First off - hi! I was a lurker and occasional poster at 2Peas, then registered here in the first weeks. (Screen name Sparty on both boards). However, it wouldn't recognize my password today when I tried to post and never sent the email when I tried "forgot my password." So I've re-registered under a new name.
Anyhoo, here's my question. It's a long shot, but I've learned never to underestimate the peas! We are traveling soon to Riviera Maya, Mexico. Staying at Barcelo Maya Palace. Lots of reviews on tripadvisor suggest foregoing the shuttle back to the airport because it stops at every resort in between. They suggest booking a private car service, but they don't say who or how to contact. If you've used a car service in Riviera Maya, which one did you use? Do you recommend them? What is the phone # or web address? How much did you pay? And what time did you have them pick you up (I.e. how long before your flight time)?

Check with your current shuttle service and see if you can upgrade to a private, non-stop trip

It's a long drive and likely to be an expensive one. I've done a private cab in puerto Vallarta where the airport is quite close to the resort strip but not on the Carribean side. I did hire a car for a trip last time in cancun. We went to crococun crocodile sanctuary (it's excellent!) and the only reliable way was cab. I think we were in $75 return. I just got a cab off the street and negotiated it before I stepped foot inside. Fortunately you'll find most people speak very good English in the Mayan Rivera part of Mexico.

What is the phone [HASH] or web address? How much did you pay? And what time did you have them pick you up (I.e. how long before your flight time)? I went to Barcelo Maya Palace this past summer. I took the shuttle back. In our case, for the ride back to the airport, there were 6 of us. We didn't stop anywhere. We went straight to the airport. When we flew in, DH and I flew in together and the other 4 were together. I believe we stopped at 2 resorts on the way to Barcelo. It was not that big of a deal. I would not pay for a private car because the ride to the airport was an extra 20 minutes or so. ***ETA If you have to stop at Puerto Adventuras, that probably takes the longest because the place is huge. You enter and exit at the same place so if someone is headed to a resort that is way in there, it can take a little longer. We stopped there on the way from the airport to Barcelo. What we liked though was that it gave us a chance to check it out since we haven't been to a Puerto Adventuras resort yet. We might go there next time.

we booked non-stop transfer thru apple vacations, who we had booked our trip with. it was $100 for our family of 4, round trip, and soooo worth it! the first time we went to RM, we stayed in a resort near playa del Carmen, and the transfer stopped at about 6 other hotels and took over 2.5 hours.

We stayed at the Barceló. It is apx 1.5 hrs from the airport. Our shuttle was booked through the company we booked our hotel through. There were only us and another couple on it. You can try Viator to book a shuttle. I think they have a private one if your tour operator doesn't offer it.

We've been to The Barcelo twice for 2 of our kid's senior trips. We flew into Cancun and took a shuttle set up by out travel agent through Apple Vacation tours. We didn't make any stops but that was because we were all going to the same place. Another time we went to a resort in Playa with just our family and we arranged a car service through a travel agent. I don't remember the price but it was easy and pretty fast.

Thank you for all the advice! I will study all your tips when I get a minute. Just wanted to pop in and say thank you! In case it matters, we booked thru Delta Vacations and the shuttle transfers were included in the package with the hotel. I don't mind making stops on the way in from the airport, but am worried about the trip back to the airport. I've heard it's an hour drive but can take up to 2.5 hours with stops at different resorts. We don't want to worry about missing our flight or have to leave super early, kwim?

Trust me - they never cut it close. In fact, past experience says that they leave a little too early. The Cancun airport is pretty decent, so it's not the worst place to hangout in. I do hate that drive from Cancun to PdC though. We have started flying to the Cozumel and taking the ferry across.
