Happy Tuesday! I will be your host today and the next 3 Tuesdays. We are going to play with cardstock, and for the twist, we will be heat embossing. If you do not have embossing powder, I have alternative ideas and a sample so I hope you will play along. Today we'll start with Pleating, it's such a simple technique, but it can elevate a card with the dimension it creates. I used a score board, but you can use your trimmer and a stylus. I started off with a bigger piece of cardstock than I needed. I scored A side every 1/2 " and than I flipped it to the B side and scored at 1/4" first and than every 1/2". When you are done scoring, pleat your cardstock. I started in the middle, its easier that way for me. You can add this piece behind on an opening or unfold/smooth it out and hand draw, or trace a shape on the paper and cut it out. CARDtober 2021 by Azcrafty, on Flickr My twist is to use heat embossing powder. By adding multiple layers of powder to a die cut, you can create a faux metallic look. Just smoosh some embossing ink on your die cut and dip it into the embossing powder and heat set it. Before it cools just dip it back in the powder and heat set it again. You can repeat this 3-4 times and the result is beautiful. If you are using metallic powder it will look like a metal accent and if you are using colored powder it will look like an enamel piece. If you don't have embossing powder just use a metallic ephemera, sticker or die cut a shape out of metallic cardstock. This one with embossing powder. Your samples are so beautiful and elegant, and this is a really great challenge.
I’ve started mine, but have to run an errand before I can do the heat embossing and mount it to a card.
I found it easier to die cut my shape after scoring, then do the pleating last, probably because there was less pleating to do that way. The more pleats, the more difficult it was for me to do the folds.

Those cards are beautiful! I love the elegant gold filigree look of the leaves with the bold green folded pieces.

Love your Christmas 🎄, great way to use this technique 👏. Thank you for playing and sharing.

jjpeapea, your card is lovely! azcrafty, between the pleating and multiple heat embossing, this challenge turned out to be more challenging than I expected. I used to do a lot of heat embossing. Key word is “used to,” and I guess I’m either a bit rusty, or my embossing powders have deteriorated over the years. They are really, really old. Also, my embossing ink pad had gone really weird. I pressed my die cut into the ink (which was still good), and the impression seems to be permanent now and the inkpad is probably useless for future projects. Apparently I need a new pad. The foam refuses to spring back. I did multiple layers of embossing for the sentiment, too, but I used a regular ink rather than the embossing ink. It’s not as juicy as the embossing ink, and the result was still a bit disappointing. It’s not my best work, but here is my card:

I'm sorry that you had so much trouble scrapnnana. Your 3x heat embossed element is gorgeous, looks like a painted wrought iron filigree. You can use glycerin to heat emboss too, just add a thin layer on the piece so the powder sticks to it. Love your red shape and it's perfect for a Christmas card, is that a die cut or hand drawn? Thank you for playing and sharing!

It’s a die cut shape. And I didn’t know about the glycerin, so I appreciate the tip. I may still just pick up another embossing ink pad, though. I was surprised at how well the embossing ink had lasted and not dried out. It would have been fine if the sponge hadn’t deteriorated, but it was very old, and a different type of pad than my other ink pads (which normally just dry out).

My goal is to make Christmas cards from as many of the Cardtober challenges as I can. This one was fun because I made my own die cut . . . on my Brother Scan n Cut Canvas software. Welded a bunch of triangles together, added a trunk and a star on top. I am amazed at how cool the Sentiment die cut with the embossing looks over the tree!

This is so cool angel97701. I love that you created the cut file and the sentiment looks really cool. I own the scanncut but never tried to make a cut file before. Thank you for sharing your beautiful creation.

Loving the pleated Christmas cards! Really want to lift that tree idea, angel97701 and jjpeapea. And scrapnnana, your pleated ornament is perfect!
Not sure if this counts, azcrafty , but I pleated vellum. And then used my Minc to do foiling for the metallic element. CARDtober #5 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

I haven’t tried this yet but I’m curious what the inside of these pleated cards looks like. Are you putting something on the back to hide the attached pleating? Does that make sense? The fronts of the card look beautiful, but I’m stuck on what to do to “cover” the inside.

ComplicatedLady I didn't hide my pleats. You can see the edge of the pleated paper if you look at the card sideways. I kind of liked it that way, that the recipient would see the depth and layers. But I'm curious what other cardmakers did.

scrapnnana very cute! Your tree background paper is cute and your embellishment looks great with the triple embossing. It really did gain a metallic element look. angel97701 - great minds thinking alike! I love yours with the edging, pleated trunk, stitching all around, extra dots. I like how your sentiment looks with the triple embossing. grammadee the pleated vellum, vellum circle, Minc foiling and your foil paper behind make your card look so very very special. I love it.

If your cut out shape is smaller you can add doubled up foam tape at the edge and hide the pleats. Mine only has it at the two longer sides. flic.kr/p/2mzd13o

azcrafty, thanks for the challenge this week. It made me try 2 things I haven't done before; pleating and triple heat embossing. My first try was a bit gobby, but I got better with a bigger piece to emboss. Thanks for challenging me. You have love in the gallery. jjpeapea, what a perfect idea for using the pleated technique. That Christmas tree is wonderful. The gold star, gold sentiment and gold background are all so pretty together. Beautiful job on this challenge. scrapnnana, I love your ornament against the background of pine trees. The pleating makes it stand out so well and the gold embossed emblem in the center is beautiful. I think your sentiment looks great. I love the font on it. Another great card. angel97701, great Christmas card. You have love in the gallery. grammadee, I love your foiling. You have love in the gallery. Here is mine: I used the left over scraps to make another card while I had everything on my desk. Pleated background thank you card

nylene your card is beautiful and love how you used the same pp to do the pleating and the background layer for the card. I hope you enjoyed the challenge and can see yourself use some of this techniques.

nylene your pleated card looks amazing. I bet you are liking the technique. Gold on purple always looks regal to me. I'm liking how the pleats go top to bottom and you can see the pattern a bit.

nylene, your card is stunning! Using the same paper for a background, then having the gold filigree leaf cluster centered on top really make your pleating stand out.
