Ours just doubled!
I knew it would go up but I'm floored.
Is this normal? Or maybe should we shop around a bit?

Ours is $253 a month for his car. We have been shopping around after asking others what theirs is and it seems we can find something cheaper. We just had a claim on our homeowners, though, so we’re waiting for that to be finished before we switch.
ETA that it was $206 for both Dh and my vans, which have full coverage and are much newer.

Doubled sounds about right. And then they have an accident that isn’t really their fault (another guy ran a red and hit her) but they count it as 30% her fault and raise your rates some more. And then the second kid turns 16. And pretty soon you could finance a small country on what you’re paying for insurance every month.

I might be wrong, but I believe it’s less expensive if the teen is an extra driver of vehicle(s) owned by you vs driving a vehicle titled in their own name. Hence, my husband and I own four cars while my two teens own zero 😊

Hence, my husband and I own four cars while my two teens own zero 😊 We are the same (we own all four cars) but the insurance went up exorbitantly anyway. And none of us drives a fancy or expensive car. It’s ridiculous. Our area is known for having high auto insurance rates.

I just did a quote for a man, his wife, two teen daughters, with three 2021 vehicles and a 2011 vehicle. 250/500 coverage and it was about $2200 for the year. Granted, the girls are 18 and 19 I think, but I thought that was really good.
There are definitely a lot of factors that go into the rate. Much more than I had thought before I was an agent.

I actually was curious so I looked up our bills from 2016/2017 (see, never cleaning out the inbox pays off 🤣) and just adding ds increased our policy by about a third. We already had a 3rd car and didn’t adjust the coverage on it or anything else.

Hence, my husband and I own four cars while my two teens own zero 😊 I’m not sure if it matters if the car is titled in their name. But if they are a primary driver of a vehicle you own, the insurance will be higher than if they are an extra driver. For awhile we had three drivers and two cars and the cost didn’t go up much. But when we added the third car the cost rose a lot.

Oh no, my son is almost 18 and doesn’t have his license yet, but will hopefully be getting it soon. However at those rates I’m really not sure if we can afford it 😲😂

Our insurance repayments don't go up at all when we add a learner or newly licensed driver. But our excess payments if we make a claim and the teen was the driver do go up. In my case, my excess is $400 but if my son is driving and has an accident, my excess goes up to $1000. I much prefer it that way, rather than paying higher rates.
** I think that what we call "excess" is what you call "deductible"?

How long does this insanity last?!?! It went down when he turned 19 and 21, but due to general price increases, it is still around the same overall and he is 23.

Definitely shop around! We found that some companies wanted to charge us when DD1 had a learners permit (not license) and others did not. If you are willing to bundle (auto + home owners + umbrella) you may get a better quote.

I guess I could try to find a calculator online, but for so many of them, you have to put in SO much personal data - vs. just ages, zip or street (but not number), financial info, etc., that I'm not into it.
I did find out that our state is no longer able to use credit score as a criteria in rate setting. The rep said that that is feeding in to the higher rate too.

Ours almost doubled, but it wasn't too horrible because we went from paying every few months (paying both cars every six months, which meant every three months we paid an insurance bill) to now we pay monthly for all three cars. I'm guessing the biggest thing that helps us is the fact that we live in a state with really low rates (in addition to good grades, safety features on DS's car, drivers ed, good-driver rates and since we've had both homeowners and car insurance through the same company for over 20 years.) We went from $80ish a month to $130ish.

My son got his license last year at 18, so not sure if that is why it was less than expected. We added him to our 2 cars and it went up $60 per month.

We recently added 3 kids, but since all are over 18 and none have their own vehicle, insurance only increased $100/year per kid.

Hear you but you don't have boys - I was shell-shocked when my daughter turned 16 - there are no word for when my son turned 16 15 months later.

Also I know your probably having your driver in the safest car you have but when we switched our son to our oldest vehicle it dropped from the crazy high rate, can’t be too cool in moms old van

Doubled is about right. Ours doubled when we added twin DDs. Doubled again when we added DS 7 years later.

Mine was $100 per month for just me and one newer car. It added $100 to add DD and another $100 to add an older car. That was with driver's ed and good grade discounts.

We have USAA. Our insurance went up by $92 (per month) when we added DS and $54 when we added DD in the suburbs of DC, driving less than 50 miles a week. So that’s roughly $1,100 and $650 per year. Both had good student discounts. We didn’t add a 3rd car until a few months later, but I don’t remember what the increase was when we added that car.
