With the holidays approaching and the crazy shopping upon us can I ask one thing? Please just be nice and patient. To everyone, from the retail store clerks to other customers to drivers, etc. We are all stressed and doing the best we can. A little compassion goes a long way this time of year. Yelling and screaming won't make something in stock or honestly make me want to go out of my way to help you. We are all humans just trying to get through life. Take a deep breath and try to enjoy it.

As my grandpa always said and I try to live by it..."Kindness is cheap...costs nothing".

Yep. We made a point of being extra kind to our very stressed out waitress last night. The table next to us felt entitled to leave without paying because she didn't pick up their credit card fast enough ... well the place was packed and she was absolutely slammed and working her tail off. We were very patient and she thanked us several times. Food was excellent even though it was a little slow. We left her a nice big tip, too.

Good reminder!
And don't forget a smile just might make someone's day. Nearly everyone looks better when they smile instead of scowl. And it's free, too!

yes please.
I know my son is already working long hours - we were shopping at his place of employment yesterday and one of the higher managers spotted him and said "go home, change and come back"...he wasn't due in until noon - this was about 9-ish. I finished my shopping quickly, we went home and he was at work by 10. He didn't off until 9 last night and was back in at 6am - I don't expect him to be home for dinner. His last day off was Tuesday - his next is Wednesday but there's a good chance that he'll be called in

Good reminder. I'm pretty easy going, but I always seem to have at least one meltdown during the season when I least expect it. I try and calm down and apologize immediately.

I was always a promoter of every person having to do one day of retail or restaurant customer service. That would doubly apply for phone reps. People can't see you, so they probably feel more able to yell at you. When I had a long line out to the back of the store I'd try and get people to sing or play games. I would have been in huge trouble had anyone from corporate walked in, but it's the holidays. Don't scream. Sing. Wishing you a calm holiday work season, Scrappower and everyone else who works w/the public. The person at the register or on the phone doesn't make the rules and retailers are strict about their rules. Don't blame someone who is trying to be friendly despite their limitations.

This time of year that should be a fun time, is more a stressful time. So it does seem like people are at their worst this time of year. We notice that when we get a warm day in April or May, everyone has a smile on their face and are friendly and helpful. I notice a huge difference between the way people behave this time of year and the way they behave in nice spring weather!
Great reminder! The roads are so scary this time of year, and not just because of the weather.

Agree, but a reminder to UPS delivery drivers. Take a few small seconds to not throw packages on people's front steps. I heard the loud thud of my ceiling fan being thrown on my front steps and I was in the basement! So please try and do the best that you can. I DO NOT THINK ALL UPS DRIVERS SUCK.

That sucks. You should complain to ups. They can't fix it unless they know of the issue. My ups driver is great. I am lucky.

They should print this and post it on doors to retail establishments everywhere!

This mostly serves as a reminder to me that we are about to enter the season where I do not want to set foot inside anything retail. But if I do, I will be nice. There really isn't any item that is worth being nasty over.

My daughter worked in fast food the last two Christmases, and received the most appalling abuse. My son ( 6ft 2 and muscly) works in a bakery at the moment, and has noticed that the women get nastiness and abuse but never him! He laughs and says it's his 'charm' but really it seems that people pick on and get nasty with those they feel they can get away with it. My daughter was spat at because a colleague got someone's burger order wrong on Christmas Eve last year- who does that?'
I honestly haven't seen any altercations in a shop. I can't understand why any 'thing' is worth being rude to someone!

@scrappower, I recently had to call GoDaddy tech support and was on hold as usual, but when the guy came on the line, he took me by complete surprise by singing his intro. He had made up a little short intro song and it was absolutely hilarious.
When I call, I don't get impatient because I know I'll have to wait, but he told me that he does it because it's unexpected, fun, and it will diffuse an irate/frustrated customer. He told me it works 100% of the time.
A little humor goes a long way on both sides.
I always think that could be me on the other end and try to treat the person accordingly.

Too bad charges can't be made against people like that like they do people that drive off without paying for gas. Glad your waitress had you for a customer to make her evening more bearable.
