I have a basic white IKEA desk top on drawer units. Thought I might like to protect it with a glass top. When I called to get a quote it would be more than I paid for the desk lol! I will call for some more quotes but presuming it will still be fairly expensive.
I do have a large 2’ x 3’ green cutting mat but while useful, it’s not attractive. I usually have my pink WRMK magnetic mat on top of that.
What, if anything, do you use to protect your desk top?

I have two of the old Making Memories black with white grid self-healing mats, and then I pull out the travel sized Tim Holtz glass mat for messy stuff

I also have the ugly green cutting mat. Most often I use my Ranger non-stick craft mat, even when I'm not doing anything messy. I've had it for years, but it certainly isn't a very pretty option

I have a roll of news print that I use to protect my desk top from paint, ink, spray and it lets me write quotes or notes to myself as well. I just roll out how much I need, cut it and place it over top (and tuck it under the hutch to it stays put). I then have the heidi swapp make it pretty silicon mat to work on over top.

I have the Tim Holtz glass mat, and then on top of that I have a Stampin' Up! grid paper pad. I do almost everything on top of that. It is 16 inches wide and 12 inches tall and it's very handy for working on because when it gets dirty I just rip off the top paper and throw it out. I can use a piece of paper for at least a month, though, unless I'm doing something particularly messy. If I'm doing a ton of ink blending I will do that right on the glass mat and then do the rest of the work on the paper pad.
It's also handy for jotting down measurements and notes if I'm watching tutorials, etc online while I craft, and it's a good cushion for stamping.

I have the 18"x24" WRMK teal cutting mat ( here on SB.com). I like a brighter work surface, so on top of that I have the bubblegum pink AC cutting mat that's just a smidge smaller than the WRMK one. When the AC pink mats were at Tuesday Morning a few years ago, I bought a three of them because I assumed the ruler marks would wear off eventually. The AC one is still going strong! I keep the extras sitting under my heavy duty trimmer.

A glass top would be so nice, bummer they are expensive because I love that idea. I have the white Ikea desk stuff too in the Alex line. The laminate is starting to peel a bit at the corners which is bothering me. It's funny, when I bought it, I loved it all. Now, several years later, I'm not sure I'm loving the look as much. I can't tell if I'm just sick of it or board or what, but investing in nicer stuff seems silly when it's likely I'll just mess it up with ink and glue.

I have a glass top and yes, it was expensive but IMHO the beat choice for me. I’ve had it 6 years and it looks amazing. I get paint on it and it comes right off. Same with glue. I have no regrets with the $$ I paid for my glass top.

I have 3 main work stations; one is a 30"X40" glass top light table. As it wears and gets too many knife cuts, I simply swap it around, when that gets used too much, I flip it to the other side for 2 more uses. The other 2 have cutting mats, one is for fixed blade the other is rolling blade only.
For a small work space, like crops, or expo's I just take my Scor-Pal and Scor-Mat. The mat has a gridded fixed blade side for cutting and the silicone side for painting, gluing, and other messy work, and easy clean-up.

my scrapbook table is just a 6ft folding table (banquet table) - I don't use anything on top of it, just give it a wipe down when it needs it

I have an ugly green mat, and my tim holtz glass mat is on top of it because it slides less. I love my glass surface. I would be tempted to purchase a bigger glass surface, but they get unaffordable very quickly with size.

I couldn't bring myself to pay for the TH glass mat. Instead I found a tempered glass kitchen mat at a thrift store. It's perfect. It's smooth on one side, and because it's tempered, I can cut on it. It doesn't cover my whole table surface, but it's big enough for what I need. Close enough to the TH for just $3.

You might laugh, but I use cheapo padded-vinyl placemats from the dollar store. I buy several at a time, so I can just throw them out when they get too worn out. For cutting, I just put my self-healing cutting mat on top of the placemat, but I move it for gluing/adhering little bits, painting, inking/stamping, etc.

I keep packaging to use as a mat for messy stuff. The card stock envelopes my photos come in, shipping envelopes, excess backer card stock from other supplies, etc. If they’re bulky I’ll cut the edges off to separate into two pieces, or peel apart the seems. I use them until they’re too messy or sticky and then toss in the recycle bin.

I have an old farm table that I got at the thrift store for $50.00. I don't put anything on top of it unless I'm going to use my exacto knife or a glue stick. Otherwise I just use the surface as it. It's already old and scratched up. That's why I bought it! To be clear, however, I rarely blend inks or use paints or anything that makes a mess.

I use a vintage timber desk and work straight on the desk surface unless I'm doing inky messy stuff, in which case I pull out either the ranger craft mat, or some plastic packaging. I keep a piece of 12x12 scratch paper (usually just papers from paper pads I really dislike) under my trimmer which I'll pull out to protect my desk if I'm misting near the edge of my layout or to test stamping or ink colours on. If I happen to get messy stuff on my desk I just wipe it off immediately, but like slicksister, the slightly scratched up surface was part of the appeal of buying this desk for my craft space.

I have a vintage desk which I mostly use as is too. It's a bit beat up already but I try not to make it worse. I just use a non stick mat if I'm doing something messy, but I'm mostly a clean crafter. I had a glass top on my dressing table/desk as a kid and I hated it. My parents got it to protect the surface but there was something about it that I just didn't like... maybe the coldness of it? It would be practical for crafting but I think I might still find it unnecessary and unpleasant. Have you considered the peel off wallpaper, sort of like contact paper, that's popular lately? I have a partial roll that I used to make a photo backdrop and I've considered using it to cover a piece of thin board to create a desktop to sit on top of my desk. This crafter used it to make a photo backdrop: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWLEGuQXnHo Maybe something similar would work to protect your tabletop? Or maybe you could just apply the wallpaper stuff straight to the desk?

I have a large black self-healing mat (3x4) I purchased on Amazon years ago. My craft desk stays reasonably protected. I’m ok with a bit of staining or “scars” (character?)…. It’s a craft desk for me and I had it made. I want it to be loved and well used.

Lots of great tips here. I may add a new (prettier or more neutral colour) large cutting mat on my Christmas list. I forgot that I have a glass mat as well.

A glass shop cut acrylic 1/4” tops for my Ikea desk top, Alex units (it goes across several of them) and an old Crate & Barrel desk top. The C&B one was done years before I started card making. I like that it’s less clangy than glass and not as cold feeling when my arm rests on it. I don’t know if the price was much better than glass.
A Tim Holtz glass mat is permanently on top of the Ikea desk. Occasionally I put a self-healing cutting mat on top of it that has a Ranger craft mat taped to it. The craft mat is folded around the cutting mat on the top and bottom and painters tape holds it on. I just happened to have an extra self healing cutting mat so used it since the edges of the Ranger craft mat curl after a while.
If I bought a new glass mat today it would be the white magnetic one that comes in different sizes. Though I do like the part black/part white Tim mat.

I have a Mission Style antique desk that was refinished with a very gloppy application of varnish, so I don’t feel guilty using it for crafting. I would love to have a glass top. It’s on my wish list, but things like a new roof and a new boiler prevent it from moving up the list. I’m using the big green quilting mat for intense cutting with box cutters. I use the WRMK teal mat for all my other work. I laugh when I recall I first started scrapping & card making and could do all my work on a 12x12 mat!

I got the WRMK teal mat AND glass mat (both 18x24) last Christmas from JoAnn. They were ridiculously INexpensive ($15 and $25), so keep an eye out.
I don't use the teal one much. I just craft on and mess on the glass one. It's so nice and big.
