No meat in our dressing at the holidays. Years ago my grandmother would sometimes make Chicken & Dressing for Sunday dinner. She would put shredded chicken meat in the dressing before baking it. Haven't had that in well over 20 years though.

What is dressing in this instance? I’m thinking it maybe what we call stuffing? It can be baked inside the bird or on its own - onion, herbs, breadcrumbs etc?

Yes, exactly this I always put sausage in stuffing ... but my favourite version is one that my Mennonite grandmother made called 'bubbat', which includes dried fruit (mostly raisins). I'd always make it, left to my own devices, but dh hates dried fruit, so I make the 'regular' kind to keep peace in the family!

Yes, and it's usually called stuffing here but dressing in this instance is the same thing. I generally think of dressing as more if a salad topper. I don't make it or eat it, I've always hated it. DH makes Stovetop every year. My mom used to make homemade. No one has ever made one I like, despite their claims that I will love theirs. Ditto gravy, it's disgusting unless it's from KFC.

Yes stuffing is the same thing.. we dont stuff it in the turkey though... so i guess thats why we call it dressing... i really don't know... lol
At work someone was talking about putting bacon and ham hock pieces in her dressing..
I was curious to what other things people may add to theirs

Yes I put sausage in dressing.
Eta- and I’m in the US and was always told by my mom that it’s called stuffing if it’s stuffed in bird and dressing if it’s cooked in casserole dish. I make dressing.

For Thanksgiving, no meat in stuffing.
For Christmas, I stuff skin-on boneless chicken breasts with a sausage pecan stuffing.

When I make it, I do not use any meat. But I do use wine, wine makes everything better. Growing up dressing and stuffing were two different things. Both had a bread base. Dressing was made using the giblets from the turkey and was the consistency of paste. Stuffing was dryer and usually had sausage of some sort in it. I'm not a fan of either and happy to have found the Martha Stewart recipe we love.

No meat in ours. We also call it stuffing, even if it isn’t being stuffed. I always enjoy a good dressing or stuffing debate here. I love learning about so many regional differences that I would probably never hear about. 😁

I do not put any meat in my cornbread dressing, just veggies.
For my grandmother's dressing (the one DH refers to as "that nasty Yankee dressing") I stew a chicken and use the dark meat and some of the white meat (chopped in the food processor) along with quite a bit of the broth.

I put sausage in it. I call it stuffing whether it is in the bird or a casserole dish. It's what I grew up with saying.

Sausage, celery ,leeks , chopped apples, and dried cranberries!!!! It is SO delicious!!!! This sounds so good. I doctor up the stove top mix with celery, onion and dried cranberries but for some reason it didn't occur to me to add apple. Do you sautee the apple, or does it go in raw?

My mom makes the dressing/stuffing (we call it both) and uses a little of the gibblets. I need to pay attention this year because I love her dressing the most. She also uses celery, onion, bread and seasoning.

I grew up with very bland stuffing with just bread, celery, onion and salt and pepper, but when I moved to England I learned about using sausage in my stuffing. I also started adding long grain wild rice, and water chestnuts for crunch. I love my stuffing.

Yes, Jimmy Dean sausage!
We stuff the turkey with some, but cook some separately.

No. My ex mother law made oyster dressing and it was nasty.
I just like regular herb stuffing.

Oh yeah! Yankee dressing! NY-er transplanted to AR here. I was raised on white bread stuffing/dressing - no meat - and knew nothing about cornbread dressing before landing here. But I will admit that though I make - and like - both versions, I would probably go with the cornbread version if I had to pick one. Dh prefers the “Yankee Dressing” (I will be referring to it by this title from now on) so I make it. I’ve never put meat in my dressing, neither did my Mom, but I can see where sausage would be tasty.

I use a stuffing recipe that I found on the Pepperidge Farm website several years back and it is delicious. The key ingredients are sausage (I use mild or sweet Italian) and apples. My mom's stuffing has bacon as the meat. She stuffs the turkey itself, and cooks a pan alongside. It's good both ways. I just make the stuffing in a pan. I only put onions, lemons, and herbs inside the bird.

The day before Thanksgiving I make a stock by simmering the turkey neck with seasonings, (salt, pepper, garlic powder) chopped onions, and a pat or two of butter. After about an hour I remove the neck and pull off the meat before discarding the neck bones. I add the meat back into the cooling stock and refrigerate it until the next morning. I use the stock to moisten my stuffing/dressing which includes celery, onion, and water chestnuts, and additional seasonings. So good.

Sausage, celery ,leeks , chopped apples, and dried cranberries!!!! It is SO delicious!!!! This is the way I make it too - I love it!! However, most of the time we're at extended family's house for Thanksgiving, so the 2 people who make the turkeys make the stuffing (host + 1 other that rotates every year, in the before-times) - so it's not me very often. (Large extended family, LOL.) This year we'll be at my Dad's and he makes really delicious stuffing using the giblets, turkey stock, onion or leeks, celery, fresh sage, & other usual seasonings, but no sausage, dried cranberries, or apples. He always made the stuffing when my sibs and I were growing up - my Mom baked the bread/rolls, pies, & veggies & salad while my Dad did the turkey, stuffing, and cranberries.

No meat in ours. I always hated stuffing until I tried my sister in laws from her husband's family. It's called Grandma Foley's Stuffing and we all make it. It is fabulous!! My husband, daughter and son could make a meal out just that!
I think it's because I use a food processer for the onions and celery. It flavors the bread so well. The recipe calls for 4 and a half loaves of the large Butternut white bread. I tell ya, it makes enough, we have it in the freezer all year and anytime I make a roast chicken, I pull out a baggie and we have delicious stuffing!

No, but my family makes stuffing-inside the bird. I would consider adding meat if I had to made dressing-cooked outside the bird. It might help the taste.

We call it dressing and I've never heard of sausage in it (I'm in Texas). Ours just cornbread, eggs, onions, celery and broth. My mom puts chicken on the top of ours but it is not baked into it. I love my mom's dressing, but usually not dressing made by others. I guess it's what you grow up with!

Yes, we add breakfast sausage, preferably Johnsonville. We never make stuffing with cornbread…it’s pretty uncommon here in Canada.
