Looking to buy a new potato masher and am thinking of changing to a ricer. Any preferences?

My husband making them is my preferred method. And it’s the main reason he wanted a Kitchen Aid, but that’s because we make them with 5lbs of potatoes, never just for the 2 of us. Those potatoes have more heft to them, lots of cream cheese. After having dinner at Robuchon’s we fell in love with his potatoes so we bought a potato masher ricer to make them that light and really, really creamy. But he doesn’t use the masher ricer with our family style potatoes.

I chose "other" because my preferred method of making mashed potatoes is to open the packet of dehydrated potatoes and mix them with boiling water. I do own a masher though... it's one that folds down flat to avoid the problem of jamming the drawer. I rarely use it, and almost never on white potatoes. Occasionally with sweet potatoes or butternut squash.

I had the other one shown (all stainless steel) and it rusted after 2 uses. Yes, rusted. I got it to make gnocchi. But I just use a potato masher now to make my gnocchi and mash potatoes.

I use a masher, but I have heard that a ricer makes great potatoes. I do own several other Oxo products and have been really happy with the quality.

I mash them with my Cutco potato masher then add milk, butter, salt & pepper and finish them off with my hand-held mixer.

I started using a ricer probably 15 years ago and I think it's soooo much better than a masher. The texture is flawless.

Whichever method you choose, you just don't want to overwork them. They'll end up gummy.
My favorite potato masher broke a few years back. It was circle shaped with a grid pattern. I loved it but couldn't find another to replace it, so I ended up with a wavy design. It doesn't work as well. I get lumps.
I think it would be worth it to try the ricer.

Yes, get the ricer! I was using a special attachment that came with my stick mixer, but the mixer died so now I am back to doing it by hand with a masher, or if I'm doing a big batch I use my Thermomix. I would definitely go with the ricer - I have one on my wish list. It gives such a great creamy texture with a lot less effort.

I chose other. I don't use anything to mash mine. I dice them fairly small and boil them until they are super tender then add some milk and butter and stir. They are tender enough that I have never had to mash them. They do have some tiny lumps in them, but we don't mind.

Using a ricer creates perfect mashed potatoes. They’re velvety smooth and require almost no liquid, however that doesn’t stop me from adding cream.
The tool I use depends on the occasion and my mood. Holidays or special events: ricer, add warmed cream and butter. Weekday meal, but I’m in the mood for really good potatoes: ricer and cold half and half (or cream if I happen to have it). Weekday meal I want to make quickly and don’t care about the texture, or I want some texture: potato masher and cold milk or half and half.
Never a mixer. Never.

For thanksgiving dinner, or mashed potatoes without the skins, I prefer a ricer. For home style “smashed” potatoes with the skins on, I like a hand masher.

For company I use a potato masher.

Potato masher…I like mine to have some texture and the skin. I don’t think I could get that with a ricer. You can! That’s how I like them too and they come out perfect. Some skin gets through but not all, which is perfect in my book.

I only use real potatoes except for scalloped ... I don't know why I'm OK with them coming from a box! I use a masher but have been known to use the mixer in a pinch ... my family was fine with pasty potatoes!

Lolol Ever since then I have done my own meal and never go to anyone else's house ever and will sign up extra for work to get out of any invitations 😆 Creamed corn instead of frozen, instant mashed potatoes, lemon creme pie instead of lemon meringue, some pumpkin pie with a twist that was no bueno, a dish of cooked cranberries instead of jellied canned, plain old yams not mashed and topped with marshmallows, Hawaiian rolls instead of crescent, green bean casserole made with fresh green beans and actual onions instead of canned beans and french fried onions, the list of insults to my palate was long. The crowning awful touch was that disgusting Midwestern staple "7 layer salad" with like peas and cheese and mayonnaise, etc. I am very highly particular about my Thanksgiving meal, and I am unforgiving. This was at least 28 years ago and I've never gotten over it. 🤣

I have to tell you that the grocery stores are FULL of all different brands of jarred gravy. I like the Trader Joe's kind, or Costco's that comes in their prepared foods section. Life is too short to make gravy from scratch. Especially to go with my instant mashed potatoes. (my potatoes are 100% potatoes with nothing else added...by the way. )

Hand held electric mixer. I’ve done potato masher and ricer. My family can not tell the difference. Why go to all that trouble.
If I’m feeling lazy I use Trader Joe’s frozen real mashed potatoes. They are small little puck shaped frozen discs. Thaw in a pan with milk or heavy cream, heat and done. Quick, easy and they taste good.

Because I hate cleaning more than I love mashed potatoes, and I don't have a dishwasher, I go with that wavy wire thing that is easy to clean. I HATE cleaning that waffle plastic disc thing. I'm not at all picky, so it doesn't really matter.
