Following Pea advice I found a Deva Curl salon. I was specific with who I wanted to cut my hair with the receptionist. She assured me they were all experienced, but I insisted on choosing a stylist with experience. Of course I yelped and google stalked this salon and stylist before going in. Nothing bad is written about this woman! She's like 6 stars! Wahoo!
I go, we do the consultation for cut and color. I show her what I want (wavy, just above shoulder cut) and she says, "No, curly hair. You look like mother. You want look like mother?" I replied, "My hair is curly. I don't want to fight it any more." Her: "I cut. You love it. No looking like mother."
So we go off to color and she brings in her assistant. Neither are tall. I am. They literally can't reach the top of my head to color. I'm thinking no way in heck this is happening! I'm basically slouched where I'm almost out of the chair. Color is fine- wish my gray was better covered but it'll do.
Go to get it cut. She calls back the assistant to blow it out. OMG- most amazing blow out ever. But she is tiny and I'm slumped again.
And the cut is perfect for my straight hair. Looks great! She did a good job and I don't look like my mother. My back spasm has finally stopped.
I really am laughing. It is the best haircut I've gotten in 3 years. It isn't what I wanted but maybe that is a good thing. I felt like a giant. Culturally, these two come from stereotypically short places, both were English as a second language speakers and them saying "too tall, too tall" in their accents cracked me up.
And while I didn't get what I wanted and was too big for their services, I'd still give 6 stars. LOL!

I'm so glad that you like your cut. Unless your grey hair is very wiry, I expect that the colour issue is because it's demi permanent or not left on long enough? I have a shock of hair that lost pigment after my stroke, and it doesn't take colour correctly. Leaving the colour on longer is the key--the hair isn't white, it just looks like something in my hair from afar, and up close it looks like really fine baby hair--it's there, but not very noticeable. All my stylists have said it's really strange. The hair area is right above the dead spot in my brain.
Maybe you could bring in a plastic milk crate for them or figure something else out. I wouldn't be able to slouch in a chair forever, even for the best stylist in the world!
I'm so glad you love her! The right cut makes all the difference. My hair is fine as frog's hair, and my mom insisted on perming it. Then when I moved away from school and started going to a salon, my hair finally looked amazing! I do keep it coloured because of that weird hair, but the colour is also a great way to add more body. My hair was so healthy that it wouldn't do anything--even curl.

I don't understand weren't you sitting when they styled your hair? I've had a short stylist and she's still much taller than me when I'm sitting. Does your stylist not know how to lower the chair because salon chairs go up and down.

That is too funny. So even though you "didn't get the you wanted" and are "too big for their services" are you going back? It really is hard to find a good stylist.

We want pictures!!! I'm glad you have a great sense of humor. I second the pictures request- we want to see the hairdo and a candid of the two stylists. Take some pics the next time you go? To be fair though, you described it very well- we can almost picture the interaction.

Does your stylist not know how to lower the chair because salon chairs go up and down. I'm tall - not super tall, but taller than average - and sometimes if a stylist is shorter than average it doesn't matter how low the chair goes. Sometimes you have to slouch to make it work. I'm glad you got a cut you loved! Great story!

As a tall person, you know you are in trouble when the stylist hits the lever on the chair and you go nowhere. You can't go any lower. I'm 6 feet tall. The stylist was 5'1 with heels. The assistant was smaller and she was wearing Danskos! Sometimes being tall is exactly like Alice in wonderland. You are just to big for the space. I've been tall all my life, I've heard the thud of the chair not moving a lot of times. It was the juxtaposition of my height vs. theirs this time that cracked me up. Wish I had thought to take pictures of the blow out!

I'm tall too, 5'9. And sometimes you really do feel like a giant when everyone else is shorter than average. Glad you like your hair!

But.. The question is, do you feel like you can maintain this straight style? Seems like of you have curly hair that it will take a lot of effort.
Also, if I took the time to specifically go to a salon that specializes in curl and was told I would look old and to get the opposite of what I came for I would be pissed. You could go get a blowout in any salon.

I'm so confused. Isn't the point of a Deva Curl salon to get a good haircut that works with curly hair? But they gave you a straight 'do? I wish I could find a Deva Salon near me, but I live in the middle of nowhere.

I'm slow; now I get it! feel like I have similar experiences whenever I get my nails done. I always end up with something I don't want because I give up on trying to communicate with them. So does your new do look good when you let it go curly too?

No worries. I really did think the whole thing was funny though in case anybody is confused. I mean, come on. I paid $150 for something I didn't want, was offended, made to feel like a giant AND it still was worth it?!?! How can that not be funny?
I do not think it is a great cut for curly. It really does look nice straight and the cut did make it easier to wear it straight. It is harder to "plop" it for some reason. It doesn't look horrible curly, it just looks better straight.
