year, than if you take a my favourite teachers overall view, especially as you might see some commonalities in your favourites, or identify ways they have shaped the person you've become, that might not be as obvious when you look at each one individually. These could easily be scrapped with photos of you at the approx age you had those teachers, or with no photos at all.

I am not up to date, and I probably never will be. I scrapbook whatever photos I feel like scrapping, and then I place them chronologically wherever they go in my albums. I have a work in progress binder album for the layouts in progress, then eventually they get moved to my regular top loading post bound albums when done (when I get around to it).

But now, I don't see me having much to record in a project life way. When I do get out of my slump, and I will, I will make 6x8 layouts of whatever I want. Ill keep at it, just not with cards and pockets. I want to do a little more mixed media I think. Thank you for asking

I'm pretty much all over the place. I store my layouts in albums chronologically, I have a list (well I can loosely refer to it as such) that is pretty much organized, my photos are organized by date but I just don't have a lot of time right now to do a lot of actual scrapbooking. When I do work on a page, it's not in order so whatever strikes my fancy.

I think scrapbooking can be different things. Chronologically it’s more like documenting details or events, or moments.
But storytelling scrapbooking, to me, hits differently. It doesn’t have to include a photo. A photo can illustrate a story, but isn’t integral to the story.
If I’m storytelling to one of my children about themselves, it’s more like I’m writing a letter to them. And then I’ll include a photo that captures the emotions I’m sharing.
If I’m writing about myself, or documenting my childhood memories, that may or may not (likely not) have a photo to illustrate it. But I might have a photo that I took recently that reminded me of a memory, of I’ll use a photo that’s sort of from the same era. I was a wild (shy, introverted, but quite free range) child growing up in the country and spent my summers running through corn fields, jumping from huge towers of hay to another (can’t believe I did that omg 😳), picking alfalfa from the next door field for my pet rabbit… These childhood stories do not have photos, but I can still scrapbook them. They are parts of my history my kids like to know and appreciate having. Probably more so than stuff that’s “easy” and standard scrapbooking fodder, like what was in an Easter basket or whatever.
When I consider if something is worth scrapbooking or documenting through storybooking I ask if it’s something I wish I had from my mom. I’d have liked to have more of my mom’s history from her perspective documented. Like, she made a baby scrapbook listing all guests and gifts she got at her baby shower for me… but? That’s not really meaningful to me. I wish I knew what she was thinking and anticipating. The deeper stuff.

My scrapbooks are for fun. I love taking photos and writing down the stories of my dgk's lives. Occasionally I throw in some pic's and stories of our life here on the farm, or time with friends, or maybe an event with extended family.
I don't see the need to record all the minute of daily life, or even all the important milestones. If I have at least one photo and a story, I will try to get a page together. I try to include something that shows that person's personality or quirks or interests at the time and/or how I feel watching them in these situations.
Most of what I scrap is current, but I don't necessarily scrap it in order. If I am doing birthdays, or school stories from different months/years, I may do several pages related to that theme. But when I put the pages into scrapbooks, they are housed chronologically. My scrapbooks are also divided by seasons, so I will sometimes put in a LO about that season in days gone by. Especially if a current story reminds me of "the way it used to be". I have one full 12x12 scrapbook exclusively about me, and a few mini albums on specific topics. Some of those are based on theme prompts.

I was able to scrap some of those stories in response to gramma 's prompts in 28-4-28. I used some photos I was able to google about my school, and stock photos from the internet and took up most of the page with my writing.

IMHO scrapping chronologically & storytelling are NOT mutually exclusive. I keep my hobby simple, exclusively scrap 12x12, & add various sizes & configurations of page protectors as needed to hold memorabilia, extra photos, short stories, etc. My layouts are story-focused with extensive journaling, sometimes photo-less, & organized chronologically in albums. Hope you find an approach that works well for you!

I'm definitely not chronological. I'll scrap a photo from this month and the next layout I scrap will be from 12 years ago. I print out everything- I have over 16,000 photos printed (may be over 20,000 by now- it has been awhile since I counted.) So I'll just pick a year or a holiday and dig around until I find a photo or set of photos that speak to me. Sometimes I'll decide to use a particular paper line and I'll dig around until I find some photos that go with it. It is a bit chaotic but I scrap for pleasure- my emphasis has not been on storytelling. I notice I'm leaning that way more and more as I get older, though. I used to just pick a photo of the kids looking particularly cute, but now since they are teenagers I'm more eager to tell stories from their childhood- I miss them being little.
I also don't usually put my pages into books, either. I keep my layouts in those 13x13 Iris cases. I have Christmas cases, vacation cases, particular child cases, etc. I enjoy looking at my layouts without the plastic sleeves.
