Is it a board game now?
When I played it was a roll playing game. Dice are usually a good bet for the game

Disclaimer: I know nothing about D&D. This response is from my college-aged DS who has some experience with tabletop D&D. I hope that his response helps. If you have additional questions, post them and I'll see if he can answer them for you. If your DD has never played D&D before I would recommend having her start here with the online rules, downloadable character sheets, and a version of the Monster Manual. Also on that page is a way to find D&D events near you, you'll probably be able to find someplace near you that hosts D&D game days and they will probably be able to help you DD get started.
Also, you might want to consider getting her this if she's never played before. Its a starter set that Wizards of the Coast created for people interested in getting started with D&D, but have never played before. It includes premade characters dice, a rulebook, and an adventure book with the quests that the Dungeon Master would use.
If your DD is looking for more advanced content then you can check out these, I would recommend getting her the Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, and Dungeon Master's Guide. These contain pretty much anything one might want to know about how to play D&D.
In addition, there are also board game versions available for purchase that contain pretty much everything one would need to play D&D, this I would recommend for someone who has played before but is not looking for the more advanced stuff just yet.

Mary kay! THANK you. I think she is looking for the board game version, that has everything you need to play..but not advanced. Does he have a recommendation for that? I don't think they have actually played this before..maybe? not not much at all.

We have Dungeon and Lords of Waterdeep. I would suggest Lords of Waterdeep. It is a newer version than the other D&D board games (except for Dungeon) and there is an expansion available for it. I would also suggest getting an extra set or two of dice if they are going to be playing with a larger number of people. -Vicki, who hung up her dice bag when she had kids

Vicki, so you could just buy that game on it's own? it's not an extension of the other D&D games?

Yes. Lords of Waterdeep is its own game, and it is not the RPG.

We actually got Dungeon and Lords of Waterdeep after my kids expressed interest in playing D&D. It was far easier than trying to teach them all the rules and having them need the books of the RPG. But my DS is now old enough that he plays D&D with DH's group.

RPG = Role Playing Game. D&D with the Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, etc.

Vicki, I think that might be too easy for her. She likes the role playing stuff. She's 21.

Dungeon would be too easy. But Lords of Waterdeep would not. My kids grew up learning how to add with D20s (20 sided dice).

Vicki, I think that might be too easy for her. She likes the role playing stuff. She's 21. The RPG requires one person to design the adventure, and then the other players play through it. If she's new to it, she won't be the one designing the game, she'll be one of the players. I would probably get her a nice set of dice and the Players Handbook. The Monsters Manual is fun too, but she can still play without it.

In case I misread (I thought she didn't want the RPG version and wanted one of the board games), there is a starter set you can get. There is a newish version of D&D, 5.0 that is out. It does not have all the books yet that the prior releases had available (DH/DS's group is just moving to 5.0, they have stayed with 3.5 for a long time, as they did not care for 4). But is means that if she wants books, etc that you will need to know which version they are playing, so everyone has the same version of the rules.

I bought the D&D legend of drizzle board game for times when we want to play for a night with people rather than a whole campaign. It is fun. Since it is a board game it just makes some of the decisions for you. I chose that one (randomly) because it is one of the ones available at Barnes and Noble.
FYI: We also own Talisman which is 'D&D like" and we love it! Everyone we have introduced this game to has begged to play again!

I'm guessing if she's asking for D&D for Christmas, then she's not a newbie to gaming I would go with the D&D Board Game, and not look for easier substitutes. Likely, she's tried those already and wants something spesific. I haven't tried this game myself, but Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt is the one ranked highest on Gameboardgeek.com. Seems like it's getting great reveiws.

vspindler - I can still get Talisman at the local game store. I believe they are still rolling out new editions.
