Hello,
I recently learned about foiling and I'm ready to jump in with both feet! I've heard a lot about Heidi Swapp's mini minc laminator, unfortunately I can't find it. Is it discontinued (my google search is coming up empty)? Is there another laminator that is on the market that gets the same results?

I've been using just a cheap-o laminator I got off Amazon and it works pretty well. Here's the one I got: Royal Sovereign Laminator

Quite a few people have done comparison videos with different types of laminators vs the minc on YT - here's a quick place to start www.youtube.com/results?search_query=minc+vs+laminatorThe crafter I watch who does the most foiling, Justine Hovey, seems to use the Royal Sovereign laminator and has great results. She was crafting on a tight budget and didn't have access to a lot of branded supplies but I don't think she ever upgraded to a minc after she got on all the DTs. I think most of the laminators work fine but work better the long they heat up, so doing a longer craft session or doing the less fine detailed stuff at the beginning might be a good plan. I think I've heard people talk about some with 2 heat settings and the hotter one being better...? It's always a trade-off for me whether to buy a cheaper tool knowing that I might only be passionate about foiling for a few weeks vs getting the best one so I get the best results and don't get discouraged (which might be why I don't keep doing the new technique). I had trouble getting toner based things to work with, plans to use the office printer didn't work out, so the laminator I borrowed from the office didn't really see much action before I decided it was all too hard. I have some foils left, I should buy some of the toner printer things and use them up!

Dickblick.com has the mini minc for $65. I think it’s worth the cost if you plan to do a lot of foiling. I’ve had 2 of the Royal Sovereign ones, I killed the first one so I bought another. Only used the second one a few times and now it won’t get hot. I’m seriously considering buying another minc just to have in case something happens to mine.

I'm very interested in toner foiling and I hot foil already, my question is, if you don't have access to a laser printer where can I get the "toner cards" I hear about on various videos?

You got me motivated to use my foil which has been sitting in the drawer for a few years, so I got some Foil Mates pre-printed cards and ran it all through my swingline laminator. It worked but the plastic sheets of the foil were wrinkling, so the results were less than perfect. Does anyone know if that was because I used the hotter setting on my laminator? It was smooth when I sent it through and the parchment was smooth. It seemed like the heat was buckling the foil/plastic.
I had always heard that hotter was better with foiling and all the googling I did pulled up irrelevant stuff so besides experimenting with more foil and the lower setting I don't know. I was able to make a bunch of cards anyway - perfection is overrated, right?

If you feed it in with the open side going in, your foil and/or cardstock might wrinkle. You could also try adding an extra piece of thin cardstock behind the piece you're foiling for extra stability.

Thanks for the suggestion!
