and paid for it 🤦🏻♀️ I impulse ordered a mystery destash box from an online scrapbooking store here in Canada for $50, with a purported value of $200... I just got it yesterday and I am so disappointed!! It is honestly just trash 😩 they sent me 2 dies, one weird, heavily stained stamp, and a metal stencil and then a bizarre assortment of embellishments, even though I said in my notes that my cardmaking style is clean, modern and simple and I don't like bulky embellishments. They also helpfully included a book about cardmaking from 2004 and a scrapbooking magazine from 2005 🙄 and weirdly, also 2 half-used 6x6 paper pads, complete with little strips of paper that they clearly used for different projects. I am so disappointed but don't want them email them, since the destash box proceeds were to go to breast cancer support.
Anyone else have mystery box horror stories to make me feel better?

I've had good and bad experiences with mystery boxes. The last one was from an online store also and was very disappointing. I got a wooden decor piece that I would never have purchased, a bunch of ugly dies and some mismatched paper. I decided not to buy any more mystery boxes after that. I'd rather pick out what I want then get a deal on a bunch of crap.

Ah I'm so sorry! I've watched some mystery/destash unboxings on youtube where people have been given 3 or 4 of the same ugly kit (no wonder it didn't sell...) on top of a stack of 30 sheets of the same printed paper. You always hear them say "oh well I guess I'll pass these along..." which is great and all but when you're paying $50 and $60 and end up with 5 useable items it really feels scammy. I've only gotten the Pinkfresh destash box from earlier this year.. and that was after watching a handful of unboxing videos to make sure the "worth" was there for me.

midorica, first (((hugs))) to you. Try if you can to look at it as a donation to a good cause. If it makes you feel better (and I totally did this) just take the stuff to your closest thrift store and get it away from you. Double donation. I have been burned twice. The first was with a no-name company that offered a mystery box, mostly for card making. It was beyond belief horrible. The stamps were so old that when I tried to take them off the backing, they ripped in half. Everything was years and years old. I donated that whole box. The second was actually from Ranger. I was SO BUMMED. I got all this chunky glitter, like more glitter than anyone could use in a lifetime. Donated that. I got some stickles and those were okay-ish, but a lot of people had gotten ink or cool TH stamps in their boxes and I didn't get any of those. Just glitter. Anyway, I am sorry that was so disappointing. At least with Ranger all my stuff was new.

That would really be upsetting, even though the money was going for a good cause. It sounds like the value was definitely not as advertized.
I have never bought a mystery box. I don’t do monthly kits, or clubs, either, because I don’t want to pay for something that I don’t love.

I'd be upset about it, too. Very disappointing. I'm always tempted when I see good unboxing videos but I can never get myself to take a chance. I've tried Freckled Fawn $5 grab bags and was disappointed when I got smashed puffy stickers and other cheesy embellishments that I wouldn't use. So it was a small price to pay to learn a lesson. I'm sorry it was a bigger price for you.

I am so sorry!
I swore off mystery boxes years ago after a friend in retailing told me they're a way to get rid of stuff people haven't bought. This wasn't in crafting, it was in up-scale food store, but I think it's the case that you'll get a lot of "value" (i.e., the price of the items originally) but not necessarily stuff people want.

I would probably email them and let them know my stuff seemed used and not at all what you expected. Let them know you are glad the money went for a charity you support, but that what they sent was really unacceptable.
If they get away with it then the next charity will have very wary customers likely choosing to give it a pass and just donate directly to their chosen causes.

My horror story is not quite that bad! I got a destash box off a popular scrapbooker on ig, who participated in a few design teams, etc. The stuff was kind of okay, but I definitely had buyers regret immediately. That part was my fault. What I never expected was that everything smelled very faintly of cigarette smoke. 🤢

I have only been disappointed on an embellisment swap on at the old board. I liked only 2 items. The rest was either crappy or definitely not my style. Other than that I stick to grab bags only from places with a history of good items. PinkFresh was one of them.

Okay this is a little different, but funny. We have a group that scrapbooks once a month at a local school. Once a year we would do a holiday party and get donations from local businesses and do a raffle (money went to the school's PTO). We had a craft store in town that was part of a small chain (Or, WA) that had always donated some great stuff. Well Hobby Lobby came to town and this store went decided to close - so the year they were going out of business they asked if we wanted some of their mystery bags they were selling for $5 (gift bags the size of a paper lunch bag folded and stapled so you couldn't see in). Sounded good. So we did a raffle (bought tickets put them in cups in front of the bags). OMG it was most bizarre thing. Someone got a bag that had glue sticks and some used ribbon. I got one that had used paint - so used there was only a drip left and a used stamp shamy (almost black). There was one that had office supplies - like someone dumped the contents of a desk drawer. Not one was "good". And If I would have paid $5 for any of them I would have been mad. But the money went to the school so a good cause and all. We still joke about it though. So weird.

Oh geez I would not expect to get used stuff. Yuck! I gave up after always ending up with Christmas items. I don’t celebrate or scrapbook Christmas.

You're a good sport and a very kind person for seeing the donation as the main reason for buying that mystery box. I also think you are more than justified in being disappointed and feeling cheated in some way. Their description was very misleading. I'd send the email.

