freecharlie.. I grew up in seattle, so we all knew about the japanese american concentration camps. there was a teacher at our grade school whose sister wrote the first book about her experiences there (not with all the bad details). and it was just part of the dna of the history of our community. my dad was in high school and remember when the japanese american kids did not come back to school the next year.
my school friend wrote Snow falling on cedars and 25 yrs ago, when he was doing book tours, he said most people he met in the east had no idea about the camps. my dad knew a guy whose parents snuck in and took home movies inside the camps. the film is in the smithsonian. my dad also worked with a guy whose parents sent him to japan to go to high school.. the war broke out and he was sent to a concentration camp.. as he was an american citizen. he spent the whole war in a camp..
good for you for teaching this!!

I find it utterly ridiculous that out of touch old white dudes think that books are the primary source of reading or information for teens and young adults.
Every single teen I know has a phone in their hand or access to a computer with complete and uncensored access to the internet.
Maybe they should be more concerned about that. I mean hell, they could actually Google the idiots trying to control the books they have access to and uncover their skeletons in the closet.

Same people who object to Maus will let their kids watch any number of violent super hero movies.
But what I really love is how as educators, we’re constantly encouraged to keep lessons engaging and relevant to the students. And we enjoy doing that, because who doesn’t want to see kids deeply engaged with the material? If you’re still teaching at this point, that’s pretty much your whole reason for showing up every day.
But when a book emerges that really engages students in tough and important material, that gets kids talking and having meaningful discussions, and engaging in critical thinking, welp, we have to tear that book apart and set aside its literary value and capacity to engage students. We have to focus on what a few people might find offensive.
Talk about missing the forest for the trees.

The idea that factual, age appropriate history textbooks should be removed because what happened in history might make some people feel “uncomfortable” is ludicrous. I could not have said this better. every age needs appropriate education - the hard, not nice, and confronting is especially something that needs to be discussed so that a fully informed opinion can be formed. Our children / grandchildren are certainly much more informed on all types of subjects than people of my generation (I am 67) never talked about and possibly even thought about. I find it amazing to listen to my 7 year old DGD and have been pleasantly surprised with her knowledge.

So pretty much every “history” book, Bible, and health book should be banned.

Should kids be shielded from history & all aspects of life?
Only if ALL children can be shielded and not just those who have not already experienced the effects of dark side of history first hand.
So, no.
