Update: I received the new Micron Pens in the mail and really like them. They do work well for me, they write well at an angle. If I had 2 minor complaints, they would be that the pens seem very short, and I have small hands. I had DH try and write with one and it literally fell out of his hand, it is not long enough. So a very small pen. The other small issue is that to get the "full" width of writing, you need to push harder. So like a marker, the line width is variable. My hand did hurt (I have arthritis) after just a short paragraph of journaling. I wish the ink flowed smoother. But overall, MUCH better than my first Micron pens that I have to use totally vertically. www.dickblick.com/products/sakura-pigma-micron-pn-pens/I also ran into Office Max and got the Uniball roller pens in 0.5 width, as recommended by ghislaine. While I like these, they are a little scratchy, and the line is very very thin. I double checked several times to make sure I got the 0.5 and I did, but I would like a thicker line. I liked that they are acid free and while I am not sure I want them for journaling, I do have 3 very nice pens now. I am going to keep trying them. I did not pick up the Sharpies, as I could not see that they were acid free, or archival. Thanks all! At least I have 2 options now for writing at an angle. I think the look of my journaling will improve, as it was very difficult to write vertically. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I had another journaling pen question and did not want to hijack the other thread. I looked at all the journaling pens and cannot tell "how" they write...I hold my pen at a slant, if that makes sense, not straight up and down to the paper. (perpendicular?) So pens like the Zig writer, and the micron pen and even the LePen which I like best, are challenging. Are there specific pens that were recommended (like STAEDTLER) that write well at an angle? TIA!

That's a very interesting question, kmage! I never actually thought of it...I actually just picked up a pen to see how I write, and I hold my pen quite perpendicular to the paper, and was a fan of the Staedtler Triplus. I will grab one later and try holding it at more of an angle and see how it compares.

I think gel pens work well when writing at an angle. I don't love gel pens, though. I have a Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip that has pigment gel ink that writes beautifully. The cap says "Metallic Sparkling Metal Lines". The only thing I don't care for is the line is wide at 1.0, but it's such a smooth write, even at an angle.

I have trouble with most of the journaling pens too because I also hold my pen at an angle! And, I also write fast and flowy. Most of those pens require you to slow down and write purposefully, otherwise the ink doesn't flow. I'm to the point anymore that I just use a regular pen if I'm writing a lot. I'm interested to see what others have to say about this!

Check out the Sakura Pigma Micron PN: "The Micron PN pen features the same high quality ink of a Pigma Micron Felt Tip Pen but with the added benefit of a durable plastic nib that's suitable for everyday use. The Plastic Nib (PN) provides skip-free performance with the ability to create a fine or medium line width (.4 mm to .5 mm) based on varying pressure. The polyacetal nib structure allows for smooth ink-flow whether writing fast or slow, for right or left handed users, and for writing at an angle. Ideal for journaling, writing, sketching, and illustrating on paper." source

Huh! I wonder if that's why I haven't bothered with any of those pens. I stick to my Uniball Roller Micro pen or fountain pens when I want color.

I must have misunderstood that. I have these and use these too. I still have trouble with them. They are a nice pen, don't get me wrong. But something about the way I hold my pen, and how fast I write, makes them not flow very well. I literally have to slow down to make them work correctly. Just my experience though.

I did mention the Micron pen, but the ones I have are these www.sakuraofamerica.com/product/microperm/ but mine are in a tan case, not black. I think they are pretty old. They don't have a nib where you can write at a slant.

I just tested with my Staedtler and while it writes if you hold it at an angle, it’s much better if you hold it straight up and down.
The Sharpie fine tip felt pen does better at an angle, if you don’t want to use a gel pen. It’s one of my favorite journaling pens.

They really are a nice pen, I just don't seem to have any better luck with them.

I stick to my Uniball Roller Micro pen I didn't realize these were archival/fade resistant, etc...I am going to pick one of these up today! Thanks!

I absolutely love paper mate ink joy gel pens. I get them from staples or Amazon. These are my favourite, too. I buy them at the Dollar Store - a pack of 12 for a couple of bucks! They're awesome but I don't use them for my journalling because I'm not sure how long they last. Any idea?

I also ran into Office Max and got the Uniball roller pens in 0.5 width, as recommended by ghislaine. While I like these, they are a little scratchy, and the line is very very thin. Yeah, that scratchyness is called feedback in the fountain pen world. It's very much like using a pencil actually. Different people fall on different places on the scale of feedback to super smooth/slippery. I need feedback for my handwriting to look good so that's one reason I always come back to these pens. They make excellent check writing pens due to the archival, water resistant nature of them too. Good luck with the pen search! There's got to be some kind of smoother rollerball with a thicker line out there somewhere.

@kendramage I missed this thread - I'm always looking for good journaling pens! I'd never considered the "angled" question, and I ran downstairs and tried all of mine out. Two pens stood out for slanted hold: my staedtler pigment liner .3 (the only width I have. I may buy a .5 given this finding) was great. I tried over and over as slanted a hold as I could get. And my Muji .7 was a beautiful smooth cursive too. But better at .7 than .5 if you are wanting a smooth feel - the .5 gave "feedback". Great term to learn ghislaine!!!