There was one that had office supplies - like someone dumped the contents of a desk drawer. Not one was "good". Oh my goodness! That did make me laugh but wtf is wrong with people? A lot of that sounds like trash. Totally bizarre. weirdly, also 2 half-used 6x6 paper pads, complete with little strips of paper that they clearly used for different projects I mean, if someone sent me a selection of loose 6x6 papers I wouldn't be too disappointed, but paper pads with sheets obviously ripped out? That's not a nice feeling to get a bunch of someone's leftovers and junk (unless that's what you knew you were getting). I remember some companies giving away or selling off dies in mystery boxes that were only useful if you had the coordinating (sold out) stamp already. Sure, they want to get rid of those things, I understand, but sending them to random customers who can't use them is only going to make you look bad. Some things need to be donated or trashed. I would get rid of anything you don't love or that makes you feel that you were taken advantage of and consider the money spent as a donation. But I'd be hard pressed to forget this and support the store in the future. Just leaves a sour taste in your mouth, right?

I've always thought that mystery boxes and grab bags, were the unsold products and junk that a company was selling in the form of mystery box or grab bag, as a last effort at collecting some revenue for the unwanted junk so it's less of a financial loss for the company.
I would never purchase a mystery bag, for this above reason. I rather use the funds to purchase items that I want.

The one and only time I did a mystery warehouse box was when Basic Grey was going out of business and offered them as a onetime thing. It was BG (who I loved and still miss, BTW), so I figured it couldn't be anything terrible. And I was not disappointed - some of it wasn't exactly my taste, but I could still use the B side. I mean, it was BG!
Sorry your mystery box didn't turn out well - I would definitely email the company/store with your feedback.

Years ago, I used to buy the Outlines Rubber Stamps grab bags at the expos. They were filled with unmounted stamps. I was never disappointed, and there were always a lot of brand new, unused stamps that I liked. I still have them. I gave away the ones I knew I wouldn't use, but there were only a few. None of them were used or damaged. Also, I never spend more than $10 on a "surprise" anything.

Ugggh... I'm so sorry. I've never ordered a mystery box for this reason. I think a manufacturer - at least you know if you like them. But yeah, I know what's in the clearance at my LSS and it's not pretty! I'm glad it was for charity.

I'm guessing if the stores don't sell these items through grab bags then they donate them as prizes at crops...
I've received some really awful crop prizes! Like the 4x4 album by a designer that's no longer in business, which didn't even include pages to fit! and the odd shaped xyron tape without the xyron machine!
I have also won some really nice crop prizes and really appreciate those companies that are almost always consistently generous.

Anyone else have mystery box horror stories to make me feel better? You just got pure crap! I understand not liking really old and very theme specific items. You received USED things. EW!
I've only done one October Afternoon mystery box. It was mixed. Lots of great alphas, but WOW! Tons of an ocean themed pirate line. I think it was called Treasure Island. I've tried to use that in creative ways because I live nowhere near an ocean and I used as much as I could for when my son was a skeleton for Halloween.

Awww that stinks. I've had it happen a couple times. SC and an Echo Park box once.
Usually EP boxes are awesome but I think they packed mine very last and dumped all the leftovers. 🙄

Uggh! I'm so sorry.
My first box (yes I've done this more than once) was really a disappointment. It was a box stuffed with unsellable items. And the random dies (2!) for a discontinued stamp set didn't make me happy. However, I do still use one stamp from the box. I swore off mystery boxes (haha!). But if the funds are going to a good cause I will buy a box. And I think there is a certain thrill of buying something unknown. The other boxes were from YTers that I follow de-stashing their items. I knew these would be mostly used items and they said the proceeds would be sent to charities local to them. I've received a few items I already owned. The products I don't like I let me crafty friends pick over and take whatever they want. I do have a rag-tag box of itemsthat I look through every now and then an pull something out to use, but I really should re-home them. And I should stop and use my money for what I really want.

I’ve never been brave enough to order mystery anything😂. I could maybe be tempted from somewhere like Elle’s Studio, or Felicity Jane, brands that I really like, and don’t own much from. Even then, I’d rather just spend the money on a sure bet. Sorry you had a bad experience, that’s crummy!

I think I received the same OA mystery box! My son was a pirate for Halloween one year so I used it for that, but I’m going to have to figure out how to use the rest. I think I have enough Treasure Island to make 20 pages. 😂

My worst box was a prize box from Paper Crafts Magazine. I applied to their card makers of the year and was a runner up (an editor actually FB messaged me to tell me that I lost 3-2 in a tie breaker for a top spot but was awarded runner up instead). The winners received $600+ in brand new, awesome products. Runners up were supposed to receive a mystery prize box and I couldn’t wait to receive my box! I was hoping for a few new stamp sets or new inks… not as cool as the grand prize but still nice products.
My box was full of years old products, random weird theme products, and just junk. I kept one older Echo Park collection pack and donated the rest. I was so, so disappointed. I missed the grand prize by one vote and received a box of outdated, unusable products. I remember I received the no longer supported Stampin’ Up! digital software. :/
The Studio Calico Mega Sale was pretty bad, too. What’s worse is I convinced my mom to get a box and her box was 10x worse than my box! I received some products that had value (like the AE DD kit I received, a few stamp sets, and an album). My mom received 50+ of the same 4x6 PL card and random crap. Instead of receiving $200+ in value, hers was less than $35. It was sooooo bad.

I got the October Afternoon one once, and got a STACK of rub-ons with designs about children and families. I don't like rub-ons, I don't have children, and I barely have and old photos from my family of origin to scrap. I mean there were about 50 of the things. I did get some other stuff I could use, so I can't complain, but that was weird.
