I’ve added a link to a tutorial at the end of this post. It's my turn to be hostess again, and I'm doing another "'outside the box" challenge with an interactive element. Your challenge is to create either a shaped shaker card, or a shaped card with a shaker. Please do NOT use a rectangle or square for either the shaker element, or the card unless you absolutely have no way to create a shaped shaker. Queen & Co. fans will find this an easy challenge, but there are other options. Many companies make shaker dies and coordinating shaker parts (My Favorite Things is one), but this challenge is not limited to those who have specialty dies. Shaker cards were originally just rectangle or square square shaped cards with rectangle or square shakers that were made using foam tape. Now shaped shaker dies and accessories are available, but even if you don't have those, you can make a shaped shaker card using nesting dies or an electronic cutter. Below are 4 different cards I made as samples. Each one opens like a traditional card, where you can stamp a sentiment or write a note. The top left shaker was made with the Queen & Co. Pumpkin Shaped Shaker kit. They even provide the right size of envelope. However, I noticed recently that most of their shaped shaker kits and replacement parts are out of stock, including for the pumpkin. This is when you can use fun foam in a pinch. I'll post a video later today or tomorrow on how to do that. Fun foam can easily stretch out of shape, but there is a way to prevent that. Note: I can’t take credit for the idea of using the pumpkin shaker kit for making Cinderella’s coach. I saw someone else’s Cinderella coach card. However, I wasn’t able to find it again, so I did my own version. I used Spellbinder dies for the decorative parts. My mistake was gluing a Disney Cinderella die cut to the coach. Now the card won’t fit the envelope, so I’ll need to figure out a way to make one. Another option is to cut several of your shaker frame from card stock and glue the layers together in a stack. You’ll need acetate for the cover piece, no matter how you make the shaker. If you have leftover plastic from packaging, it can be used for this. The simpler upper right shaped card was made with nesting dies, including the flower base. I folded white card stock, placed the die so that one edge of the die was positioned just above/beyond the fold, and then ran it through my machine. I cut a single layer for the flower overlay, and I made the shaker with fun foam and circle dies. If you have nesting dies, you can make a shaped shaker. The lower right bat card was made with my Cameo 3 and a bat file from the Silhouette Design Store, which I adapted, but I used the same circle dies for creating the shaker tummy. You can cut fun foam with a Cameo, so I assume you can also cut it with a Cricut Explore. You’ll need the deep cut blade. The twist for this challenge is to stamp and color (or print) a coordinating design, image, or phrase on your envelope. For those who find this challenge a bit overwhelming, here is a link to a step by step written tutorial with photos. I was hoping to do a video tutorial, but family needs have delayed that. I hope this will help for now, though: Tutorial for a basic shaped shaker

This is definitely out of the box for me. I'll have to give this some thought but will probably use circular or oval nesting dies and fun foam. I might have to have a shaker card day to catch up on your two challenges so far. I have another type of shaker I want to try for a Nov 1 birthday so I better get to it!

Those look really fun, scrapnnana! I have the Elizabeth Craft jar dies that I have used for one shaker card. Just had an idea for how I could use that set for a holiday card. I am finding the double side adhesive foam from Scrapbook.com handy for shaker cards. It can be die cut very easily.

That is a great suggestion, and perhaps those with a Xyron sticker machine could add adhesive to fun foam. I appreciate the compliments, but I also hope that I haven’t made the challenge a bit too overwhelming and challenging. I promise that my future challenges will be a lot easier.

Thank you for the shaker card challenge scrapnnana . Shaker cards are so pretty and so special. Yours are so lovely and fun, especially the Cinderella one. I know some little girls and maybe some big ones that would squeal with glee if they received that card. My friend gave me these Close to My Heart star shaker makers.

Lovely card jjpeapea ! Did you use gold flakes in your shaker mix? Its beautiful 😍. This was not easy for me scrapnnana I really had to think out side the box...literally 😆 no rectangle or square. I built the shaker element by die cutting the die 6 times and glued them together and decided to use beads. The hard part was the plastic sheet, needed to fussy cut it...not fun! I die cut the card base with a circle die and cut out 1 inch square pieces to create the rays of the sun. Little ink blending and white gel pen to make it pop. Than I had a hard time finding my square envelopes so I just cut a 5x7 one down to fit my card, than stamped it with a paper pumpkin kit stamp. CARDtober 2021 by Azcrafty, on Flickr

scrapnnana, your shaker cards are wonderful. That Cinderella’s coach is adorable and will be loved by some little girl. Your cards are always so professional. You are amazing. Thank you for the challenge. I have only made one other shaker card and it was a disaster. I think my problem is that I have never bought any “shaker mix” and tried to use beads, sequins and glitter in mine. Even though I used my static guard on the acetate, the glitter sticks to the front. I’m pretending that it’s snow on the window. LOL. It won’t bother my grands when I send the card to them. Shaker snow globejjpeapea, what a beautiful Christmas card. That star is perfect for a shaker and your envelope is a great match. I love the rich blue color of your card against your gold foil sentiment. Lovely. azcrafty, your shaker rainbows are amazing. I have decided that you are an over-achiever, your cards are always so perfect. I love seeing every card you make. Have you been a card maker for a long time?

