Chick pea curry Moroccan lentil stew Lentil soup Tofu lettuce wraps Polenta with lentil sauce Quiche
We try to stay away from fake meat. If I want a burger I make lentil mushroom patties or black bean burgers. I sometimes buy the eve’s Mexican ground round for in Chil, on nachos, or on pizza. It has nice flavour. But it isn’t something we eat regularly. It is just more of a processed food and I’m not sure how much better it is for us versus meat. I used to never buy it. Now I buy it maybe every other month. I do make Mexican lentils for on nachos or pizza too. We do eat tofu.
We don’t celebrate thanksgiving (in Canada - it’s just not a big deal for us) but I think the idea is to eat a nice meal versus thinking that turkey is the star of the meal.
I have made stuffing without meat. I use vegetable broth and poultry seasoning. I’ve also made mushroom gravy (that I’ve used in vegetarian shepherd’s pie - which now that I think of it might be nice for thanksgiving).

I'm vegan and I do occasionally eat fake meats. I used to do a lot of experimenting and trying to cook a good seitan but man, that learning curve is TOUGH. Here is a gravy recipe made from caramelized onionshere is a mushroom gravyI even have a Mushroom Wellington recipeI was never crazy about mushrooms before becoming vegan but I'm really starting to get into them now. Sauce Stache makes crazy things from mushrooms. Here's a pulled pork but I haven't tried this one yet- I have made pulled pork with jackfruit and it was amazing. Here is one from Tasty with the jackfruit. Since becoming vegan (and before to be honest), I have spent TOO much time cooking on holidays. This year we are actually going to a fancy plant based restaurant for Thanksgiving and I am thrilled.

I will happily eat all sides. But we have had other things over the years as well. We have tried the Tofurky roast, as well as some Gardein products, which I liked better, myself. But we've also made vegan shepherd's pie and stuffed acorn squash (we had dried cranberries, wild rice, and walnuts in ours, if I recall) as well as vegan pot pies. We tend to love harvest season foods, so every November we choose several new recipes from online to try. And we incorporate one or two of those into our Thanksgiving meal. Our traditional items tend to include mashed potatoes, green beans, a salad of some sort, a sweet potato or butternut squash casserole, rolls, either an apple or mushroom based stuffing, and mushroom and/or onion gravies. Sometimes we bake up some cinnamon pears, too. So yeah, just the sides are well enough for me.

I'm not vegetarian, but I'd rather eat all the sides than the turkey. They're the best part to me. LOL.

I am vegan, I usually eat with my inlaws and they make (mostly) vegan sides so there are plenty of things to choose from. One year I did the Gardein holiday roast and I thought it was pretty good. I think I also remember a field roast one that came in puff pastry. This year I may order the hassleback squash as a main from our local vegan restaurant, or the vegan turkey from the south african place. I don't usually eat fake meat, but when I am bringing something to share with others I will bring something like that so they can try it. But usually there is so much that I can eat I don't feel left out either way. I love all the Gardein products...I'll have to try this.

We've tried lots of stuff. One year, we ordered a tofu turkey from the local health food store. It was okay. I tried making a tofu turkey, which involved wrapping tofu around a core of dressing. It was okay, too. Last year, we did the stuffed acorn squash thing, which we both thought was pretty good. This year, DH came across this in the veggie meats section of Kroger and bought it, so we're going to give it a try. I actually like Quorn products, despite the fact they're made from mycoprotein, which sounds sort of yuk, but tastes pretty good. (They are vegetarian, not vegan, though.) I never liked dealing with a turkey, sticking my hand up in the cavity, being afraid it wasn't cooked enough, etc., so I don't miss it much.

I used to like something but it is vegetarian , rather than vegan. It was made from Brie or Camembert with a generous blob of Redcurrant Jelly as a layer on top. Then the whole lot was wrapped up in filo pastry that was twisted on top to make it look like a parcel and baked in the oven. They were ready made , but fairly easy to do at home I imagine.
I would also second the ideas for a Mushroom Wellington.

If you have a Whole Foods near you they offer many different options of entire Thanksgiving dinners with or without turkey-they offer a vegan holiday meal that includes a Cremini Mushroom Roast. We ordered this last year and it was really good. It was so nice not to have to worry about cooking (it's all premade through their deli). They also offer many options al la carte so you can pick and choose and make your own meal. This year my parents are coming over and my father is making the turkey and bringing it with him. I normally don't eat meat at all but because of this (he's 82) I will be eating turkey that day. We are responsible for the sides and because we are leaving for our vacation 5 days later, I have decided to order all of the sides again from Whole Foods ready made. Between the getting ready for this vacation plus being part of the Christmas card exchange I am very grateful to have the Whole Foods sides that we can buy ready made as an option. It's a lot less work and bother for me. We leave December 1 and I won't be back until the 22nd-2 days before our German Christmas-we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. My plan is to have all of the gifts bought and wrapped before we leave on the first of December, but we'll see how that goes

I love eggplant Parmesan or lasagne or stuffed shells or acorn squash/butternut squash stuffed with quinoa and other goodies . All seem festive to me alongside those that are eating turkey.

I am looking at recipes for Mushroom Wellington. I’ve seen several recipes on line that look amazing, but if anyone has a tried and true recipe, please share. This is my first plant based thanksgiving so I’m open to ideas.

I can handle our traditional family recipes, but it's nice to know this option is available for us as well as our vegan/vegetarian guests. I will check with our local Whole Foods.

I am not a vegetarian/vegan but two of my kids are and I made this Vegan Nut Loaf for them for Christmas a couple years back. It was a big hit with them. I don't like nuts or chickpeas so I didn't try it. Thank you for sharing this, I checked it out, sent it to vegan DD and we are now making it for Thanksgiving for her She is a foodie and thought it sounded great!

I’m not a fan of fake meats either.
Instead of looking at “side dishes” as “sides” make one of them the main thing! Find a great veggie gratin, or do a half squash—it could be all in presentation too—a big stuffed squash half takes up half the plate!!
I’m a “grazer” so it wouldn’t bother me to eat just sides!

Another thing we do often as a meal here which all of us love is baked sweet potatoes-
We buy huge ones, bake them, fluff the insides and then each person fills them with what they want—sweet to savory.
It’s super filling, full of goodness, and again plop that on a plate with some other veggie sides and you won’t miss meat!
Toppings: Butter Cinnamon Cinnamon sugar Brown sugar Marshmallow Creme (or marshmallows under broiler) Caramelized onions Stuffing Avocado Leftovers Beans Chili Sour cream…

My son and I are both vegetarian. My son and I will go shopping and pick up items to have some type of vegetarian/vegan curry dish for T. Day, as my son likes to cook. Everyone else (DH and my dad) will feast on a pre-purchased Zippy's T-Day meal. I don't feel I should have to do all the prep work and also cook food that I won't be eating, so this year they can have Zippy's.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of eating all the sides! The only fake meat product we eat is the Beyond Sausage Hot Italian, which isn’t very thanksgivigish. Last year we made oven roasted tofu bites (from the “It doesn’t taste like chicken” site - but with way more spices than she uses, kind of like the ChickfilA nuggets). So I had a little bit of that. And then ALL THE SIDES! Do they make a regular Italian sausage? I am a vegetarian now, but I always made sausage apple stuffing in the past. I'd love to make it vegetarian!
