Like you, my scrapbook style is "clean, modern and simple." I also don't like themed products or bulky embellishments. Therefore, I never purchase mystery/grab boxes/bags because I predict they'll contain unsold items that are unusable for me.
Regarding your box: From an online scrapbook store, I would not have expected used products; perhaps they are items used in demos or virtual classes. I would expect magazines to have been clearanced the year - not 15 - after publication. If all boxes were filled with junk, the online store may have damaged their business/reputation in the process of raising awareness/money for a worthwhile charity!

My biggest disappointing mystery box was from the ink road. Definitely lacked value; just was not a good experience.
The best thing about the sc mystery box debacle was that while looking for support , I found the peas.
Op, your box sounds awful. I would let them know that your box contained used items. It is for a worthy cause, but this is not okay.

Thank you all for commiserating! Not fun that so many of us have had bad experiences, but it is what it is. I actually lucked out with an amazing mystery box last year when I bought a destash box off a Canadian YouTuber. It was absolutely incredible value and I guess it made me let my guard down. I went back to re-read the description of the box and it said "gently used items" would be included, which I took to mean a lightly stained stamp and dies that had been separated (wishful interpretation). I certainly didn't think they'd send me remnants of paper pads and random stacks of tags 😑 I still can't decide if I want to email them or just forget about the whole thing, but I appreciate all the sympathy from the Peas 🙂

I'm sorry that happened. I would be disappointed as well. I have never been brave enough buy mystery boxes but I love watching the unboxing videos.

I noticed she really destashed the last year or two. I'm sorry your recent experience sucked, I noticed a Canadian online store had grab bags recently but passed on it. I tend to only do grab bags from specific manufacturers. I just used a piece of paper last month from my OA mystery box that I got years ago - I got mostly the cowboy-themed papers and the birthday party papers that look like they're from the 50s or 60s. I like them but they gave me a lot. It was still good value, though. The Scenic Route going out of business sale was excellent and I still have a ton of stuff left from it - great value. I also bought a Hip Kit mystery box about 3 years ago and still use the product today. It was really good. It was also my first and only purchase of Hip Kit, though, so I didn't have to worry about duplicates.

No, I bought 2 destash boxes from Ardyth Percy Robb for $100 each but the value was easily 2.5x that amount! She was very kind about accommodating any requests she could as well (I asked that she not include too many holiday sets since I don't really celebrate Christmas). Definitely an excellent buy for me, she sent me 3 or 4 Birch Press layering die sets which are crazy expensive, as you probably know. Though your comment did remind me, my first experience with a mystery box actually was with Justine about 5 years ago. Unfortunately it was the reason I originally thought, never again... The things she sent were in ok shape but they weren't to my taste at all and I didn't feel like they were worth the $75 I paid for the box.

I have heard good things about Ardyth as a person, but I have no idea where I heard them. I'm glad her boxes were good - the Birch Press sets can be over $100 for 3 dies, so that's amazing. I'll have to buy one of hers the next time she destashes! My good experiences weren't really with destash boxes in the same sense, I think it's safer buying from a manufacturer. You did a good thing by buying something with the proceeds going to charity.