Nylene, it’s lovely, and the glitter on the acetate does just look like snow.
I use an unused Bounce dryer sheet to eliminate the static. I just gently wipe the acetate with it. I sometimes still get a little static cling, such as with sequins, glitter, and micro beads, but not very much. Most shaker fillings stick to the acetate unless you “treat” the acetate. Some people huff on their acetate, and the slight moisture seems to eliminate the static. I always wonder if that will result in a moldy card eventually, for those who keep them a long time, so I stick with my Bounce sheet.

Thanks, scrapnnana, I used the little Stampin Up embossing buddy but I will try a dryer sheet. I really need to invest in some of the "shaker fillers". Do you have a place you like to buy them. If I had them I would probably try more shaker cards.

nylene lol 😆 you are so funny. I have been a card maker for 16 years or so, on and off. I did take a huge brake from it and when I found this site I got inspired and picked it up again. I'm a technique junkie and love to try new stuff, probably that's why I have a full craftroom. Love your snowglobe shaker card and I think the sticking glitter is perfect for this card. I heard that people put their shaker mix on a Bounce sheet and rub it. I haven't tried it yet.

If I had them I would probably try more shaker cards. I have found some at Michaels, some at Hobby Lobby, some at Queen & Co., and some on Amazon. Queen & Co. have the most variety, and they have shaker dies, kits, etc., that are really cute and fun. Also, as azcrafty mentioned, it can help to stick the dryer sheet into the mix. I’ve often done that, too. I got a lot of the little plastic jars at Tuesday Morning when they had them, although the big box hobby stores usually carry them, too. I put my mix into a small, shallow jar, then stir it with a folded box sheet before adding it to my shaker, especially if I am using more static prone fillings. I still wipe the acetate with the Bounce sheet, though, no matter what. I tend to avoid using glitter, but micro beads and other small beads have just as much static. They roll around nicely inside a shaker, though, so I use them, anyway.

This is a small 4x4 gift tag card that I am using on a birthday gift later this month. If will hold a gift card attach to a wrapped recipe book for a close friend. I made an envelope to go with it and after i took the photo, I realized it’s upside down, but it has a matching flower like the blue one on the front of the card. The colors in the photo doesn’t quite do it justice— the card is deep pink, not red and the sequin flowers are pink, not purple.

katiekaty, your flower card is wonderful. Your recipient will love all the colors in your shaker center. Isn't it irritating when the photo or scan doesn't show the correct colors? I know it is beautiful in person. Nice job! iowagirl50147, oh no, how did it break your Big Shot? I broke my Cuddlebug and replaced it with a Big Shot that I thought was indestructible. I don't have the electric one. Tell us what happened. Your mitten with the pearls and shaker full of snowflakes is an amazing card. So cute.

Your mitten with the pearls and shaker full of snowflakes is an amazing card. So cute. nylene--I too replaced my Cuddlebug with a Big Shot too! Not because it broke, but because I could no longer get plates for it and my local scrapbook store had a really good deal. Plus, I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I was cutting through 2 layers of cardstock, there was a click, and a really loud pop/bang and no pressure to cut. I am not happy at all, this machine was less than 2 years old!! I contacted my local scrapbook store who referred me to Sizzix. "One year warranty" is all I got from Sizzix. (Their customer service was awful!) Wham, bam, thank you ma'am!! I feel like a picked the wrong door on "Lets Make a Deal"! I'm back to my Cuddlebug that is probably close to 10 years old and still going. It must be a Timex!!!

azcrafty, I LOVE the rainbow shaker. Getting those little balls in the right channels? Your card turned out so fun and so great. Someone will "Be Happy" to get such a cheerful card. nylene I'm a big snowglobe fan. They just seem special. Yours is so pretty. Good choice! katiekaty so pretty and I like your out of the ordinary sequins. Your friend will feel so special getting the recipe book and this special tag with it. iowagirl50147 sorry to hear about your Big Shot. I just got a manual die cutter last month. Up until then I felt it wasn't justified because I have an electronic one BUT I have used it a lot and I like the edges and the ability to do teeny tiny things easily. Your mitten card is so warm and adorable, and your card has so many nice elements, like the textured cuff and the pearl pattern. I especially like your snowflake sequins, how appropriate.
