Backstory: GOP (naturally) lawmakers in Wisconsin are advancing Assembly Bill 562, a bill that would require school boards to notify parents anytime “sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or gender expression” comes up in a test, project, or anything else. It’s just a rabidly bigoted bill, as if the mere existence of LGBTQ people in the curriculum requires a warning for parents.
During a public hearing, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, GOP State Rep. Donna M. Rozar, was asked if parents needed to be notified if a history book mentioned someone like Harvey Milk, the openly gay elected official in San Francisco who was assassinated in 1978.
Unbelievable stupidity on full display. And a demonstration of WHY children should be taught about LGBTQ people in history and now.
I wonder how Donna will feel about schools discussing Buttigieg and his family?
I can hear her now:. "Buttigiteg? Is that a real person?"

I hate ignorance. I hate the rot of human minds by idiotic beliefs. This level of ignorance is making laws all over this country. Any questions as to why were still so held back as a country when we have so much ability and intelligence in other areas?

What happens when a kindergarten student with parents who are lesbians puts up a drawing of his family in his classroom?
What happens when a fourth-grader is asked to do one of those family history projects and talks about how his gay dads adopted him?
Notes home to the parents?
The historical, political, and literary treatment is absolutely revolting, but there are also tons of real kids in real same-sex households who are being told, effectively, "your family is offensive just be existing."

I believe Rozar is 70 so it’s pure ignorance. The murder of Milk was National news at the time.

I believe Rozar is 70 so it’s pure ignorance. The murder of Milk was National news at the time. There was also a movie that won two Academy Awards and a Bafta. She probably just didn’t want to go see a movie about “those people”. If anyone hasn’t seen it, I highly recommend it, but have tissues handy.

What an absolute ASSHOLE. And a LAW-MAKING asshole at that. People need to vote in State Legislative elections and, more importantly, BE INFORMED about the losers who run there.

The fact that she doesn't know who Harvey Milk is supports the argument that the book should be included in regular curriculum. Even though things are still a shitshow here, in Illinois there is state law that requires the teaching of LGBTQ contributions in history.

That is a choice she has made.

That is EXACTLY the message they are sending. Like the Million Mom (really a few thousand) who get upset that the Muppets or Arthur or any children's programming is so audacious as to even MENTION the existence LGBTQ people.

Is there any way out of this mess? education, which is why they are trying to stop it Exactly! And that's why my answer is to STOP FUNDING. Empty the pews. Empty the coffers. Empty the rolls of these hateful organizations that can't stand the very mention of LGBTQ people and families living their lives in peace and happiness. Then, maybe, our state legislators can get busy on decreasing misery instead of increasing it.

Wow! What the fuck. How can she possibly be in a position to be making laws regarding education and not know who Harvey Milk is?! Actually, I believe she is just a disgusting person and knows perfectly well who he is, but is discounting his life because some fucked up God told her to.
I am always horrified by crap like this because I worry that these people will have an LGBTQ kid and destroy them with their toxicity.

Harvey Milk has been gone for a long time. Diane Feinstein was a spring chicken. I was working in San Francisco at the time and Harvey Milk was well known then and still is in the Bay Area even now. Because he is part of the history of San Francisco.
Having said that , in spite of the movies, it unrealistic to expect everyone in this country to know who Harvey Milk was and the roll he played in the LGBTQ community of San Francisco.
All that Harvey Milk accomplished was on the local level. If he hadn’t been gunned down he could have well been the forerunner to Pete Buttigieg as the first openly gay man running for President. So while folks in the Bay Area knows who he is and members of the LGBTQ community know who he is there is no reason to believe “everyone else” should know who he was and what he accomplished, especially since he has been gone for over 40 years.
Throughout this country there are a lot of people who played important rolls in the history of their cities and states and I bet if someone rambled off a list of these individuals names there would be a lot of blank faces.
But, I suspect if you said the “Twinkie defense”…..
Anyway, IMO this person was rude. She had two options if she didn’t know who Harvey Milk was. Keep her mouth shut or politely ask who he was and not asking if he was a real person.

Do you remember all the big headlines in the news from over 40 years ago? And its possible when it made the national news the name the people remembered or focused in on was Mayor George Moscone and not the other guy Harvey Milk. Or even who Harvey Milk was. My guess is the two names people outside of SF and the LGBTQ community were more likely to remember from that day, if they even remember any of it, are George Moscone because he was the mayor and Diane Feinstein for what she did after that day. As far as a movie with a big name star in it, do you know what every movie with a big name star in it is about or even care to know? And finally the Twinkie defense, how many people even know it exists and that it originated when Dan White used it as his defense in his murder trial? Or even who Dan White is and the murders he was being charged with? IMO the belief that all folks who were around in the 1970s, especially those in the position of power, should know who Harvey Milk was and what he accomplished is unrealistic. So I guess we will just have to disagree on this.

I grew up in Oklahoma, lived in Texas at 18 but I know Harvey Milk is a real person. Didn't immediately remember what he was known for; I had to look that up. But I do remember him being in the national news. Someone born shortly before or after 1978 would rightfully have no memory of him. But even then a short google before opening mouth is a possibility these days. edit: OTOH I have no idea is Donna Razor is a fictional or real person. I had to look her up.

I texted 4 friends of the same age who lived in the Midwest and they also remembered. I can understand not coming up with the name if asked a question, but when given his name, it seems incredible that someone of a certain age wouldn’t remember what happened.
