Guys, I can't explain the defeat, horror, disgust.... I have at hearing from the school board candidates. The worst issues facing our schools...mandates from the liberal state to teach our kids gender identity and CRT.
Small town values Parents should be in charge Teachers shouldn't be allowed to teach things we disagree with
And that is just part of it.
Ugh

Ugh. Our school board has many issues, but fortunately far right ideas are not among them.
We could have a long conversation about them taking vendor kickbacks, though.

I think everyone in the country needs to be aware of this happening. It is happening in several districts in my state as well (including our district).

We have 2 spots up for election in November. Most every question is related to CRT, mandates, and parents being in charge. We just had one school make the news because of a horribly racist homecoming proposal, another school starting an online petition to bring back slavery, and earlier an LGBTQIA teacher left their position because the principal would not allow them to hang their pride flag to let people know their class was a safe place for everyone. Oh, and one of the people running for the school board publicly named and shamed a teacher who had received a book grant for her 7th grade classroom. It contained a book, unbeknownst to her, that had a few graphic excerpts that are definitely more 11/12th grade+, also LGBTQIA. The parents are claiming she had pornography and was trying to groom the kids to be homosexual.

Not a school board but NJ has the NJ leader of Oath Keepers, who was at the Capitol Jan 6th running as Republican for our state assembly district 37.. From Jan. 18 to Feb. 16, New Jersey Oath Keeper Edward Durfee made withdrawals from the account almost daily, totaling more than $28,000. Durfee, who is running for office in New Jersey, did not return requests for comment on Thursday (nor did he respond previously, when asked about allegations that Oath Keepers swindled application fees). www.rawstory.com/oath-keepers-stuart-rhodes/

I wish teachers everywhere could just go on strike to put an end to this bullshit. If they want so much control of what their kids learn, they need to homeschool them. Period.

If they want so much control of what their kids learn, they need to homeschool them. Period. They don't want the actual work that goes into lesson planning, delivery, assessments, reporting, etc. They want the teachers to do it, for not-a-lot-thank-you (taxes! you know!), but they want full control of what is taught. Of course, they're used to calling the shots and having it all their own way. That's partly why our country is in turmoil - they finally are not in control of women, minorities, LGBTQ, etc. And they HATE it.

Yikes. I am sorry. The culture wars are alive and well. and the far-right takeover bids are coming from all sides... from the bottom up, as well as from the top-down. I'm so sorry-- horror, defeat, and disgust are not words you should have to be using to discuss a school board candidate's platform.

Yes I am in a rural red county in a blue state. One of our school board candidates is super right wing and his wife homeschools all their kids. He is worried about the same crt, masks and race stuff and has signed a 1776 pledge. Why in the world would you want a homeschooler on the school board? Nothing against homeschoolers but if you don't believe enough in the school system for your children to attend public schools then you shouldn't be on the board making decisions.

3 of the 7 candidates are straight out of tRump playbook: COVID-19 ·Pro parental choice for masks and the vaccine. ·Zero tolerance for discrimination and bullying ·Supporters of medical freedom
Critical Race Theory ·Committed to keeping CRT out of our schools

I'm not sure most people even realize what's happening. Especially if they don't have school age kids. The few people I talked with about this just quoted the bs they read online.

Being a teacher right now is difficult. I am a librarian in a very red state and for Banned Book week I have a mom coming after me for LGBTQ books that are in the Library. It seems that she is particularly after anything that has Trans representation. I am hoping it wont come to this but I am preparing for a challenge. I am tired of the hate and this idea that we are all evil liberal devils that want to harm kids. You want to know why I became a teacher and what I want to do.... I want to teach kids to be educated decent human beings. That's it! I want kids to see themselves in books. I want kids to now that they are loved and supported no matter who they are and that the world is a better place with them in it!
It's very hard! I need copious amounts of chocolate this weekend to get me through.

