You mean they don’t automatically come down to Florida? Could have fooled me. Our state is crammed with people who retire from other places, about a third of whom are griping about how it’s not like back home. They should avail themselves of one of our excess one-way U-hauls so that the rest of you will have something to haul your stuff in.

She and her husband used to spend the winters Nov to March, in a condo in Destin. They loved it, raved about it, decided to move there permanently from WI. Now they regret the move but won't admit it. Turns out living on the beach is a hell of a lot more fun than living 50 miles inland. They are miserable from May to September. Her husband is a VA and the number of veterans down there means he waits months longer for treatment than when in WI.

I would advise against the motor home, unless you get a small sized one. My sister had the huge size (like a bus) and the gasoline was so expensive they only took 2 significant trips in the 15-20 years she owned it. Jimmy Kimmel recently bought one and even he was complaining about how expensive it was to fill the gas tank. Perhaps they are just not motorhome people to begin with. My dad bought his first large 5th wheel the summer he retired and now spends January to April in the Southwest. His current rig is 42 feet long and requires a special truck to haul it. Gassing up the truck costs about $300 at the moment. They've been doing this for 18 years, whether gas is $1.60 a gallon or $4.29 a gallon. Sounds to me like your sister isn't meant for the RV lifestyle.

Most people I know simply retire in the same state/town they've been in.
One set of aunt/uncle bought land on the Oregon coast and retired there after living in Oregon for nearly 40 years.
Another set retired completely a couple of years ago. They were all set to basically winter in a RV going between two kids' houses in CO and AZ when my aunt started having double vision and persistent headaches. Scan revealed a tumor. She had surgery last month and is going through rehab now. Their winter plans are on hold for now. If it works out, they're talking about permanently retiring near one of the two sons, leaving their daughter alone here.
Dad is talking about becoming a snowbird. Ugh. A lot of his friends do it so he's thinking about it now that he's a widower. He's starting with a month first. He would have to downsize if he did that. The way he's been clearing out the basement tells me he might actually do it.
Lower taxes, no tax on retirement income, more senior friendly communities are all reasons I hear out of the older people.

For us we will stay in Ca. We have to be in a state that offers good adult programs for disabled and great medical care for medically complex adults.
Our ds needs great all around care. Ca offers that.

Our state is crammed with people who retire from other places, about a third of whom are griping about how it’s not like back home. They should avail themselves of one of our excess one-way U-hauls so that the rest of you will have something to haul your stuff in. I'm assuming that you're FL-born, in which case I wholeheartedly apologize for being one of the many people from other States/Countries who move down here for retirement. I blame DH, as this was *his* dream; not mine. No matter where I came from previously, it would seem like heaven because I had my entire core family there, as well as extended family and friends. I had things that you can't just replace by picking up and moving to another State/Country, IMO.
In our minds, we thought that we'd travel back often to see everyone we missed, but that only happened a handful of times due to illness with both of us.
Most people that we've met who moved down here from other States, LOVE it. It's definitely a good fit for them. I don't hear complaining (only from my mouth!!!). I have to say that in the 10 years that we're here, it's gotten SO housing-packed, roads are now getting set to be expanded, housing prices and even rentals have gone up in price so very much, and it's taken away from what brought so many people down here.
Even if we had that U-haul that you mention, we could never afford to have continued to live in NY/NJ, which is why we moved down here........... Now it's getting so expensive down here that I cannot imagine where it is affordable anymore!
I'm sorry that so many people moved into your home State and polluted it more, made it more crowded, and changed it immensely. I came from a Town that had most people stay and live in their homes that they meticulously chose, for their entire lives. That would have been my choice. The Town and area that I lived in still hasn't changed and I'd give anything to be able to move right back in there........ (That'll never happen!).
Sorry again, if I personally complained and offended you as a Flo-Grown individual! (I DO love your sticky frogs, your anoles, and a few other things......... but the heat/humidity actually makes my chronic pain SO much worse, so it's not for me.)

Ca offers that. Gee, sounds PERFECT for me and for my disabled DD33!!! Once you are disabled, it's SO important to chose wisely if you move!!!!!!!!!!!! Live & learn!! DD has basically no help or hope in FL, at all!!! Her SS disability case got denied twice by crappy lawyers down here. She has no health insurance, etc........... There's no expanded Medicare here, and the State offers pretty much nothing. Bad choice!
As for my disability, I chose wrongly also. My wonderful (specific) surgeons were back in NYC; not in FL. It took years to even find a surgeon who was capable of taking my medical case, and she was great but I'm left with a permanent eyepatch until I could again find exceptional eye surgeons. Live & learn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll also add that almost everyone I know personally has just stayed where they are in CA when they retired. The only people I can think of who made big moves - I have 2 aunts who both retired (with their spouses) to Oregon near Bend. One moved from The Woodlands and one moved from Los Angeles.

It is hard to move away from CA and then come back. It is also a large state so you can find different things depending which part you go to. My DH's family has alternated between Nor Cal and So Cal for many generations. We have many years before retirement but it will first depending on finances and then family. I grew up military and never lived near extended family. I've so enjoyed raising my own kids with both sides of our families near by and would like to stay near the next generation. But that's up to them and where they end up settling. In general, beyond CA as a whole, DH and I would be interested in CO,OR and WA.
