That probably sounds selfish and I didn't explain it well, but I really need... I guess what you would call a safe space to retreat.
Blah! This is why I suck at journaling feelings on pages. I totally get it. And I also suck at journaling feelings on pages as well. Personally I feel Facebook, twitter, and tik toc were developed to provide all the fractious topics one could possibly want or need. I can definitely see that, I think it's hard for people to separate or compartmentalize their lives like that so politics and how people feel on social issues will definitely spill over into other places, especially the past few years.

I love seeing this topic here because I have been sooo torn on the subject myself. I am not in any means a scrapbook celeb, but I am on a creative team and try to share inspiration on my page. Personally, I am super liberal and athiest, but I know that people are coming to my instagram to see craft inspiration and I don't want to make anyone feel unwelcome as long as they are going to be respectful of me. It's not that I don't feel that political issues are important, they are, and I think that in my personal/professional life I have way more to do with politics than the average person, but I want to try to keep it off my craft instagram/youtube as much as possible because I don't want to turn that into a platform for anything other than crafting. I have a personal instagram that is mostly followed by personal friends/family (not scrapbookers) and if I really want to share something political there, I will do that. Sometimes I feel like my lack of posting political content on my scrapbook instagram might be construed certain ways, so I have felt a little pressured/torn in that. But, I have stuck to my initial thoughts about not posting overtly political messages. That said, I do share most of my projects, and my projects are about my life. With how prevalent politics has become, there is no way to keep that out of my projects. For example, I created a page about getting vaccinated and shared that. I also do weekly project life and want to include political references in my pages, because that's part of my life. I had an insert about the presidential election last year, stuff about the riots earlier this year, and lots of pages of myself wearing a mask. I didn't put these out there to make a statement, I put them out there because first, and foremost, I create my scrapbooks to document my life for me and my family. I share them online to provide inspiration and be part of a community, but I'm not going to sensor my life for that purpose. Nevertheless, every single time I post something that has any political undertone, even super minor (for example a screen shot of the front page of the NYT in a pocket in project life to record a current event), I will get DMs attacking me for my politics or yelling at me for including it on my page, and I will get unfollows. It's frustrating, especially because I try to have a polite discussion and typically get nonsense back (for example I had someone "yell" at me, with lots of curse words, that the NYT was fake news and then tell me they were unfollowing me for being "a stupid sheep" that read it, even though the screenshot of the NYT was about a completely nonpolitical news event... a hurricane), but I have to just accept that some people will never want to follow anyone who isn't exactly like them, and I guess that's okay. It's a fine line, and I wish it wasn't. I think it sucks and is an unfortunate result of our current political climate that you feel the need to let people know where you stand so that they don't think you have a different political stance than you do. I'm right of center. I'm not a Trump supporter, I'm pro-choice, got vaccinated in March, wear a mask, don't belong to QAnon, think Jan 6th was a travesty, especially all the veterans that participated (I'm a vet). I'm not an atheist, but only because I'm hedging my bets as agnostic. We're obviously similar in a lot of ways. I'm frustrated at the need for everything to be us vs. them, black or white, if you're liberal/conservative you have to believe a/b/c, no variations allowed and you will be judged accordingly. The older I get the more I see those easy beliefs I had in my younger years, are not so easy after all. I have some personal line in the sand issues, but they are mine based on my life experience. I don't feel capable of making those decisions for others with different life experiences. Both sides seem to want to be in the business of telling people what they can and can't do or think, rather than letting people decide for themselves and giving them the opportunity to try. All that said, unless I find someone pushing beliefs that I find beyond the pale, I can overlook their position and get inspiration. But I cannot think of anyone I follow that is that overt. I'm more put off by toxic positivity and that seems to be inescapable in this hobby.

Generally businesses that espouse their political views ae ones I avoid. The other day I went into my favorite bakery that I frequent often. My DIL works there. The owner was talking to someone and the two were in a deep mutual political discussion that I felt should have been take out of my earshot.
I said nothing. My DIL says she never says anything. Suffice to say they lean the polar opposite of us.
A long time local business was forced to close prior to the pandemic because h had political signs plastered all over this establishment inside and out in the downtown are next to the court houses and other government buildings. People just didn't want to be seen there even if they agreed. His enthusiasm cost him his business.
When I go to crops, same thing. There are some crops that have lots of what I call ignorant, insensitive political discussions. I regularly ask them to change the topic, which always engenders resentment toward me. Well it's entirely mutual I assure you.

I don’t do politics on Instagram. If anyone I follow posts something political on a business page, I unfollow them whether I agree with their stance or not. My mental health is more important than continuing to be marketed to and compromising my mental health in the process.
It is emotionally exhausting to be constantly bombarded with it.
That’s where I’ll leave it, since this is the papercrafting board. 😆

It's a fine line, and I wish it wasn't. I follow you. I haven’t noticed you posting anything that was particularly political. I can’t imagine why people would have an issue. Although, I’m not a person who would ever consider a vaccine political so there’s that. I’m sorry that people have bothered to reach out to be mean. That’s not the kind of people you need to deal with irl or online. And your IG does give me inspiration I followed it before you were on a team and I still follow. IMO your IG has a great tone; sort of like “here is what I did, and how I got there, hope it helps” kind of vibe. I hope you don’t have too many wackos bothering you. And not in particular about your post, but in general IMO, Medical issues, natural disasters, human rights, etc. are NOT politically ‘side’ based. And I have a lack of respect for anyone who would make them ‘sided’. As for the thread OP I don’t follow a whole ton of people to begin with but I will unfollow if the person is pushing their views as opposed to just having a viewpoint if you know what I mean. I can’t say I’ve ever reached out to anyone about it I just unfollow. ( I unfollow a lot because apparently I accidentally follow a lot when I’m scrolling thru reels ) but if I’m looking for creative inspiration I’m not looking for the ‘only right way’ but I’m looking for what is interesting to me today. So even if it’s not a ‘political’ view I don’t need the pushing that’s just not me I guess. But here’s the core of it, I’m in my mid 50’s I’ve been around the block a bit I’ve got my own stance on life and religion and stuff and I don’t need another. So if I have my view point & they have their view point we can get along wether or not the views are the same. If I have my viewpoint but they are pushing their views on/at followers that’s not my taste at all, even when I agree. Maybe most especially if I agree I don’t want to be beat over the head with it, I’m there already stop pushing at me. Does that make any sense?

To me my hobbies are my happy place so I prefer not to have politics present. It doesn’t bother me that someone posts a layout of current events as long as they don’t use it to preach. That said, if I find out something about them that I totally find disgusting or just makes me lose respect for them it will probably affect my interest and willingness to benefit them in any way.

I have always loved it when people stand up for what they believe in, even when it differs from my own beliefs. My belief that everyone is entitled to their opinion is paramount to the issue.
I understand wanting to support people/companies with similar viewpoints to one’s self. I also understand not wanting to support someone who has a viewpoint that you just can’t support. That is your choice/having your opinion.
I have only unfollowed people/companies if I do not like how they handle people who’s opinions differ from theirs, or who argue or name call. That behavior is very off putting to me.
