If so, what did you think? Care to share any tips or tricks? Here's a LINK TO WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.I'm growing out my curls (they're shoulder length now) and they are just now reaching the 'I can make a messy bun' stage and am looking for options so the bun is not quite as small. I have a decent amount of hair, but my hair itself is fine so a little bulking up is in order. I've probably go another year of growth before I can really do a bunch of things with it, but until then I'm going to give it my best shot. This in-between stage is painful. I've had curly hair all my life and really have never "done" anything with it styling-wise other than getting a good cut. If you've got any clips, headbands, etc you love, people with curly hair who show styling tips (I do follow "me and my curls" on IG) I'd love to hear about them. I can put it in a pony tail now but it looks ridiculous....like a baby's pony right now. I'll need more length to make a pony work! Thanks so much!

My daughter used this when she was younger and her ballet bun was pitifully small. No advice on curly hair, but if you want to add volume to your bun it will work fine. She also says that if you take an old sock and shop of a section of it, it will do the same thing for free.

The sock trick that Darcy Collins mentioned I think actually works better. The foamy buns are too big and perfect. The sock gives it the bulk without looking like you’re wearing a hair piece. The only trick I’ve used it after you pull your hair through the hole and spread it out over the bun/sock use a hair tie over the whole thing to lock it all in place. Then it’s easier to manipulate the ends and get it spread out more evenly.

My daughter used it all the time in dance. It was the required bun for both studio competition and high school Poms. They’re great because it acts a little like velcro and helps hold the hair in. We had half a dozen of them around the house or in cars.

Ohhh, thank you for the sock tip - I might try that as well I'll have to look through my sock stash and see if I have anything in the medium blonde to light-ish brown tones in the bottom of my sock drawer. If I decide to purchase a donut styler, could y'all help me with which size to buy? With *just touching the shoulders when dry curly hair,* would I want to start with the small or the medium size?

Medium. The small would be for kids. And now you know you’ll have to share pics. 😉

My daughter used this for a musical. I suck at doing anything creative with hair including a basic bun. She has very thick hair (she gets it thinned) and the large worked great. There's a video clip on the link too.

I got those bun makers that look like 2 slap-wrist things we had in school many years ago. It didn't work for me because my hair is way too thick for them.
I have used the sock method for a few years. Worked out GREAT. You just cut off the bottom part of a sock. I do use a lot of bobby pins when I do that.
I normally just twist it into a bun and put a satan hairband around it. Easiest method and it holds all of my hair.

Since you do have a lot of curl and you pull the bun maker almost to the end of your ponytail, then wrap, I think you'd have enough to cover one. I have fine, thin hair that is a bit coarser with my grays that have come in and the small one would work for me.

I can put it in a pony tail now but it looks ridiculous....like a baby's pony right now. I'll need more length to make a pony work! Thanks so much! I have curly hair. Shoulder length when wet and chin length when dry. I wear bandannas/scarves instead of headbands, especially in the summer. I roll the bandanna and tie it at the side of the top of my head. It just leaves a couple jaunty ends outside the knot. (Big head.) With larger square scarves or longer narrow scarves I tie them under my hair with the tails hanging down my back or I tie under my head but to the side with tails hanging forward over one shoulder. Scarves are always available at thrift stores. For me, the problem with pony tails and tight buns was always stretching out the curl. I used to love banana clips; you didn’t have to pull your front hair back so tightly AND it created a softer cascade, not tight tail, in back. There are usually similar, but two-piece, toothy gizmos available to do a half-up hairdo or an all-up-or-back hairdo. Again, for me, the key is leaving the pulled up bits of hair relaxed and wavy. This sometimes involves softly twisting the hair that will be secured. Same concept when I use bobby pins, clips, barrettes. Yes, I realize this is basically a paean to 80s/90s hair trends. Everything old is new again.

You flashed me back to the early 70s and my jazz dancing days. No tips on how to use the donut because my mom took care of it for me.

I've used the bun maker you listed and I've used a sock. Both work fine, but I tend to use the bun maker when I want a more polished look, and the sock for a more messy bun look. I also don't use these two items in the same way. The bun maker, I pull my hair thru the donut hole and snug it up against my head and then start winding my hair around it to cover it. With the sock, I pull my hair thru the hole, but hold it at the ends of my hair and start rolling it towards my head rolling my hair with it. With the sock bun way, I get great beach waves out of the deal for the next day.

All my girls have very curly hair but they all style it differently. One uses the sock trick and has for years. Works great.