"Activists are swarming school boards all over the country Conflicts like the ones in North Texas are playing out in cities and towns across the country, amid the rise of at least 165 local and national groups that aim to disrupt lessons on race and gender, according to an NBC News analysis of media reports and organizations’ promotional materials. Reinforced by conservative think tanks, law firms and activist parents, these groups have found allies in families frustrated over COVID-19 restrictions in schools and have weaponized the right’s opposition to critical race theory, turning it into a political rallying point." It's the Tea Party/Death Panels all over again. They were wrong then. They are wrong now. They hate change - especially change that goes against their ridiculous belief system. They have little ability to try to rethink and unlearn the prejudice, fear and hatred they were taught. They just want those things taught to their kids too!

Sounds like the whack jobs are trying to get in at the lowest level of politics, so they can start climbing on up to city councils, then county positions, and up and up.

SNL had their season opener on Saturday. One of the skits was of parents talking at a school board meeting. Having seen enough real people on tv talking at their board meetings the skit didn't seem satirical at all. Too real.
OP, this has to be frightening as well as very frustrating.

I'm so sorry.
Our local union worked our ASSES off to get three public-ed friendly board members re-elected and a fourth candidate off the board (really challenging). It worked. We got rid of the anti-vax, anti-mask science denier and got someone committed to equity (and a former educator) elected, along with the three incumbents we endorsed.
That fourth candidate won by NINE votes.
I hope you have at least some board members/candidates who are at least not terrible. And if they are awful, hopefully your local can ENGAGE with them. Set up meetings or lunches with some of them (smaller groups is better, in accordance with open meetings act).
It's awful that your teachers are dealing with this, and I'm sorry.

Tea party candidates started in school board and city council races, and now look. They seem tame compared to this new crop.

Hawley at his best.... Maybe the Capitol fist bump, nah this is worse. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is the highlight of a new, scathing supercut now circulating on social media. The deeply critical montage was referenced by MSNBC host Chris Hayes on Tuesday, October 5, reports HuffPost. During the segment, Hayes pushed back against the Republican lawmaker's disapproval of the U.S. Department of Justice's efforts to increase surveillance and monitoring of threats made toward school administrative officials and education boards. www.rawstory.com/damning-supercut-blows-up-josh-hawley-s-attempt-to-downplay-far-right-violence-against-school-officials/

Beware, Marjorie Taylor-Greene is now after school boards!! The lawmaker argued that requiring children to wear face masks during a pandemic is "child abuse." They are being abused, brainwashed into wearing masks and God knows what else," she opined. "The parents need to take control of the schools because they're the taxpayers and it's their money that pays for the schools. And so if the parents do not like their children being taught propaganda, communist propaganda or disgusting immoral sexual education or being told that they have to wear a mask when they go to school or anything else then it's the parents right to go into the school board and demand that it stop."Greene insisted that parents could take over schools "without firing a single shot.""Because this government is not meant to be a communist government like China," she asserted. "This government is meant to be a limited government that stays out of people's lives and out of children's education and out of the way of parents."www.rawstory.com/rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-2655238096/

I don't know if any of us are ready to listen to this, but this is up next for me on my podcast listening to-do list. www.nbcnews.com/southlake-podcastSouthlake, Texas, seems to have it all: stately homes, intense civic pride, and above all, terrific schools. So when a video surfaced in 2018 showing Southlake high school students chanting the N-word — and when Black residents came forward to share stories of racist harassment and bullying — the school board vowed to make changes. But the unveiling of a Cultural Competence Action Plan set off a backlash that’s consumed Southlake, fueled by a growing national crusade against critical race theory. Hosted by NBC News national reporter Mike Hixenbaugh (host of the hit podcast “Do No Harm”) and NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton, “Southlake” tells the story of how this idyllic city, and its local school board election, became the poster child for a new political strategy with national repercussions.

I'm currently teaching a unit on the Civil rights movement in a rural district. Each time I teach it, I get to one or two kids. I guess that is all I can hope for.

I'm two episodes in - so far it is all stuff that has been covered in local articles over the last few years but I plan to keep listening.
