I make mine meatless. My mother would make two bowls of stuffing - one meatless and the other with oysters. My dad and she loved oysters. My brother and I, not so much.

My Italian neighbor introduced us to dressing with sausage - I was never a fan previously, but her version with Italian sausage, parmesan cheese and chard is amazing!
And I use dressing/stuffing interchangeably and have never put any of it in a bird.

My mom makes the dressing/stuffing (we call it both) and uses a little of the gibblets. I need to pay attention this year because I love her dressing the most. She also uses celery, onion, bread and seasoning.

Yes stuffing is the same thing.. we dont stuff it in the turkey though... so i guess thats why we call it dressing... i really don't know... lol At work someone was talking about putting bacon and ham hock pieces in her dressing.. I was curious to what other things people may add to theirs I saute onions and--if I have them--pieces of the turkey heart and gizzard in butter, add cut up apples, and then mix it in with broken up fresh bread and poultry seasoning. People used to fight over the gizzard. Now everyone gets a taste! Also if I am not actually stuffing the bird, i put the turkey neck in with the stuffing when it bakes so it gets that roast turkey flavour.

I never liked stuffing/dressing growing up, but my SIL makes amazing dressing that is my favorite part of the meal. Hers has sausage.

We put pork sausage in ours along with poultry seasoning. It's my DH's grandmother's recipe and is so good. It's a hearty dressing.

We make cornbread dressing with no meat at Thanksgiving. Other times of the year I will make chicken and dressing.

The day before Thanksgiving I make a stock by simmering the turkey neck with seasonings, (salt, pepper, garlic powder) chopped onions, and a pat or two of butter. After about an hour I remove the neck and pull off the meat before discarding the neck bones. I add the meat back into the cooling stock and refrigerate it until the next morning. I use the stock to moisten my stuffing/dressing which includes celery, onion, and water chestnuts, and additional seasonings. So good. This is very close to what we do. We also add celery while making the stock. Then the dressing itself is made with 2 pans cornbread, 1/2 load somewhat dried wheat bread, the meat from the stock preparation, celery, onion and seasonings. Do you know where your recipe originated? Another who loves to read the different traditions. I have never heard of putting fruit or oysters in stuffing/dressing!

I use Jones Breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled. Then the blue Pepperidge Farm stuffing bag
with celery and onion. It's the way my mom made it. It's tradition 😊

I love it with sausage. I grew up with the basic giblet, celery, carrots, onions. It’s ok. My ex-boyfriend’s mom made the BEST stuffing. I think it had sausage and a ton of bacon. It was very dark. She said I’d get the recipe when I married her son. My MIL makes a good one with sausage, celery, olives, and a ton of butter.

I've never heard of it called dressing. Everyone here calls it stuffing. That being said, I always put pork sausage meat in mine. Along with onions, celery, carrot, mushrooms and cubed breadcrumbs. For seasoning I use herb de province, fresh parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage and chicken stock. It's my favorite part of any turkey dinner ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/drool.jpg.gif)

I make two kinds of stuffing/dressing. The first is my mom’s. She is from Pennsylvania so I guess hers is the "Yankee" stuffing. It’s made with white bread and is stuffed in the bird. I also make cornbread dressing. I love them both. No meat in either one.

Growing up my grandma always put the organ meat in the stuffing. Hence, I have never trusted any stuffing I have not watched being prepared. If it has any bits of meat in it I will simply opt out.

I'm Belgian so didn't grow up celebrating Thanksgiving. However after years of being married to an American....stuffing if inside the turkey, dressing if in a pan.😊 I make Stove Top (my husband grew up with it). I also make a from scratch dressing with sausage, roasted pecans and dried cranberries. My dressing is always dressing, ie never inside the turkey and never..never any neck/organ meat. YUK! lol (but no seriously yuk)

I'm the one who makes the stuffing. Toasted Italian bread cubes, fresh sage, sausage, apples, onions, and prunes macerated in Madeira wine. A family favorite from a Gourmet magazine recipe back in the 1980s.

I’m on team Stuffing - even if it’s out of the bird we still call it stuffing. Yes, I know it’s technically ‘wrong’ to call it stuffing if it’s out of the bird but stovetop does it and so do we. Dressing is for salads so calling it dressing would be confusing.
And yes, unless DD’s vegetarian boyfriend is here there is sausage in the stuffing. The reason there’s sausage in the stuffing is, it is great fried the next morning with eggs. My dad made fried stuffing and eggs every Black Friday of my life growing up and it is divine and makes me feel close to my dad.

No meat in our stuffing. I use the same recipe that both my mom & my dad have used for over 40 years from an insert that came in a box of Cutco Knives. Onion & celery braised in a ton of butter. Toasted bread dipped in milk (then squeezed out) and crumbled into the pan with the onion & celery. Salt, pepper, parsley & poultry seasoning...then stuff the bird.

We make my Grandma Della's recipe and we call it stuffing. It has both Jimmy deans sausage and ground beef, along with Celery, onions, bell peppers, fresh made cornbread and a box of Mrs Cubbisons cornbread stuffing. We stuff our bird with it and make a pan of it on the side. Everyone loves it and now my in-laws even make it. My mother-law makes a sweet stuffing out of stove top & after 26 years, it's finally grown on me.
