I have painted a heavily lacquered mahogany chest, I didn't even bother to sand or prime it, just slapped on two coats of Annie Sloan paint and used the lighter wax over the top - it looks fab and has stood the test of time (did it 2 years ago) without any knocks or chipping.

I've been interested in giving it a try also. Please post pictures of your results if you do it.

I've used it on a lot of pieces. Nightstands, dining chairs, coffee tables, bookcases. Its easy to use. It lasts well on surfaces you don't use a lot! Coffee table surfaces… not good. The wax is not enough protection. I had to repaint mine 3 times. Table legs? It works well! and looks great!

I have but I skipped the waxing and used Vax which belongs to the Shabby Paint brand of paint. It kinda reminded me of mod podge the way it brushes on. I painted a coffee table and my daughter's desk. They both turned out fabulous! edited to add that the Vax seems to protect better than just waxing

LOVE Anne Sloan chalk paint! it covers so nicely! I'm not sure if homemade paint would do the same thing. I have been doing doors. yea, Old doors. I find them at junk yards, or used places. I like them with either a glass window in them, or screen. I paint the door with anne sloan paint. Distress it a bit, and then the middle part, where the glass is I paint with blackboard paint. So the middle is now a chalkboard, and not a window. I don't wax it. Then my girls have taken them to college, apts, or their rooms, and used them for decoration. We used them at my dd's HS graduation, and wrote on them. I only had to do 2 coats on the doors. Super easy. The blackboard paint took alot more.

I'm trying out the Americana Decor chalky paint on my bedroom nightstands right now. I can't compare it to Annie Sloan, but I'm liking this stuff so far. For the price, I thought I'd give it a shot- $8.50 for the 8oz container.
