My son is quite the artist and draws colorful fantasy illustrations on the regular. He is 18 and very responsible with supplies. He is also autistic and very peculiar with supplies. If something doesnāt āfeelā just right he will not use it. He currently uses cheapish markers from JoAnn, or colored pencils to do the filling in. I think he could potentially really love the smooth coloring of Copic markers, but sometimes his aversions are hard to predict. Given the high price point of Copics, Iām a little unsure about the purchase! Is there anything more affordable that is similar?

I use Prismacolor and Spectrum Noir markers, regular and tri-blend. These are both more affordable than Copic. How about purchasing individual markers for him to try before committing to a set? They can also be used together since they are all alcohol based, it's more just color selection and preference for how they color. I know Michaels sold Prismacolors separately, I think Blick Art carries them all. www.dickblick.com/categories/drawing/markers/brush/The one thing that may be a concern is you can sometimes smell the alcohol when coloring. Sometimes I get close to what I am coloring, so if you tend to do that, you may smell it. Which not sure if that would be an aversion for him or not? Also, would love to see his illustrations, you piqued my interest with "colorful fantasy."

I put a couple of them up in my inta stories. @scrappy.hippie š¤ Most of his creations look like the first one. He has a very specific look. My favorite is how he names them and often includes a little description. Itās wonderful to have these little peaks into his mind.
Thank you for the marker suggestions. Iāll be looking into them, and checking the YouTube comparison video. Helpful!

DD15 loves her Ohuhu markers - we get them from Amazon
But I picked up 18 no-name alcohol markers at Big Lots to give them a try and that might be a good option to see if he likes them if you don't want a big investment

I think kitbop has some off Amazon that she likes, I asked one time, but then forgot to order them! So I would be glad to find out again. I also got a bunch of alcohol markers at Tuesday Morning when they had the packs for 9.99, I do have a few duplicate colors I'd be happy to pop in the mail if you are in the US and wanted them to try out. PM me your address if you want me to send them off.

If youād like to test Copics, Iād second the idea of just buying one or two to see if he likes them. BTW, once in a while after shipping pressure has to be equalized since ink is on both sides - just pull the cap off of each side for a bit. There are lots of tutorials and classes of how to best use them. I hope he loves whichever markers you buy him! ETA I searched for @scrappie.hippie on Instagram and nothing came up.

I bought these for my artsy granddaughter and she liked them, so I bought a set for myself. I've never used Copics, so I have nothing to compare them to, but I like them.

I have been using Tombow ABT Alcohol Markers. There is little smell and they come in a pack of 5 color shades so it helped me find the right shading.

I've tried SO many brands.. even down to the Hobby Lobby brand. I have never found any that blend as well as Copic so I'm a Copic girl now. Can he try a small pack to see if he likes them?
Or is he trying to shade? I think if I wasn't trying to shade and blend it wouldn't matter as much.

Good luck! My low functioning Autistic son eats a lot of art supplies; markers, erasers, glue sticks. š¤£ My daughter is picky about those things too.

He only eats about five foods, and heād probably appreciate just forgoing food altogether if possible. š¤Ŗ He can barely tolerate being in the same room with us when WE eat. Lol. š¤

He uses pastels pretty often to achieve some blending, but it really pains him to get his fingers messy. He loathes the tactile feel of pastels, but likes the effect. If I can convince him to watch some how-to videos demonstrating Copics I think heād be intrigued. I need to find some that are at his level and are showing art he somewhat likes. If the artwork is not interesting to him he wonāt look at it. š

I also recommend the Dick Blick ones. On recommendation from a pea I got a set on Black Friday a couple years ago, and they have been fantastic, esp. for the price. I have bought some extra ones and Copics to add more colors, and they work great together. I have also tried the Firefly ones from TM and a Copic knock off from Crafts Direct, but they donāt come close to the Dick Blicks and Copics, and they arenāt lasting. Maybe Dick Blick will have a BF sale on them again this year, it is a great starter set.
