Ours only went up about $400 a year. No where near doubling. That was dd (girls are cheaper). When ds got his license, I was sure it would skyrocket but it didn't. Same increase. We have Geico. They both got the good student discount. I live in the suburbs of DC as well.

I don't remember but for us it wasn't much. But she also didn't get her license until she was 19 and she's female.
I feel for those with multiple teen drivers and/or boys.

Our ins didn't quite double, but it was close. We ended up with Progressive, which was the least expensive option for the coverage we needed. They get the good student discount, and now that they are in college (no cars there) there is an additional discount.

When dd got her's we only had 2 cars but when we added a third car, it didn't go up that much more. I did a dummy quote to see how much adding a third car would cost before she got her license and the increase wasn't that much. The OP didn't ask if they have a car they are the primary driver of, she asked if the policy went up significantly. With ds, we still only have 3 cars but we are looking to get another car for dd and I priced it out and it would increase by $600/a year.

Doubled sounds about right. And then they have an accident that isn’t really their fault (another guy ran a red and hit her) but they count it as 30% her fault and raise your rates some more. And then the second kid turns 16. And pretty soon you could finance a small country on what you’re paying for insurance every month. Hear you but you don't have boys - I was shell-shocked when my daughter turned 16 - there are no word for when my son turned 16 15 months later. Ugh, I've heard that. My sincerest condolences.

The thing is that there have beem studies that teen girls are actually more dangerous due to texting and other distractions.

Minnesota, adding our daughter our insurance went up $100 by adding her. From $96 to $196 per month. She's a straight A student (we get a discount for that). Also we are a 2 vehicle household with 3 drivers. Here that makes a huge difference. I recently asked about adding another vehicle our insurance would have increased by 40% again. Our vehicles are late models, not luxury and fully paid off. All of those things can influence payment.
I have twins, boy/girl who are 15. I'm terrified for when they turn 16.

Mine are supposed to leave their bag/phone in the backseat when they drive. So far any accidents they've had have been caused by other drivers (adult males in both cases, lol).

Not as much as I thought it would honestly. DS has a brand new car that is paid for, but we still pay full coverage. His deductible is $1000 though, so that dropped the cost quite a bit. He also does not have rental coverage. When we were looking at new cars, insurance was a deciding factor on which car he got. We narrowed it down to 2 cars, the Camry and the Accord Sport. The Accord was cheaper, so that's what he got.

What if they're using GPS/turn-by-turn? That would very rarely be the case. They mostly drive themselves to school, work, and friends' houses, and they know the way very well.

I was going to suggest checking if there’s a good student discount or discount for taking a safe driving course on line (GEICO has one for adults anyway) and/or in person - I don’t remember the details though.

I don’t get how insurance in the US is so cheap. I just did the math…in Canada we pay $8,160 a year for three vehicles. My daughter is 18 and has never had a claim. When she started driving at 16 our coverage went from $280 a month to $680.

We are already getting the good student discount and the driver training discount. And it’s still doubled 😒😒

When I worked in auto insurance customer service, these calls were always the most shocking to people calling in for quotes. Especially NY and NJ.
My son is in driver's ed now and will have his license by spring, so we are preparing for this.
